Veteran d-man Rome signs with Ducks’ AHL affiliate

Oct 22, 2014, 12:05 PM EDT

After failing to latch on in Detroit on a professional tryout, Aaron Rome is trying his hand at the AHL level.

On Wednesday, the Norfolk Admirals — AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks — announced they’ve signed Rome to a PTO. The 31-year-old joins the organization he originally broke into the NHL with; Rome made his big-league debut in Anaheim during the 2006-07 season, then went on to appear in over 200 more contests with the Blue Jackets, Canucks and Stars.

A physical, stay-at-home defenseman, Rome’s best years came with Vancouver from 2010-12, though he’ll be forever tied to this infamous hit on Nathan Horton during the ’11 Stanley Cup Final:

That hit netted Rome a four-game suspension — the longest in Cup Final history — though he did return the following year to score a career-high four goals and 10 points in 43 games for the Canucks.

Following his time in Vancouver, Rome inked a three-year, $4.5 million deal with Dallas but was bought out this past summer, then landed in Detroit during training camp and part of the exhibition campaign.

    All penalties lead to Rome.

amazing to look back on that play as the critical turning point in the series. the bruins had played hard the first two games but had some tough luck with both outcomes. and knowing that they lost horton for the rest of the series, i thought there was an outside chance they might get swept after that first period of game 3 simply based on the way things were going. absolutely amazing what happened next
