The Mean Green soccer team suffered its first Conference USA lost of the season to Florida Atlantic University 2-0 on the road Friday night.

“This is a tough loss since we were on a good roll,” head coach John Hedlund said. “We made some mistakes on defense. We had a lot of shots but we missed them.”

North Texas (10-4-1) came into the game on a four game winning streak and tied Rice last Sunday. But the team went down by one goal in the 19th minute after a penalty kick was awarded to FAU, thanks to a Mean Green foul in the box.

FAU extended its lead to 2-0 in the 36th minute, which is all it would end up needing to win. North Texas had opportunities to try and get on the board in the second half and out-shot FAU 7-2 in that half, but could not capitalize.

“We were unlucky since we out shot them, but we had a good effort,” sophomore forward Rachel Holden said.

The team had 16 shots for the entire game, but couldn’t get any of them to go in.

“We got ahead of ourselves we really need to connect,” junior forward Amber Haggerty said.

The Mean Green’s next game is another road game against Florida International University Sunday at 12 p.m.
