How do I make mobile versions of my videos?

Plus and PRO members can make mobile versions of their videos two ways.
  1. Go to My Settings and select the "Videos" tab. From there check the box next to "Make my videos compatible with mobile devices" and click the Save as default button. Check "Also, apply to existing videos" to do just that.
  2. If you own an iPhone, iPod Touch, or Android device, you can go to our mobile site (vimeo.com/m) and make mobile versions of your videos. After logging in, select My Videos then Generate Mobile Videos.
Once you choose to make mobile versions of your videos every new video you upload will get a mobile version and all of your existing videos will be queued up to be converted. Depending on the size of your collection, this could take some time to generate.

Why do some videos play on mobile devices without generating mobile versions?

Mobile devices are getting smarter by the day, and oftentimes these devices are powerful enough to play back full desktop video without dedicated mobile versions. However, to ensure that your videos can be played back across as many devices as possible, old and new, it's still important to generate mobile versions.

Do I have to do anything special to make my videos mobile-compatible?

The only requirement is to generate mobile versions of your videos. The iframe embed code will automatically serve the correct version of your videos depending on what device someone is using to view them. Anyone going to your video on vimeo.com with a mobile device should be redirected to the shiny mobile site. We'll do all the hard work so you can focus on making your videos!

Why won't my embedded video play back on mobile devices?

Make sure you're using the iframe embed code, and that you don't modify any of the attributes in the embed code unless you know what you're doing! The old object-based Flash embed code is not compatible on mobile.

Why does the embedded video player look or act differently on mobile devices versus on a computer?

Most phones only have a few inches of screen real estate, while a computer monitor is many times larger. Our player will adjust elements like the playbar and like/share buttons to accommodate for smaller screens. Some outro options may not appear or display properly, depending on how you customize your embed settings.

Why can't I loop or autoplay my videos on mobile devices?

These functions are restricted on most mobile platforms and are out of our control. Sorry!

My 1080p video isn't playing back in HD on some devices! Why?

When an HD video is uploaded, we generate a 720p version automatically. The uploader can then later enable 1080p versions in the video file settings. If 1080p versions are enabled, the 1080p video file overwrites the 720p video file. Some devices cannot play back 1080p video, so we'll serve up the SD version instead to those devices. If compatibility is a concern, we highly recommend sticking with 720p (it still looks pretty darn good!)
