PM Update: Showers out, cool air in; Sandy anniversary

Clouds: Latest mid-Atlantic infrared satellite shows movement of clouds over past two hours. Refresh page to update. See more maps on our Weather Wall.

With plentiful sunshine around D.C. and east into early afternoon, temperatures rose up around 70. Further west, highs were lower in the 60s as rain arrived earlier.  Pretty much everyone is into the 50s now. Tomorrow offers more in the way of cool air, as the first in a series of cold fronts sends chillier readings in our direction.

Through Tonight: With showers already drifting east of the area, it won’t take long to break the clouds up. Sunset could be good across at least parts of the area. We should see stars as the evening goes as well, and head mostly clear by sunrise. Temperatures fall off nicely, mostly landing in the 40s across the area tonight. A range from near 40 in the coldest spots to the upper 40s downtown seems likely. Winds are light from the northwest.

Tomorrow (Thursday): You’ll definitely notice the cooler air, but it was pretty warm here for a bit. Almost too warm, even as someone who likes warmth. Temperatures probably struggle to get out of the 50s under partly sunny skies. Downtown and surrounds may touch 60 though. Winds are from the northwest around 5-10 mph. Not a bad fall day!

Sandy: Whether it was a hurricane or a superstorm or something in between, Sandy will be long remembered for its impact on the northeast. On this two-year anniversary, plenty of folks have been looking back. Here’s some of the interesting items I’ve come across today.
