About Us

MISSION

Water Defense is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to clean water. Our mission is to use technology and public engagement to keep our waterways and drinking water sources free from contamination and industrial degradation.

WHAT WE DO

We believe it is a fundamental human right for people to have access to clean water by knowing what is really in their water.  Water Defense utilizes state of the art Environmental Indicators to measure contamination and the accumulation of contaminants over time, which include but are not limited to oil and related chemicals and organometallic compounds. Our Water testing methods are the first line of Defense in protecting clean water sources. Corporations do not pollute water, people do, and by arming people with the best available technology to fingerprint what is in the water, we will be able to diagnose the true extent of the problem so we can bring people together to fix it by increasing education and awareness.

Water Defense believes that Water is our most precious resource and that it needs to be protected with apolitical and transparent knowledge. We go to disaster sites and known places where there is water contamination to test the water; raise awareness about potential impacts to water quality; and work with scientists to validate and disseminate the data. We have investigated 45 contamination sites and have provided vital information to the public when polluters, or governmental agencies meant to protect us, fall short or utilize technologies that are outdated.

Contaminants are often not a problem upon a single exposure; they become a problem over repeated exposures. If they are in your drinking water, or the water you use for swimming or bathing, you will be exposed countless times. The standard instantaneous water testing method, utilized by government agencies and corporations alike, not only does not measure exposure over time (accumulation) but does not measure for all known oil related chemicals and metals. To understand the difference, simply remember that a fish does not swim in the water for a split second, a bird does not float or dive in the water for a split second, and our children don’t bathe or swim in the water for a split second.

We monitor the effects of the following:

  • Chemical and industrial spills and leaks
  • Over population/ runoff
  • Use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers

Our goal is to foster cumulative water testing and photo documentation of contamination in communities everywhere. We see water contamination as a global issue that will only be resolved when individual regions understand and take responsibility for their impact on water.
