Seismologist Testifies on New Drilling Policies
Cross post from Star Telegram; August 26, 2014
Original rules for injection wells were designed to protect water contamination not protect seismic activity. Proposed rules would require drilling permits to contain information on daily injection volumes and pressures. Public comment period for this discussion is open until Sept 29th. Read article here

Pappy Elkins Lake-- WATER WORRIES:
Posted by Admin August 22, 2014
Constant complaints have been coming from concerned residents regarding the growing shoreline of Pappy Elkins lake and why was the water rapidly disappearing. After multiple complaints filed with TCEQ, the state has agreed and cited XTO for taking out too much water--exactly 1,387,000 gallons more than approved. Water is used in the Hyraulic fracturing (fracking)process of a gas well after it has been drilled. Typically, each well would require 2-4 million gallons per well to frack. The used water is not often recycled, it is taken to injection wells to be disposed of-- and gone forever. That amount of water loss ,alone, is taxing on an already burdened environment saddled with drought conditions and ongoing heat. There is much debate over the environmental consequences versus the benefits of hydraulic fracturing related to gas well operation and production. The more critical question here is, who was responsible for monitoring the water use. TCEQ says public lake-- was responsibility of the city to be monitoring. However, with the complaints given to TCEQ stemming as far back as 2011, there should be some reasonable accountability there. This is typical of the vague regulatory oversight that the gas and oil production industry has. See video here

Arlington Considers Funding for Fire Department Updates
Star Telegram.com/local. Sunday July 13, 2014: Fire Training Center is Due for an Update: City of Arlington will consider either a 3.5 million or 5.5 million bond issue to update their fire training center. The proposal was made in order to be more proactive and handle "realistic public- safety threats " within the City of Arlington. Especially as it pertains to the natural gas industry. With a whopping 305 gaswells located within the City of Arlington, Fire Chief Jim Self commented that " natural gas is one of those industries we are trying to evolve with." Education and updated technology will include state of the art training related to hazardous spills, gas well leaks, fires and other related emergencies during drilling or fracking. This certification will enable Arlington to offer specialized training(at a cost) to other fire departments. |
