Aereo to Close Boston Office, Layoff Staff

aereo antennaeAereo, the streaming TV service that suffered a massive setback with a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year, will close its office in Boston and lay off 43 employees. A company spokesperson confirmed the move in an email statement to BostInno:

Spokeswoman Virginia Lam said the company will continue on in some form: “In an effort to reduce costs, we made the difficult decision to lay off some of our staff in Boston and New York. We are continuing to conserve resources while we chart our path forward. We are grateful to our employees for their loyalty, hard work and dedication. This was a difficult, but necessary step in order to preserve the company.”

TV Milestones: ‘MTP,’ Bloomberg, CNN

  • “Meet the Press” is celebrating its 67th birthday today. The longest-running program on TV debuted on Nov. 6, 1947 hosted by Martha Rountree. There have been 11 moderators in that time (12 if you count Tom Brokaw who filled in after the death of Tim Russert in 2008).

  • Bloomberg Media was honored last night as the “Most Innovative Publisher of the Year” by Digiday. The award recognizes overall excellence and breakthrough achievement. “The media group has accelerated its efforts to build out a multiplatform media empire,” Digiday says.

  • CNN celebrated three wins at the 2014 International Broadcasting awards last night in London. CNN won best “Live Television Journalism” for coverage of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17; best “Short News Report” and Richard Quest was named “TV Personality of the Year.”

Low-Key, Glitch-Free Launch of CBSN

CBSN2

It didn’t look like launch day at CBSN, and that’s a big achievement. Freed from the burden of launch day hoopla and high expectations, CBS News turned on its brand new live streaming news channel Thursday, and did so without a hitch. The motto is “Always On,” and for the bosses on West 57th Street, getting it on and keeping it on without a meltdown–not so much as a hiccup in the hours we watched–is a win for CBS News and the digital gurus at CBS Interactive.

Will it work? Who knows. But the potential is there, if CBS is willing to give CBSN time to evolve, experiment, and find its own pace and style. On day one, there’s little flash, no rush, and plenty of potential. Read more

CNBC, FBN Could Benefit From New Nielsen Ratings Measurement

NielsenFor years networks like CNBC have discounted Nielsen ratings reports because the data did not include out-of-home viewing. CNBC argues that much of its viewing is done on trading floors, in offices and even at airports, bars and restaurants during the day.

Well that could all change.

Today, Nielsen unveiled the results of a new TV measurement test of out-of-home viewing. Portable People Meters used over a three-month period in Chicago showed that out-of-home viewing added a 7% to 9% ratings lift for audiences in the key news demo of Adults 25 to 54.

“Whether on the trading floor or at a desk, the core audience of a business network is the out of home viewer,” Paul Rittenberg, EVP of Ad Sales and Research for FNC and FBN tells TVNewser. “We’re pleased to finally see Nielsen make moves to measure that important demographic.”

The test was conducted for the full 5am-5am day, but daytime saw the largest increases of any daypart. Primetime ratings were also larger. Sports programming saw the biggest increase, but news, which includes business news channels, also saw a lift.

Sunday Show Ratings: Nov. 2

sunday shows_304CBS’s “Face the Nation” was first among Sunday shows in viewers last week and was up +2% in total viewers and +29% in the A25-54 demo compared to the same week last year.

NBC’s “Meet the Press” came in second in the demo but was down: -4% in viewers and up +21% in the demo vs. the same Sunday last year.

ABC’s “This Week” was slightly down -8% in total viewers -10% in the demo. It should be noted that “This Week” was rescheduled in New York due to the NYC Marathon and Atlanta due to the Senate Debate.

Cable rebroadcasts of “Fox News Sunday” on Fox News Channel averaged a combined 1.45 million total viewers and 196,000 A25-54 viewers. “Fox News Sunday” on broadcast was up +22% in the demo compared to last year. The Fox Sunday show had 2.7 million total viewers between broadcast and cable.

“Face the Nation” is based on the first half-hour only, as the full contiguous hour aired in just 55% of the country.

Al Roker Will Attempt World Record Forecast

“Today” show and Weather Channel host Al Roker will attempt a Guinness World Record next week for the longest uninterrupted weather report: 34 hours!

Rokerthon kicks off Wednesday at 10pmET on Today.com, continues all day Thursday and ends — Roker hopes — at 8am Friday on the “Today” show. And boy, will he be ripe. At least he won’t have to worry about shaving. Roker’s weather reports will air across NBC platforms, including “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams,” on NBC affiliates and the Weather Channel.

It’s all part of Roker’s Shine a Light campaign for the USO and challenges the current record of 24 hours.

While this may be his longest forecast, did you hear the one about Roker’s first regular weather gig? It came at Syracuse station WHEN (now WTVH) when the regular weatherman inadvertently used a word that rhymes with “front” on live TV. Let’s just hope something similar doesn’t slip during Rokerthon.

Morning Show Ratings: Week of October 27

morningshowanchors2014“Good Morning America” wins the week, but was the only morning show to lose audience compared to the same week last year. “GMA” was down -2% in viewers and down -3% in the demo. On Friday, “GMA” beat the “Today” show for the second straight Halloween — which “Today” formerly dominated — in both viewers and the demo.

“Today” had its biggest week in both total viewers and the demo in more than five months, since the week of May 19, 2014, but was down -8% in the demo vs. last year. “Today” did increase its total viewer audience by less than 1%.

“CBS This Morning” showed the most viewer growth in the mornings (+2%) but was down -4% in the demo.

The averages for the week of Oct. 27, 2014:

  • Total Viewers: ABC: 5.434M / NBC: 4.793M / CBS: 3.019M

Bill O’Reilly Shoots Down Idea of John Kasich Hosting ‘The Factor’

On Tuesday night, congressman-turned-Fox News host-turned Governor John Kasich joked following his re-election in Ohio that wanted to return to FNC. Speaking with Bret Baier and Megyn Kelly, Kasich said, “What I’m really bucking for in the short term is to come back and host O’Reilly again at least once or twice. It would be fun.”

Well, Bill O’Reilly shot down that idea on Wednesday night. It’s safe to say that politicians won’t be hosting “The Factor” anytime soon. Check out the video.
