Gas Services Division

Gas Services focuses on the increasing importance of natural gas in Texas

In 1995 the Commission created the Gas Services Division to reflect the increasing importance of natural gas in Texas and the agency's commitment to enhance the efficiency of all sectors of the industry. The division enables the Commission to help Texas capitalize on the state's abundant reserves as markets expand.

The key responsibilities of the Gas Services Division include establishing and ensuring just and reasonable natural gas utility rates that promote safe, efficient, reliable, low-cost investor owned utility service to the citizens of Texas.  The division’s Market Oversight Section participates in contested rate determinations, reviews non-contested filings, collects and publishes the natural gas utility tariffs, facilitates the resolution of consumer complaints and informal industry complaints, enforces the Commission’s requirements for utilities to file their gas curtailment plans, and administers a communication protocol during times of potential natural gas shortages. The division’s Audit Section administers the gas utility tax, both in-house and by field audit, audits natural gas utilities to ensure the proper computation and billing of authorized rates, and determines gas utility status.
