Airplanes were everywhere, but we still had to walk.
The National Business Aviation Association brought its annual convention and exhibition back to Orlando, Oct. 21-23, and it is immense. The event includes more than 1,000 exhibitors with more than 25,000 business aviation professionals in attendance. Exhibits are spread over 25 acres at the Orlando Executive Airport and in the North and South buildings at the Orange County Convention Center. This show puts the space in aerospace.
NBAA 2014 also puts the happy into the local tourism economy. All those heads need beds — an estimated 27,097 total hotel room nights to be exact — as well as meals, entertainment and a few minutes of relaxation. Jetex Flight Support even booked an event at Pointe Orlando's Capital Grille. Their company banners were visible around the exterior of the restaurant.
"We've got meetings and dinners and sales appointments set up each day," said Gulfstream Vice President of Communications Steve Cass. "Events like this are all about face time."
Anyone with anything to do with business aviation could get face time with companies ranging from engine repair to upholstery. Tours were given through several aircraft, many of which featured couches, beds and full kitchens. And with big-ticket items like this on display, the amenities on the company floor space were just as luxurious. Bars, couches, meeting rooms and special dining areas were not uncommon in the exhibits at the convention center. And several temporary buildings were set up for meetings and hospitality at Orlando Executive Airport. "We've been going nonstop to get ready," said Kim Showalter of Showalter Flying Service last week during event set-up.
