Biography

State Representative Gene Wu grew up in Texas and has always been passionate about public service. A former prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorney's Office, Gene is currently in private practice.

Gene grew up in Sharpstown, a wonderful working class neighborhood in Southwest Houston. He attended Ed White Elementary, Fondren Middle School, and St. Thomas Episcopal High School. Gene received his Bachelor’s Degree from Texas A&M University, and a Master’s in Public Policy from the LBJ School for Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin.

During his time at the LBJ School, Gene developed a love for helping others, and began considering a career in public service. He was awarded a fellowship at the Texas Workforce Commission to improve community college and technical school standards. After graduating with his Master’s Degree, Gene became the Chief Clerk of the House Higher Education Committee for the Texas Legislature.

Inspired by his own father's graduation from law school at nearly age 50, Gene continued his education at the South Texas College of Law in Houston. He was then able to combine his passion for public service and law degree by joining the Harris County District Attorney's office, where he sought justice for thousands of crime victims.

In his spare time, Gene has devoted countless hours to a variety of community causes. He spent many hours tutoring at-risk youth in the Grad-Lab and Twilight programs at Sharpstown High School, and mentoring adults in the Skills for Living program. For the past six years, Gene has been a volunteer and trainer for Neighborhood Centers Inc. In that capacity, he conducts monthly workshops where he has helped several thousand Harris County residents become United States citizens.

In 2012, Gene not only won his first political race, but also got married. He and his wife, a television journalist, live in Houston, where they continue to be active in the community
