Video: Two quick third-period goals propel Flyers over rival Penguins

Oct 22, 2014, 11:08 PM EDT

Just like that, from a tied game to a two-goal Philadelphia Flyers lead.

First, it was R.J. Umberger, involved in a fight with Simon Despres earlier in the game, scoring to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead. It was also his first of the season. Timely.

It came less than a minute after the Penguins thought they had perhaps taken the lead on an Evgeni Malkin goal, but that was waved off after officials went to video review and confirmed the call on the ice that the puck never crossed the goal line, according to the league’s Situation Room Blog.

Matt Read added the two-goal cushion for Philadelphia – and what a beauty it was – just two minutes after the Umberger goal.

Again, for Read, his first of the season. What better way to get of the schneid? The goals came before the midway point of the third period, helping give the visiting Flyers a 5-3 win over their bitter rivals from Pittsburgh.

For the Flyers, it was a strong response after getting thoroughly dominated the night before by the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Flyers did lose Zac Rinaldo to an upper-body injury. His last shift came at the end of the first period. Earlier in the opening period, 29-year-old Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, originally from France, scored his first NHL goal to give Philadelphia a lead after 20 minutes.

What an amazing hockey game. I’d be lying if I said I don’t like atleast some Flyers-Pens shenanigans but this was just pure back and forth hockey. I sincerely wish we could play the Pens in Pittsburgh every game. The Flyers always show up.

Emery was great but before he’s annointed the starter we need to give Mason some actual help. It’s essentially been 5-on-Mason all season. They need a complete team effort to help their starter. Couturier was awesome. Bellemare was a huge pickup. And Del Zotto finally looked like a former 1st rounder. Great game for this team.

Yeah i dont know why but you guys get much more focused for these games. Part if.the problem is looking at your record its hard to take a team serious even if you know that doesnt matter.

Worst game ive seen pens play this year. They looked like they were skating in quicksand from minute 5 to 55

I really don’t understand why the Flyers own the Pens in Pittsburgh. I agree with Mike Milbury, it makes no sense at all. Penguins are a better team on paper but the Flyers always seem to show up in Pittsburgh.

      Yeah I can’t explain it either…
I didn’t even think they were going to win tonight so this is a pleasant surprise I got after work!
Coots is the man… Where is jpelle calling coots a one hit wonder?

Couturier was a machine tonight. He looks much faster this season and he’s way better in the dot. Kid’s on his way to a Selke trophy in the next few years.

And like Keith Jones said, it wasn’t even by frustrating the Pens and forcing them to play to the Flyers “level”… the Pens just got outplayed the final two periods. Idk what it is about that arena but I love it.

On another note, both teams wearing original (Flyers usual jersey) or vintage jerseys was cool. Those Pens sweaters are so so much better than the gold ones.

Probably for the same reason I don’t understand why The Flyers can’t play 60 minutes of consistent hockey against everyone they play.

Pens looked good for the first 10 minutes of the game but after that it went south. The Pens looked like the team that played last night. 3-4 days off just isn’t good at all for this team. They looked very sloppy and out of sync at times during the game. Have to hope they have a better showing tomorrow at the Joe.

Also now I know what it was like from 74-89 at the Spectrum, wouldn’t know since born in 93, this is just frustrating at how we always lose at home to Philly in Consol.

Was that y ou that said they always play like crap coming off long breaks?

They looked slow and passes were not crisp

        Nope. Might have been Chance.
