Burlington, Vermont, 1965
In June of 1965, highway officials had their eye on the intersection of Shelburne Road and South Willard Street in southern Burlington – a Y-shaped intersection with another couple side streets feeding into it – as part of that year’s highway plan, as we can see from these two photos from the Vermont Landscape Change program. Almost 50 years later, and it doesn’t look like they made many substantial modifications to the intersection. What do you see here?

Top photo: 64 Ford with trunk open, 64 Impala, 63 Bel air, 63 Oldsmobile, ??import, 1st gen Corvair, 62 Cadillac, 65 Dodge Coronet, IH Scout & C2 Covette by .29 gas sign at either side of those 57/58 Plymouth,
The Scout looks like a Pick-up:

The Cadillac is a ’61.
I thought 1961 Caddy’s had round parking lights like this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/greggjerdingen/6089327739/
and 1962′s had rectangle ones like this?

It’s a `62.
Bottom Photo: 57 Buick, VW Beetle, 62 Impala & 65 Impala Convertible, 63 Ford, a Couple of 57 Chevrolet’s driving towards us on the left side of picture. 60 Ford on the right side.
Corvette Stingray convertible parked at the Sunoco station in the first photo. I wonder why that ’62 Falcon sedan’s trunk is open?
I think the car with the trunk open is a 64 Galaxie,
Is that a 1965 Mercury Breezeway in front of the 1960 Ford, in the bottom photo.
I’m calling that a ’64 Galaxie sedan with a console TV in the trunk.
Naw…bringin’ the mower home from the repair shop I bet.
I believe, it is a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 with the trunk open.
In the bottom photo: Is that a 1965 Mercury Breezeway in front of the 1960 Ford.
Sorry, if this is a repeat. I am experiencing some computer weirdness.
Having never been to Vermont before, I picture myself entering this maze for the first time–yikes! Looks like a recipe for disaster!
Top photo shows a `57 Plymouth way down the block at a gas pump on the right. Second photo shows a still very nice `57 Buick Super hardtop driving away from the camera, towards a `60 Ford. I think the VW Beetle simply wants to get out of the way!
Hi autobug2, I hear ya. Looks like the first roundabout in the US. And I agree on the VW. With that “hunched down” look of the rear end, I’d say they’re goin’ for it. Remember when gas stations used to stack oil cans (or coolant cans) like that? Over night even.
And what to my wondering eyes should appear but a Datsun sedan, front, center and clear. A 221 from 1958-59, maybe…
A Series 211.
..and here I was going to call that a Fiat 1100.
Is that small car in the first photo a Datsun 113″?
What a wacky, compressed perspective on those photos. The Ford with the open trunk looks like it’s been the start of a chain-reaction accident. The Hillman (?) is my pick in the first photo, then the ’62 Cadillac or the Corvette that WordsnCollision spotted. Also, the $0.29 gas ain’t half bad, either, and it would come in handy with so many vehicles there getting 8 mpg..
Top photo- the ’63 Chevy isn’t an Impala. Probably a Biscayne. Bottom photo- ’62 Impala. Impalas back then had six tail lights, lesser models, four.
In the top photo the 64 Impala I listed was in between the 64 Galaxie and 63 Bel Air.
I went with Bel Air because of the bright trim around the tail light panel.

Pretty wild — in 1965 my aunt and uncle still owned the Bel-Aire Motel behind (south of) the Sunoco station. My cousins went to Christ the King High School just to the west of the intersection, on Locust Street (visible in Street View).
Judging by the rear grille, the Corvair in the top photo is a ’64.
i see 2 beetles and an intersection that i would avoid.
