Gender-Neutral Restrooms Open at UNT

Are you male? Female? Both? Neither? Somewhere in between? Use this restroom.

On Friday, UNT officially began making its students' daily bodily activities a little less uncomfortable, with the opening of several gender-neutral restrooms on campus. The move comes as part of the yearlong push by the university to combat campus discrimination. The school has committed $100,000 toward building gender-neutral restrooms. Restrooms already exist in dormitories, but will now expand to public buildings.

"UNT being a state school, this is all an initiative driven by the student body in the last five years," says Oliver Blumer, who is on the board of directors for the Transgender Education Network of Texas.

He says gender-neutral restrooms are typically "one-seaters," and usually quite discreet. "Oftentimes it won't say gender-neutral, but it will have the universal sign of man and woman. Oftentimes it will be portrayed as a family restroom, or a changing room."

The university is the latest in a slew of Texas schools announcing their support -- financial and otherwise -- for the construction of campus-wide gender-neutral restrooms. Southern Methodist University has made strides combatting LGBTQ discrimination in the last two years, which includes the installation of campus-wide gender-neutral restrooms, after being repeatedly ranked on a nationwide list of most homophobic schools.

Blumer says gender-neutral restrooms are a crucial component in improving university treatment toward the LGBTQ community. "The problem is a kid who is transgender, they want to have the privilege of using the restroom they choose for who they are," he says.

"How one needs to use a particular restroom based on their gender identity, it's no one's business. The idea is not someone wanting special treatment. They just want to go to the restroom."

And it's a concept the University of North Texas is willing to spend over $100,000 to embrace. Not only do single-use, gender-neutral restrooms make life easier for transgender students, they also afford privacy to those students who don't wish to use public restrooms.

"The trend is certain taking off, and it's a good thing. This is not just for people that are gender nonconforming. It can be for people that just don't feel comfortable with anybody walking in," says Blumer. "It really is good for everyone, it's not just for transgender people. In fact there are multiple reasons for people wanting to have a private bathroom. But it has the gender neutral sign out front, a family sign, or even a wheelchair accessible sign."

While school districts in Texas have yet to catch up with public universities -- an important issue to keep in mind, says Blumer, as younger transgender individuals are often more susceptible to bullying and social discrimination -- the widespread installation of these in educational settings is a positive first step.

"If you just put 'restroom' on the door, and it's a one-seater, then this is a not an issue," he says. "This is a very positive trend, and it's good to see all kinds of information getting out there."

You are either a male or a female.  Even with surgery, you can't change your gender, your DNA, you natural hormones, or important differences between internal organs.

I find ridiculous in the extreme the thought that someone who is confused or unhappy about their natural gender should use restrooms of the other gender.  Do you want your eight year-old daughter sharing a bathroom with a 50 year-old male who wishes he was a female?

It is equally absurd for schools to cost more money because of having to provide neither/nor restrooms for those who aren't what they wish they were.  If they want to make decisions about their gender as adults, I suppose they have that right.  But, until getting out of high school, they need to use restrooms built for their gender.

Isn't a gender neutral restroom just called a restroom?

Does one have to be gender neutral to use it, or can anyone?

I wonder what Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe would do if he had to use one of these?

I'm glad that "Restrooms already exist in dormitories". What a great line in that story. So informing.

"little less uncomfortable"...really? For who? Sounds like a sexual predator's wet dream for a politically correct hunting ground to me.

Myrna hopes that this means three rooms; Men, Women, Gender-Neutral, which is fine.  I don't want to see one bathroom for all, however.

I wouldn't want to have to be forced to use the same facilities that the women will be using. I once had a job with a popular fast-food franchise that required me to occasionally "police up" the ladies-room, and I've just gotta' say, damn, you girls is nasty!

@noblefurrtexas  I really enjoy the way you carry your self appointed yet undeserved arrogance. As if you have appointed yourself the go to asswipe for ALL social issues.   You are sort of like the ultra poor version of Donald Trump.

Did it ever occur to you that every time you go into a place and they just have ONE restroom that would basically be a Gender-Neutral Restroom.   Any restroom that isn't marked male or female is Gender-Neurtral.

Remember that in case you ever need to pee or take a crap (out of your butt as opposed to your mouth like you do here) do NOT confuse yourself if there is not a placard of a MAN with PENIS on the door.

Or not.  I know that you are one who chooses to PEE or not to PEE just like you decide to be gay or NOT to be gay.  Just hold those feelings in and don't ever pee again.  And please, while you are at it, do the same with your crap.   Just hold it in.  Make that decision TODAY.  I am going to turn gay and give it another shot and never gonna crap again.   You are already full of it so you are half way there.  Tell us your name and we will see you at JR's later Judgment Boy.

Does it hurt to be so ignorant?

Klinefelter syndrome (/ˈklnfɛltər/) or Klinefelter's syndrome, also known as 47,XXY or XXY,is the set of symptoms resulting from a genetic disorderin which there is at least one extra X chromosome to a standard human male karyotype, for a total of 47 chromosomes rather than the 46 found in genetically typical humans. As the resulting individual possesses at least one Y chromosome, they are typically considered genetically male, although the phenotype can be male, female or intersex

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz  Hey Myrna......just checking in and making sure you are keeping all the pussies in line. I don't know how you deal with all this cattiness and whining and pissing.  Don't you get tired of playing in the litter box?    You deserve an award for it.

I am all for any excuse to build an extra restroom in most buildings.   I like multiple options in my urination choices.  Yet I am all for getting in and getting out as opposed to Larry Craig who was more into getting in and getting off.  I don't have time for any toilet wide stancing.

CraigT42

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz what is the problem?  These are not huge multi-stall facilities.  They are single occupancy bathrooms.  Yes they will be used by all sexes and genders, but not at the same time.

@TheCredibleHulk VERY true..I did years of this duty and it's disgusting and unbelievable to most men who have never had the pleasure..some women will actually stand on the toilet and crap all over the place and throw their bloody tampons on the wall..I was astonished at first.

@TheCredibleHulk Yeah, I did my time in fast food.  Women's restrooms are filthy.  I'd rather they shit on the toilet seats in a separate bathroom, thank you very much.  The most amazing trick is how women get shit to stick underneath the toilet seat.  Never saw anything like that scrubbing the men's toilets.

@DonkeyHotay @noblefurrtexas Homosexuality is a choice; not a syndrome.  Science has yet to prove, though the Scientific Method, that there is a natural cause or genetic cause for homosexuality.

Klinefelter's Syndromes describes a chromosomal error in development (likely from development as a zygote, but could be associated with conception).

I don't at all disregard that there may be a physical link from some kind of disorder.   But, back to bathrooms, the notion that someone "feels" uncomfortable with themselves shouldn't require society to accomodate them as though there were some kind of third gender.

But wait until this comes before the Uniform Plumbing Code and the Uniform Building Code as to how many gender neutral single occupancy restrooms will be required in different types of buildings based upon the type of occupancy.

If this spreads to a facility like JJ's DeathStar, how many single occupancy restrooms will be required.

In a dormitory building at UNT, how many gender neutral restrooms are required per floor.

Also there is a difference between a restroom and a bathroom per the UPC and UBC.  Will UNT include gender neutral  bathrooms in its dorms?  If so how many per floor and how many based upon occupancy.  Is only one needed per dorm or does there need to be one per floor?

No joke, these are serious commercial building design questions.

@noblefurrtexas So when you made the choice to be gay and still couldn't get laid, is that when you made the decision to turn straight again? Do you have to make the choice to be straight every day, every hour or is it a minute by minute decision?

I think you should make the decision to give your gayness another try.  Perhaps you were choosing to be a top when you would actually prefer to be on the bottom as that seems to be where you come...from.  (pun intended).   In the time(s) you had decided to be gay were you ever in a long term relationship or were you giving on the spot BJ's to hairy truckers thus the NobleFurrTexas handle.

I am simply suggesting that you make the choice to be gay the right way.  Start by coming out of the closet with your real name and not be ashamed of your opinions no matter how idiotic they might be.   Then put yourself out there in hopes of meeting Mr. Right.  And when you do and you are in that relationship monogamously for 23 years, then get back to me and I will make the choice to be a straight heterosexual dumbass bigot.

Lastly, Gender Dysphoria DSM5 is a psychological issue and happens more in the heterosexual community than gay.  I have never understood how it became part of the gay rights movement other than as a group we tend to be more accepting.   It is a confusing condition and one that took me a long time to understand yet once I did, I had nothing but respect for the mental anguish these people experience and their long road to acceptance.  I admire their bravery in the face of such adversity.  Sadly it is much easier to laugh at it, make fun of what you don't understand which only increases their adversity.

Let me know when you decide to be gay and I will be happy to show you the ropes.  I made my decision years ago.   Instead of switching back to chicks, I chose to stick with the gay thing so I could make people like you feel better about your life.   You really are a full tank of misinformation.

So why require doors on toilet stalls, other than to accommodate people who feel uncomfortable defecating in view of others?

No they aren't. The solutions are simple. No one is ripping out or discontinuing more traditional bathrooms, just supplementing them with smaller gender neutral bathrooms. I'm many cases they are simply adding one simple purpose to pre-existing family style restrooms.

It astounds me how many people get so upset by the fact that someone else may pee someplace they don't like.

@CraigT42  Craig, you make far too much sense to be here and thus the Moderator/Editor may have you censored.

Yes, you are absolutely right, Nothing will change, in fact it will make it better for everyone.   And it would be just as easy to read and understand transsexuals than to get their bowels in an uproar.

The rule of thumb here at UP is to hate what you don't understand, fear what you don't know, and if it stirs up some weird feelings deep inside, just beat the shit out of it and delete and censor all opposing thoughts.

@CraigT42

The question remains, how many are required based upon the building occupancy.  Otherwise, this is just a feelgood action.

You cannot necessarily reduce the number of traditional male and female restroom facilities as there are very specific requirements for the number of gender specific restrooms based upon building occupancy.

One change that was made a number of years ago in the UBC was to require a greater number of female restroom facilities in public arenas.

Following your logic, would only one single stall restroom labelled as gender neutral be needed in JJ's DeathStar?

If this is the case, then we are talking about a feel good action.

Besides, I believe that you have missed the point about the difference between a restroom and a bathroom.  Will UNT also build gender neutral bathing facilities?
