Weekend Challenge: Forever Summer
Hey there, you nostalgic nuggets,
Whether you're back at school or still soaking up the summer sun, this is the time to take a look at all the videos on your phone, the footage that didn't quite make it into your summer vacation video, and the scraps of video tucked away into folders within folders. That's the good stuff! We call these videos Memory Banks, and they are a great way to fondly recall and document your sunny summer.
One of the best parts about this Challenge, other than coming away with your very own wrap up video, is the peek you get into other Vimeo Members' lives! Feeling nostalgia for memories that aren't your own is neat. I feel that way when I watch last year's Memory Bank video by Silent James:
There are any number of ways to edit your Forever Summer video, but here are a few techniques to help get from clip to clip:
Rhythm - Think about the rhythm driving the clips, which can mean a few things. Alex's driving force was the limit of a second, but you could also pick music to carry the beat, like Mark did. As always, make sure you have the rights to the music you use! There's some really great stuff over at the Vimeo Music Store .
Audio Transitions - An easy way to smooth your video using sound is to let the audio from one track play through while changing the visuals. Using J-Cuts or L-cuts helps the video gain some continuity.
Visual Transitions - What works visually when moving from one clip to another? Think about lining the end of one shot up with the beginning of another. Swishblogs are a Vimeo Classic, using camera motion to ease transitions. Our very own Derek makes lots of these.
Themes - Maybe you don't feel like organizing things chronologically? I tried grouping certain types of clips together. Crowd all the shots of crowds into a 10-second whirlwind of concert footage, or put every sunset in a line. Get creative! Start hunting through your footage, and see what you come up with!
The Rules:
+ Create a video summing up your summer. Remember that only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered (although you can definitely use old footage for this one).+ Keep your video under 3 minutes long.
+ If you add music, make sure you use a song you or a buddy created, or something from the Vimeo Music Store ! If you do choose to use a Music Store song, please throw a link in the description.
+ Add this blurb at the end of your video's description: "Created for the Weekend Challenge: vimeo.com/groups/weekendchallenge"
+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by ***Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014*** at 11:59 PM (EST). Just follow the screenshots below:
All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don't worry if your video doesn't show up at first; we'll get to it!
The Prizes:
+ The winner will receive a Challenge badge on their video, and free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you're already a Plus member, you'll get another year tacked on to the end of your current subscription.+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space in their weekly quota!

This could be fun. I don't know if I can drag on enough scraps for 3 minutes though so I guess that's a good thing.

Are we allowed to use music from The Music Bed, or just the Vimeo Music Store?

A bit confused, your written guidelines say the video should be 3 minutes or less, but your video explaining the challenge says the time limit is 1 minute? Exporting my video now and it's 3 minutes…hope that's okay?

Here's my submission, I was surprised to find enough little scraps to put this together. They were like the challenge says "unused scraps laying around" so they aren't the best quality...

It was tough to compile all my summer clips into a video 3mins or less. Unintentionally, i record so much and never thought that ill use any of my footage. Well here it goes. My first weekend challenge, here it is Summer Daze.
