Not since early 2011 have gas prices in Los Angeles been this low.

Not since early 2011 have gas prices in Los Angeles been this low.

The AAA and Oil Price Information Service reports that the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in L.A. County dropped Tuesday to its lowest amount since Feb. 18, 2011, decreasing 1.3 cents to $3.53.

The average price has dropped 18 consecutive days and 41 of the past 42, dropping 29.5 cents over that span, including 1.9 cents on Saturday.

The average price is 10.4 cents less than one week ago, 23.1 cents lower than one month ago and 26.3 cents below what it was one year ago.

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but why are prices at the pump falling? Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern California points to the plummeting price of oil and wholesale gasoline.

"Provided no supply issues occur locally, we can expect prices to continue dropping at least in the near future," Spring told the Los Angeles Daily News.

The news was also good for Orange County motorists, as the average price dropped to its lowest amount since Dec. 22, 2011, decreasing 1.3 cents to $3.51. It is 9.6 cents less than one week ago, 21.4 cents lower than one month ago and 24.6 cents below what it was one year ago.

The average price in Orange County has gone down 17 consecutive days and 39 of the past 41, dropping 28.2 cents over that span.
