Mean Green football gets blown out by Indiana

The Mean Green football team ended their nonconference schedule with a 49-24 road loss to the University of Indiana on Saturday.

“It was very uncharacteristic what I saw from the sidelines today, from a fundamental stand point,” head coach Dan McCarney said.

The game didn’t start off well for the Mean Green (2-3, 0-1), as redshirt freshman quarterback Dajon Williams threw an interception on the first drive of the game. Indiana (3-2, 0-1) would start with the ball at the North Texas 31-yard line, which eventually lead to a touchdown by the Hoosiers to take an early 7-0 lead.

“Dajon made some real poor decisions in the first series in the game,” McCarney said. “He tried to force one in there. He will learn from it.”

The Hoosiers decided to try for an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff. The decision paid off as Indiana recovered the kick, which set up another touchdown to put them up 14-0.

Indiana scored another touchdown to go up 21-0, but The Mean Green offense started to click as they used a mix of Williams’ rushes and passes to mount an 80-yard drive. Williams ended the drive with a touchdown pass to junior receiver Carlos Harris for 20 yards, which trimmed the Indiana lead to 21-7 at halftime.

“If we didn’t have some character and resolve in this team it could have gotten real ugly,” McCarney said. “Our kids fought back, but we were clearly out played by this football team today.”

Whatever momentum the Mean Green had at halftime was quickly erased as Indiana would add to their lead in the third quarter. Hoosiers senior running back D’Angelo Roberts got loose for a 47-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-7, and the Hoosiers would score again on their next possession to go up 35-7.

The Mean Green would eventually go into the fourth quarter down 42-10, but Williams threw two touchdown passes to make it a 42-24 game.

The Hoosiers, however, scored one more time to go up 49-24 and put the game completely out of reach.

Williams finished the game with 206 passing yards and three touchdowns but, also two interceptions. Junior wide receiver Carlos Harris had 120 receiving yards and a touchdown on 11 catches, which was a career high.

“You would love some momentum coming out of nonconference play going into conference play, but there is a lot of resolve, there’s is a lot of grit in this program. We will not accept today,” McCarney said.

The Mean Green play their second Conference USA opponent next week on the road against the University of Alabama-Birmingham next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
