Stop the Pipeline to Pollution in My State!

In response to President Obama's first international visit to Canada last month, more than 30,000 Sierra Club activists signed a petition urging the President to advocate for clean energy and say no to further development of the dirty Canadian tar sands oil.

In the meeting, President Obama acknowledged that Canadian tar sands oil “creates a big carbon footprint” and declared that the United States was going to demonstrate leadership on dealing with global warming pollution and advancing clean energy solutions.

But oil companies are still trying to build a pipeline from Canada so they can sell us their tar sands oil, one of the dirtiest fuels on the planet.

Let President Obama's State Department know you want clean energy that creates jobs in the United States instead of permitting a pipeline to pollution.

Stop the pipeline to pollution in my state

Dear  [Decision Maker],

The proposed Keystone XL pipeline would carry up to 900,000 barrels of this dirty tar sands oil every day. As a resident of a state directly affected by the pipeline's route I think my fellow citizens deserve an opportunity to share our concerns with the State Department in person. Please hold a public hearing about the pipeline in our state capitol with plenty of advance notice.

The Environmental Impact Statement for the Keystone XL Project has to include the full environmental impacts of producing, transporting, and refining tar sands oil, including global warming pollution, destruction of the boreal forest and its wildlife, use and pollution of water, deterioration of air quality and public health, and the rights of indigenous groups.

The alternatives to importing one of the world's dirtiest fuels, including improvements in fuel efficiency, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, advanced biofuels, and mass transit must also be evaluated in the Environmental Impact Statement.

Sincerely,
