EARLE CABELL FEDERAL BUILDING AND COURTHOUSE

Built in 1971, the Earle Cabell Federal Building and Courthouse contains approximately one million gross square feet spread over 16 floors, plus the basement and sub-basement. It is adjoined to the historic 19-story Santa Fe Federal Building to the east. The Cabell Building is home to various court related agencies, which includes the United Stated District Court for the Northern District of Texas; U.S. Court of Appeals Fifth Circuit; U.S. Bankruptcy Court; U.S. Magistrate Court; U.S. Probation; U.S. Pretrial Services; U.S. Attorney; and U.S. Marshals Service. It is also home to various other federal agencies, such as the IRS, Department of Agriculture, Health and Human Services, U.S. Corps of Engineers and GSA.

The building was named in honor of Earle Cabell who served as Mayor of Dallas from 1961-1964, and as Congressman from 1965-1973. Two unique features located in the first floor lobby area, a portrait of Earle Cabell and a photograph and display of the actual pen used by President Johnson in signing the appropriations for the Dallas Federal Office Building presented to Earle Cabell and Dallas Civic Leaders on August 16, 1965.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Dallas Division offers community outreach programs to increase public awareness about the role and function of the federal courts and to meet and hear from the court’s judges, officers, and staff. These programs are available upon request to educational and civic organizations, and free of charge to all persons in the community the Court serves throughout the Northern District of Texas (Dallas, Fort Worth, Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock, San Angelo and Wichita Falls). The programs include the opportunity to tour the courthouse, observe court proceedings, meet with the judges, officers and staff of the offices that comprise the Court family.

In scheduling tours, priority will be given to educational institutions and civic organizations located in the Northern District of Texas. Tours are generally limited to two per quarter.

NOTE: All tours, mock trials and agency visits are scheduled by appointment only.

NOTE: When visiting the courthouse you will go through security (magnetometer and x-ray machines). We recommend that visitors not bring large backpacks or purses. Cameras, tape recording devices, laptops, PDAs, and cell phones with cameras or tape recorders built in are not allowed on court floors. Weapons or sharp objects that could be used as weapons are strictly prohibited.
