Michael Thomas | Special Needs Insider

Michael Thomas is a native Texan and a graduate of both Booker T. Washington High School and Southern Methodist University where he earned degrees in Philosophy and Religious Studies. In 2006, after graduating from SMU, Michael began his non-profit career with the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Corpus Christi, Texas as a program coordinator and was directly involved with over $1.5 Million in fundraising in his time with the organization. He later relocated within the MDA to Las Vegas where he continued working in special events and fundraising.

Michael then moved on to work with a non-profit organization named Opportunity Village, an organization dedicated to vocational training for adults with disabilities in the Southern Nevada area that has been recognized as a national leader in special needs services. He spent two years working as both the special events manager and program development manager for the organization, helping both raise funds as well as develop new programming opportunities such as their “OVation” Performing and Visual Arts program.

In April of 2010, Michael joined My Possibilities as the organization’s executive director. In the past four years, the organization has grown from serving 30 families each week to over 250, and is considered a leader and benchmark for continued education for adults with cognitive disabilities. He and the organization continue to aspire to push the envelope in what is expected in education after the public “school bus stops coming.”

Michael lives in Plano, Texas with his wife Julie and his twin boys Jackson and Maxwell. They share their home with their three lovable pit bulls, Lily, Otis, and Jonah.
