Duane Allman, known as "Skydog" to those who loved him, was one of the all-time great rock guitarists. In just 10 short years, Allman produced an amazing body of work, both as a studio musician and as part of the Allman Brothers band. Sadly, he was killed in a motorcycle accident at 24, just as the band was breaking through to mainstream audiences. Mahalia Jackson's voice moved mountains. Renowned for the extraordinary power of her singing voice, Jackson sang the gospel, stunning listeners with her bold contralto tones. But her power extended beyond the ability to gain fans. Jackson used her musical gift to advance the civil rights movement, performing in Montgomery during the bus boycotts, as well as at Martin Luther King, Jr.'s March on Washington and again at his funeral. She stated that she hoped her music could "break down some of the hate and fear that divide the white and black people in this country." On the 103rd anniversary of her birth, we remember the power Jackson wielded – over her listeners and over a changing America.
