LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 28-year-old fledgling boxer has pleaded guilty to one count arson and one count of attempted animal cruelty for setting fire to a pet store where 27 puppies were rescued earlier this year.

Attorney Roger Bailey says Kirk Bills took a plea deal Wednesday to avoid trial on a total of 31 felonies.

Store owner Gloria Lee pleaded guilty last week to arson, attempted animal cruelty and insurance fraud in an agreement that could get her up to 24 years in prison.

The 35-year-old Lee is due for sentencing Feb. 25.

Bailey says Bills could face up to 15 years on the arson conviction, but hopes for less. He’s been in jail since Feb. 7. His sentencing has been scheduled for March 8, 2015.

Prosecutors say Lee and Bills were videotaped setting fire Jan. 27 to the Prince and Princess pet shop.
