Mobile websites have to stand by and watch apps get all the love: the big launches, the reviews, the attention, the memes (no one ever says “there’s a mobile site for that”). But mobile websites don’t care about all that — they’re too busy being the biggest thing you never think about.

Case in point: Vimeo received millions upon millions of visits last month (totally bragging), and about a third of those people (still many millions!) experienced Vimeo on a mobile device. That’s a lot of millions, and we’ve got a special announcement for them, and for everyone else: the Vimeo mobile site just got a major overhaul. It’s probably best to show you.

Here's the old one:

And here’s the new one:

Every update has been made to bring more of the Vimeo you love to your phone in a way that’s beautiful, fast, and functional. Note the large video thumbnails and delightfully tappable buttons and icons. Also included: search for people in addition to videos, scroll infinitely instead of tapping “Load more videos,” and watch on a new video page, which, yeah, we’re better off showing you:

Now you can follow creators from the mobile site and navigate seamlessly through the description, comments, and related videos using our handy-dandy tab system. Want to leave a comment? Then you’re in luck:

The cleanest and prettiest tabula rasa we ever did see. And if you’re replying to someone else’s comment, you can read it right on the comment screen. Sticking with the theme of clean and pretty, here’s the new menu:

We fit in more desktop web features than before, while keeping everything legible and accessible. And we even tucked the footer and language settings in here so you could enjoy uninterrupted scrolling through your feed.

Here’s another little detail that makes us feel like proud website parents. Look at this:

And now this:

And then this:

See that top left button? It changes depending on what you’re doing — a magnifying glass to pull up search when you’re at the top of a page, an arrow to zip you back to the top if you’ve been scrolling, and an X to cancel when you have second thoughts about that “First!” comment. It’s a dynamic, contextual button, and it’s so new that we don’t have a remotely catchy name to call it. Dynabutton?

In other new stuff news: the mobile site has mobile-specific profiles, which give you easy, tab-enabled access to your videos, likes, and follows.

And finally: you can now upload videos from the mobile site, and edit the details and privacy settings too.

Now you’re probably ready to peel away from this blog, pull out your phone, and count on the Vimeo mobile site to save you from the indignity of inconveniences like waiting in line or being outdoors. Go for it. Millions of people can’t be wrong (bragging again).

Yes please!!! I like to view Vimeo videos on my Androd app but it has some major bugs and there are several things you can't do right.

What an upgrade!!! It looks like the website instead of a standard mobile app. Good for Vimeo. Rise up!!!

Thanks! This will have to do in the mean time while you hopefully update the Android app (by the way, it's embarrassing on both phone and tablet). Thanks again!

+1 For the Android app. The video quality on an Android Tablet is a disaster.

Me gusta, pero...
Give some love to the iPad UI. Looking at the iPhone's IOS app, the bigger brothers user interface is not as intuative, or brilliant as the smaller iPhone's.

Merci!

Can't watch any video from my android browser, luckily the app works, but if I scroll a long list of videos with the app, at some point it always stops responding, like RAM ran out or something.

Major fail!!

How about trying to make something that actually work when you redesign. With this redesign, vimeo is still about 100% useless on mobile.

Why?
1. when I visit vimeo.com in my mobile browser (IE10), the server gives me the desktop version of the site, not the mobile version, and there is no link in sight to switch to mobile version
2. The site claims that "I have an old browser and need to upgrade", while my phone (Lumia 920) is brand new and fully up to date.
3. Videos still doesn't play. It tries to suggest that I switch browsers (there are no other browsers available), or install Adobe Flash (Yea right, which mobile OS'es support that these days?)

YouTube made this work long ago (It worked from the day I got the phone), why can't Vimeo?

(And yea, you do have an app, but that is even worse, since it is hopeless to find anything in it, and you cannot paste links from email, and you cannot play referer-locked videos).

Come on Vimeo, can't you do something right?

That's what you get for choosing a Windows Phone :P
I'm a web developer myself and can confirm the company I work for doesn't optimise or test for Windows Phone. The market share is just too small...

Their site sucks on android tablet and phone too

They simply are not capable to write working code

Terrible. You didn't make a mobile site, you pretty clearly made an iOS site. Doesn't work right on Windows Phone, doesn't work right on Android and doesn't work right on BlackBerry 10.

Little nit, but why flip the conventional UX of navigation upper left and secondary action upper right? Feels a bit awkward.

Around 80-90% of users have mobile phones better, than an Apple iPhone... You send us, your users a newsletter, announcing a new mobile app - for which I was actually waiting for months - and then it appears that you are talking about an iPhone app only. What a fail! Vimeo still doesn't appear properly on my android 4.1, so I'm back to Youtube, maybe half year later I will give it a try once again, when you finally come up with an app, that suits the majority of users...

I add my voice to those expressing disappointment that Vimeo doesn't work on WindowsPhone 8 web browser. Hopefully, Vimeo can fix/upgrade their site soon.

At least the Vimeo app for WP8 works reasonably well.

Wish you guys would go back to the old mobile WAP version. This new version doesn't play videos on Android or iPhone - i've tested it - and the majority of people I know don't have the Vimeo app installed. YouTube maybe, but not Vimeo.

Was using Vimeo for all of my mobile traffic but have since had to switch back to YouTube because the new mobile version sucks.

Demétrio Ruivo

Demétrio Ruivo Plus

Was trying to use the Android app, but it seems everyday more like Vimeo is a Mac only platform. The android version locks up while scrolling videos EVERYTIME. I have gotten myself a Vimeo Plus account and it was my worst mistake so far, works on web more or less (upload speed is still a poor joke compared to youtube) and the Mobile version is a laughable at best. Nice interface is secondary, make it work 1st. My renewal is already cancelled for the Plus membership btw... ;)
