On The Eve Of 30 For 30 Release, Brian Bosworth Reflects On His Journey
Houston (CBS Houston) - Former Oklahoma Sooner’s linebacker Brian Bosworth is the subject of a new 30 for 30 ‘Brian And The Boz’.
Ahead of the Tuesday release he joined SportsRadio 610’s The Triple Threat to talk about the experience. Tomorrow’s release of the “Brian And The Boz’ almost never happened.
“It was difficult. I’ll be honest with you it was extremely difficult,” Bosworth said when asked about the making of the documentary. “They approached me many years ago to do a 30 for 30 and to see if I had any interest and at that time in my life I just didn’t want to do it. I didn’t feel like there was anything to add.”
Concerns about how he would be portrayed as well as a desire not to drudge up the past led Bosworth to initially decide against it. But then something changed.
“I’m glad that I let it work on me,” Bosworth said. “I had to work on some personal things and I had to get my life right. I had to get my mind in a place where I could learn to let go of things and confront things that had gone on in my life.”
Bosworth spoke at length about his relationship with his father and his desire to make sure he got things right with his own son, Max.
“I sat down with ESPN and I just discussed with them what my initial vision was and I asked them to honor that,” Bosworth said holding back tears. “They not only honored it, they took it to a whole nother level (sic). They allowed my son to come in and be a part of my pain so that I could show them and everyone how hard it is to be a father, but also how hard it is to be a son and to stand in the shadow of something bigger, something larger than life. I know it’s unusually difficult for Max, but for me to stand in the shadow of my father’s expectations was equally as difficult. And I wanted to impart that to him so that he felt that it was ok for him just to be him.”
He acknowledged the documentary followed the path of his life. It begins with anger, followed by some success, then tribulation, but it comes full circle with Bosworth breaking the cycle of having a rough father-son relationship.
“For ESPN to allow us to do that was remarkable.” Bosworth said.
