The University of Hawaii' said Tuesday that men's basketball coach Gib Arnold and assistant coach Brandyn Akana have been removed from their coaching duties and will be departing employment with the school.
Arnold wlll be employed through Jan. 26, and will be a paid a lump sum payment for the remainder of his contract term, which expires on June 30, 2015.
Akana will also be employed through Jan. 26, in accordance with his contract, and he will not be entitled to any additional compensation, the university said..
The basketball team had been subject to an NCAA investigation. In August, Outrigger Enterprises Group, which sponsors the season opener Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic on Nov. 14, said it supported the team, and the hospitality company said it still committed to the university's athletic program.
"Outrigger Resorts' support for UH Athletics is unwavering," said Outrigger spokeswoman Nancy Daniels. "As a Hawaii-based company, we are proud to share a partnership with UH for more than two decades and remain committed to the success of its student athletes. This year, as a Diamond Corporate Partner, Outrigger Resorts serves as the title sponsor of six UH tournaments, as well as Warrior Football. Our sponsorship also includes the upcoming Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic, and we look forward to celebrating its 50th anniversary of play on Nov. 14, 15 and 16. "
