The Edmonton Oilers got that first win out of the way earlier in the week, following some tumultuous times to begin the regular season. They’ve now recorded win No. 2.
Two days after defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Oilers sent the visiting Washington Capitals away with a loss, by a final score of 3-2 on Wednesday.
It was all Edmonton hanging on to that lead as the evening progressed. Washington dominated in shot attempts, as you can tell from the screengrab from hockeystats.ca. Just couldn’t get that tying goal in the third period.
Didn’t help that the Capitals biggest offensive threat, Alex Ovechkin, didn’t have a shot on goal through two periods, though he remedied that statistics in the final 20 minutes with two.
In fact, he whiffed on an attempt in the second period, resulting in a turnover and a goal from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins just seconds later to tie the game at 2-2.
Nikita Nikitin scored his first goal of the season and first with the Oilers to give Edmonton the lead late in the second period.
Despite a furious surge from the Capitals in the third period, the Oilers wouldn’t relinquish their lead, thanks in large to the play of goalie Ben Scrivens, who 32 saves.
The Oilers, well they’re suddenly looking at a decent chance for a third consecutive victory, facing the Carolina Hurricanes, the only NHL team yet to win a game this new season, on Friday.
