The Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday waived defensive end Michael Sam, the first openly gay player in the National Football League.

Sam had been on the Cowboys' practice squad since Sept. 3, after he was cut by the St. Louis Rams, the team that drafted him in the seventh round of the NFL draft last spring.

"I want to thank the Jones family and the entire Cowboys organization for this opportunity, as well as my friends, family, teammates, and fans for their support. While this is disappointing, I will take the lessons I learned here in Dallas and continue to fight for an opportunity to prove that I can play every Sunday" Sam wrote on his Twitter account.

Sam never made it to the Cowboys' 53-man roster, instead spending the first seven weeks of the season on the practice squad.
