Tim Larkin is completely right in what he says about self defense. However, this book is not ready for primetime and will be of limited use to any woman. Here is why:

1. No illustrations. Not one. Zero zip nada (except for one meaningless lame one).
2. No list of targets with photos of how to attack them.
3. A very lame and badly written section on microexpressions, with an incorrect and useless description of contempt.

This book needs to be rewritten with generous illustrations and photos that show how a woman should attack various targets, and the section on body language and microexpressions should be rewritten by someone who knows what they are talking about.

Not ready for distribution just quite yet imho.

This book gets its length from the repetitive nature of the author. He repeats ideas and full sentences (even paragraphs!), but never says anything helpful. He also spends a lot of time trying to convince someone (presumably the women reading the book) that violence is acceptable if it's an attacker or you (the woman). As someone (a woman) who accepts this without question, I found this repeated information tedious.

Most importantly, the book contains no useful information. The strike information is very basic and, to me, common sense. It would have been a useful book if the author had jumped right in with actual information and included diagrams or pictures. As it is, the book was both a waste of money and of time.

Tim Larkin brings decades of experience to the topic of women's ability to protect themselves from violent attack. It may be hard to wrap your head around some of the concepts - like asocial violence - but Larkin makes a convincing case that women have been woefully underserved by the "self defense" industry, and cheated into thinking they stand no chance against a larger attacker. With Larkin's simple techniques, and most importantly the mindset he imparts, women will be forever empowered against the fear that is too often a part of their daily lives. Highly recommended.

Larkin's book gives the why and how behind his Target Focus Training, which is the best, most effective approach to self protection. It works, it's simple, it can't be taken away from you, and is instantly available when you need it. It would be nice if the book came with attached videos showing the basic dynamics of body movement and targets, but a search on YouTube will come up with plenty. If you have the chance to take one of Larkin's weekend seminars, by all means do it! You'll never regret it! Starting next semester (it was published too late for this semester) this book will be a required textbook for my class in self defense.

I found his insight into how and why women react to violence very interesting, and eye opening! He uses real examples of people being attacked and why their reactions were successful or not. He covers to great lengths how women are told not to fight back, to go along with their attacker so they won’t be injured. I remember being told that in college, fighting might get you injured. Apparently, the campus powers that be did not think rape was injurious. I’m sure that stance contributed to the rampant rapes that were occurring at that time! I can only wonder how fewer rapes there would have been if some of the rapists had their knees shattered and their eyes gouged out as the author suggests. Women are easy prey, weaker, usually preoccupied while out and about. What he advocates is something anyone, weak, young, or old, can do to an attacker. The idea is to be the aggressor, match viciousness for viciousness. If you are attacked, go on the offensive! Do whatever it takes to be able to walk away and survive! The ideas is also to avoid situations that put you in danger. Know the difference between someone being obnoxious and throwing a lot of bravado and one who means to do you actual violent harm. The author takes great care in defining the difference. If you are going to use deadly force, or seriously maim someone, you better be sure that you felt your very life was in danger!
What I felt was lacking in the book was explicit instructions on what to target on an attacker to stop the onslaught. He mentions 70 vulnerabilities, but a chart showing them would be very helpful!
I pray I never have to defend myself. I try to be very aware of my environment. I keep an eye out around me and around my vehicle. I made up my mind years ago that I would not just go along with an attacker.

Chapter One Begins "Life, in many ways, is like a game. We all live by a set of rules to govern sane, socialized behavior, and when we all play by these rules, people live happy lives in relative safety." But what if I meet someone who is not playing by that same set of rules? What if someone is out to hurt me? The advice that "fighting back will make him angry" has been disproven over these past years. As a woman, I think about this frequently; I am probably more vulnerable since I live alone and often am on the streets walking alone. Did you know that 1.9 million women are physically assaulted in the U.S. each year? That number is frightening, because it make me wonder if I might be next.

Tim Larkin, the author, is a self-defense expert who was named "Black Belt Magazine's 2011 Self Defense Instructor of the Year" He suggests targeting specific areas. if needed, in a strategic counterattack that could save your life. He also discusses how predators think. The principles he teaches work regardless of a woman's size, strength,or athleticism. On a side note, this book is dedicated to Joie Ruth Armstrong who was murdered by a serial killer in Yosemite National Park. If she had known about these strategic moves, she could be alive today. I'm motivated for the first time to purchase items of self-protection; pepper spray, a siren, or something that I could use to pull off "the big 3" (my term): Penetration, rotation, or injury. I will seriously check out the possibilities. This book has made me a believer that, by carrying the right items, I can get myself out of a potentially bad situation.
