The Mean Green volleyball team was able to get back above .500 in conference play with a three set sweep of Florida International University (25-17, 25-17, and 27-25) Sunday at home.

The win has brought the Mean Green (15-9, 6-5 C-USA) back into contention in the Conference USA tournament hunt and extends its win streak to three games.

“We had been going through some tough times during the past couple weeks,” head coach Andrew Palileo said. “I really think the girls have gotten through it and are stronger because of it. The two wins against two good conference teams is a good confidence boost for us.”

North Texas started the match strong and won the first two sets. Junior outside hitter Carnae Dillard had a .714 attacking percentage in the first set and senior defender Eboni Godfrey had a total of 12 digs in the first two sets combined.

“This past few games have really helped us get back into rhythm,” Dillard said. “Our chemistry and our defense is finally falling into place so we are really excited to see how we do on the road against some really good teams coming up.”

In the third set, FIU tried to battle back against the Mean Green by taking its first lead of the game at 17-16. After that score, neither team led by more than one point all the way until the 25-25 tie.  North Texas was able to score two straight points in extra time to secure the victory.

“These two wins show us what we really can be,” sophomore setter Amy Henard said. “We hit a rough spot in the middle of our schedule and these wins have reconfirmed what we knew we could do. We are starting to get our ‘mojo’ back.”

Henard also finished with 39 total assists which moves her up to fifth all time in school history with 1,974 assists.

“It is always to have a setter like her on the team,” Palileo said. “She is the quarterback and the leader of your team. She helps make everyone around her better by directing and managing those around her, it really is great.”

The Mean Green now hit the road for its final three away games of the season starting with a match against Middle Tennessee State University Friday at 7 p.m.
