State Department of Housing and Economic Development data released on Friday offers an in-depth look at how out-of-reach rental housing is becoming in desirable areas.
The data, which was part of a report on housing, shows apartment vacancy in Maryland is at a nine-year low. That helps explain why developers have been so gung-ho to build new housing — particularly in Baltimore, where nearly 4,000 units are in the pipeline.
Many families are being priced out of some of the fastest-growing neighborhoods. Take downtown, which Downtown Partnership of Baltimore Inc. has long promoted as the city's fastest growing neighborhood.
Downtown is tied for fourth with the northern half of Roland Park as having the least affordable rental housing in the city. Downtown Partnership President Kirby Fowler said he has not yet reviewed the report, but said it's important to provide housing at a variety of price points downtown to help attract both families and younger workers.
Here's a look at the 10 least affordable neighborhoods in Baltimore.
- South Patterson Park/Canton: 100
- Cross Keys: 100
- Mount Washington: 98
- North Roland Park/Poplar Hill: 91
- Downtown: 91
- Hanlon-Longwood: 85
- Tuscany-Canterbury/Guilford: 84
- Key Highway/Federal Hill: 83
- Lauraville: 82
- Cross Country/Fallstaff: 82
The figure associated with each neighborhood represents how many rental units per 100 are unaffordable for families earning 50 percent or less of the area median income.
