Travis County commissioners seek legal guidance on Secure Communities

Travis County Judge Sam Biscoe and Commissioner Margaret Gómez have called for a closed-door discussion Tuesday of whether it’s constitutional for the Travis County sheriff’s office to detain people whom federal agents suspect are in the country illegally.

Recent court rulings have prompted immigrant rights advocates to press for an end to the sheriff’s participation in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement program, which they say is illegal and makes the county vulnerable to lawsuits.
