This October, Cornell Health International – the largest student run organization at Cornell University’s Ithaca campus–will be hosting its third annual Health and Development Conference. Each year, students, teachers, and members of the health community, come together to share global health news and advancements that embody the idea of Transforming Knowledge into Action. This year, the conference will focus on “Engineering Global Health,” showcasing new innovations that aim to improve global health. These technologies may be unorthodox but cost-effective, or they may be complex but game-changing, but they come from common hopes to change the lives of others for the better. Join us in our exploration of such efforts to take world health into the future on Saturday, October 26th, at Cornell Univeristy.
April 22, 2011: Penn State Dubois Campus, Dubois, PA
(Friday - Earth Day) at 12:15-1:15 in Hiller Auditorium: "Humanure - The Inexhaustible Natural Resource." Abstract: "All animals produce manure, including humans. Yet, humanity has thus far not succeeded in constructively managing or recycling its own excretions. In the United States, water pollution and declining soil fertility are the results. Disease and death are common consequences in the third world, where water pollution from fecal contamination of the environment can have disastrous effects on public health. Yet, human excrement can be constructively recycled using microorganisms in aerobic composting environments, thereby eliminating the disease factor and creating valuable soil fertility. Such excrement, since it is not wasted, is called "humanure," rather than the common term "human waste," which refers to discarded (wasted) human excretions. This presentation will discuss various issues related to humanure recycling."
