Charges are pending against a Denton man who allegedly assaulted his wife Thursday, Denton police said.

Officer Orlando Hinojosa, police spokesman, said the 21-year-old man is suspected of holding his 22-year-old wife hostage at their apartment in the 400 block of South Carroll Boulevard for 15 to 20 minutes Thursday.

The man took his wife’s car keys and cellphone and put them in his pocket, according to a police report.

When she tried to get them back, her husband got upset and allegedly slammed her to the ground, the report stated.

After the husband left the apartment, the woman asked a neighbor to call 911, Hinojosa said. He said the husband came back with an uncle to drop off the keys and cellphone, but he was not there when officers arrived.

The wife, he said, refused medical attention.

Charges of assault family violence and unlawful restraint are pending, police said.

Hinojosa said the man was not on the lease and had been living there a few weeks. The friend told police that the man was “not acting normal today,” Hinojosa said.

He said the 24-year-old was taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton for a mental evaluation.
