Howl-O-Ween at La Centerra

Pups will strut their stuff at the Howl-O-Ween Dog Walk, Costume Contest & Expo at La Centerra at Cinco Ranch. The event includes a one-mile noncompetitive walk and a costume contest with prizes. The first 200 participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt, and refreshments will be available for dogs and owners. Proceeds benefit Citizens for Animal Protection.

Mini Monster Bash in Galveston

Galveston's Saengerfest Park will be the site of an admission-free festival for kids that includes a costume contest for ages 11 and younger, Halloween photos and trick-or-treating.

ArBOOretum

Trick or treat as you learn about Texas wildlife at the Houston Arboretum. The family-focused day will include visits by owls and other animals, a hay maze, petting zoo, puppet shows and pumpkin carving.

Food Truck Fright Night

Have a scare and then comfort yourself with food-truck fare. With help from Phobia, one of Houston's longest-running haunted houses, Xavier Educational Academy will be transformed into "Phobia Inside the Loop" for one night only. St. John's Fire, Bare Bowls and Menchie's food trucks will be parked outside with monster munchies. Proceeds with benefit the Friends of Xavier Scholarship Fund and the Houston Food Bank. Discount (with Food Bank donation) and VIP tickets available.

Trick or Treat Trail

Halloween comes early in The Woodlands. The fifth annual Trick or Treat Trail at Town Green Park will feature games, a costume contest and the chance for kids to fill their goodie bags. The afternoon of free fun will include strolling entertainers, a marketplace and music.

Monsters' Museum of Houston

The Children's Museum of Houston has morphed into the Monsters' Museum. Youngsters can go trick-or-treating every day from 4 to 6 p.m. (with extended hours on Thursday and the weekends) through Oct. 31.

Other festivities include disguising pumpkins as monsters, designing a Frankenstein mansion, making a zombie disguise, learning mad-scientist skills, mastering monster shrieks and making "Drippy Monsters" appear and disappear.

Note: Not all activities will be available daily. Check the museum's website for details. The children's museum's Halloween festivities culminate with Moe's Monster Mash Bash on Oct. 31.

Zoo Boo

The Houston Zoo puts a wild spin on Halloween with its Zoo Boo, which ends this weekend. The festivities include a pumpkin patch, a Candy Cave, trick-or-treating, a monster mural, a Tatzoo Parlor and special holiday-related Meet the Keep talks. Costumes are encouraged.

Ghost Walk Tours

Discover Houston Tours leads 90-minute strolls around some of downtown's spookiest sights. Guides Phil Stewart and Dot Honeycutt share stories of the macabre, including a yarn about the city's first hanging. Tours are limited to 30 people, so reservations are advised. Tours start at the Spaghetti Warehouse.

Boo on the Boardwalk

Trick-or-treating, Halloween movies on the plaza, a little kids' haunted house and live music are part of the holiday festivities at Kemah Boardwalk.
