Book Description

Dirk Nowitzki got his start as a shy 20-year-old from Wurzburg, Germany with a dry wit and stunning ball handling skills. By being himself and becoming a champion, he rose from 10-time All-Star and 2007 league MVP to being arguably the best European-born player in NBA history and a transcendent athlete. This collection of stories from The Dallas Morning News helps you get to know him and enjoy the game even more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected March 8, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition
Maybe I was expecting too much. I've been a Mavs fan most of my life (seriously. I remember when you could get Mavs tickets at Minyard's for under ten bucks and they regularly blacked out Mavs games because they didn't have enough people to fill the seats around the court). So I'm definitely a huge Dirk fan. This book started out great, talking about Dirk's hesitant decision to go pro and his last few days in Germany and how he got on the play and... then it skips forwards about eight years to the '06 finals. No transition. Nothing. Then it skips again to '07 after the Mavs were eliminated in the first round but Dirk was named the regular season MVP. Then it skips again to the 2011 playoffs, mentioning game 4 and 6. I guess I expected a little bit more backstory (although perhaps I shouldn't have given how private Dirk seems to be and given the price of the book). But the book was basically a few articles compiled (albeit, well written articles) with a few factoids that the casual fan can find doing a google search (in fact, I can only think of two things in the entire book that I read that I didn't already know). Maybe a good book for a bandwagon fan intro, but if you expect to learn anymore about Dirk, skip the book and do an advanced google search.
