El Centro College's rooftop wind turbines are spinning again after a brief absence.

The 80 mini turbines were upgraded with new technology so they can withstand the stronger winds that blow through downtown Dallas.

The system produces 20 kilowatts, or about 10 percent of the building's power. Over the course of a year, the system could produce 8,700 kilowatt hours of electricity for the 175,000 square foot building.

The wind turbines take advantage of the artificial wind tunnel created by the skyscrapers in downtown Dallas. The $240,000 system is the first of its kind.

The turbines were installed earlier this year but were taken down in September for the upgrades.
