Tell Duke Energy to Move Beyond Coal in Asheville

Since merging with Progress Energy last year, Duke Energy has become the largest energy utility in the country. It has the power to rapidly invest in clean energy solutions, but instead it continues business-as-usual by relying on an outdated, dirty coal plant in Asheville that is polluting our air and water.

Historic hot temperatures, droughts, superstorms and raging wild fires in 2012 leave no doubt that climate disruption is here. The coal plant in Asheville is the largest single contributor to climate disruption in Western North Carolina, releasing carbon dioxide into the air every year equivalent to 500,000 cars on the road.

Western North Carolina Needs a Clean Energy Future!

Historic hot temperatures, droughts, superstorms and raging wild fires in 2012 leave no doubt that climate disruption is here. The largest single source of carbon pollution in Western North Carolina is the Duke Energy Progress coal plant in Asheville. Please provide leadership on jump-starting the clean energy economy and help solve the climate crisis by phasing out the Asheville Coal plant.

Our community is at risk from the air and water pollution coming from the Asheville Coal Plant and the two coal-ash sites that loom over I-26 and the French Broad River. Illegal pollution is seeping from the coal ash sites into the groundwater and French Broad River. And the Environmental Protection Agency classifies the dams as a high hazard because if they break, it will likely result in the loss of life. Further, mountaintop-removal mined coal, which feeds the plant, destroys the land, water and homes of people in Appalachia.

Asheville is a clean and thriving city, but relying on coal prevents us from fully investing in a clean energy future. Please protect our health, our water, our air and our future and replace the electricity generated from the coal plant with clean energy solutions--like energy efficiency and solar power.
