Former Texas Rangers outfield Jose Canseco is undergoing surgery Wednesday after almost shooting off a finger Tuesday evening while cleaning a gun at his home in Las Vegas, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Canseco, who played for the Rangers from 1992 to 1994, was cleaning the gun at the kitchen table, his fiancee, Leila Knight, told the Times. He had recently visited a shooting range and there was still a round in the chamber, the newspaper said.

"I head the gun go off and saw his middle finger hanging by a string," Knight told the Times. She said the finger will either have to amputated or have full reconstructive surgery.

He will never have full use of his hand again, Knight said doctors told the couple.

Canseco gained notoriety beyond the baseball diamond, where he was a feared home run hitter.

His revelations about use of steroids in Major League Baseball made him a controversial figure in the sport. He testified before Congress in 2005 about the steroid problem.
