Alaska Natives to Sen. Murkowski: “Time to Start Listening to Us.”
Nunamta Aulukestai launches significant statewide radio ad to urge Sen. Murkowski to protect Bristol Bay, side with Alaskans over the Pebble project
DILLINGHAM, AK – Nunamta Aulukestai, or “Caretakers of the Land,” launched a significant statewide radio ad to highlight Senator Lisa Murkowski’s continued stance against the majority of Alaskans with respect to the Pebble Mine. Sen. Murkowski is a co-sponsor of the Regulatory Fairness Act, which would effectively halt the current Clean Water Act process designed to protect Bristol Bay from the Pebble Mine – a mine opposed by over 60% of Alaskans. The ad will run for a week in Anchorage, as well as Fairbanks, Juneau, Wasilla, Cordova, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Nome, and Bethel.
“Time and again, Senator Murkowski has said she understands our concerns about the Pebble Mine, but she continues to side with foreign mining interests that are working to undermine common sense Clean Water Act protections,” said Kim Williams, executive director of Nunamta Aulukestai. “Alaskans want leadership from our Senior Senator. We hope Senator Murkowski will stand with a majority of Alaskans and support the Clean Water Act process that will protect our economy, our salmon, and our way of life.”
From the ad:
“Pebble Mine would put a three mile wide hole and 9 billion tons of waste...right in the heart of Bristol Bay. Even a small leak could kill the fish. Devastate native tribes and wildlife. And put thousands of Alaska jobs at risk.
“It’s no wonder an overwhelming majority of Alaskans oppose Pebble Mine. But Pebble CEO Tom Collier and U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski aren’t listening.
Collier has hired an army of DC lobbyists and lawyers to push the project forward.
And Senator Murkowski co-sponsored legislation in Washington that will halt the current Clean Water Act Process to protect Bristol Bay from Pebble Mine.”
