PRATTVILLE, Ala. (CBS Atlanta) – More than 200 recruitment fliers to join the Ku Klux Klan have been passed out in a local Alabama town.

Residents in Prattville came out of their homes Sunday morning to find the pamphlets placed in Ziploc bags and weighted down with rocks left in driveways and yards from the Traditionalist American Knights, a KKK group based in Missouri, WSFA reported.

The group’s leader told WSFA that their operation in the state has been growing steadily and they want to continue the expanding efforts in the state.

The message in the pamphlet stated that the KKK is looking for “intelligent, awake, aware, Christian White people to stand up for our race, our heritage and our American way of life.”

The pamphlet noted that the group is “NOT a hate group” and that members of the KKK “honor God, Klan, Family and the U.S. Constitution.” For those interested in finding out more information, the fliers included a website and phone number.

A number of residents in the neighborhood reported receiving the documents to Prattville police.

“This is a very well established older neighborhood and I can’t imagine them even thinking that anyone in this neighborhood would want to join the KKK,” a resident on Wright Street who did not want to be identified told WSFA.

“I don’t want them here. We have a nice quiet neighborhood. We do not need the KKK here,” a different resident who didn’t want to be identified told WFSA.

Within the past six months the Traditionalist American Knights shared that they’ve formed an Autauga County chapter and that their imperial wizard, Frank Ancona, said a new chapter is coming together in North Alabama.

Similar fliers seeking new members were also distributed in Tallahassee in late June.

Ancona told WFSA that it is legal for the KKK to put out fliers as the group exercises their right to free speech and as long as the fliers are properly weighted down, it can’t be considered littering.

He also shared that the decision of local leadership as to where to distribute recruitment information.

The Traditionalist American Knights of the KKK is always recruiting new members and want members all over the country, Ancona told WFSA. He added that applications have been coming in from potential new members in both southern and northern states like New York and Pennsylvania.

“The reason that we’re putting these fliers out is that a lot of Americans are waking up to what’s happening in our country. They’re seeing their freedoms and liberties being destroyed by certain parts of the government,” Ancona explained to WFSA. “Christian Americans feel that they are under attack. “They’re looking to the government for help and the government is ignoring what people are asking for. The government is not representing the people. The government is representing its own interests.”

He stated that the group tries to buy advertising from local media outlets but is turned down so that is why they use fliers to distribute information.
