Theresa M. Larivee is taking over as executive director of Pennsylvania Hospital on Nov. 1.

She is succeeding Dr. R. Michael Buckley, who is retiring after four years of leading Pennsylvania Hospital, where he spent 37 years as an infectious disease physician and chief medical officer.

Larivee, 53, was previously vice president of financial operations and budget for the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Prior to that, she was senior vice president and chief financial officer at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

Larivee said she isn't planning any radical changes for the medical center at 8th and Spruce streets in Center City.

" Recognizing I am joining a well-functioning organization, my first priority is to listen to and learn from the Pennsylvania Hospital community — at a detailed level," she said.

Pennsylvania Hospital's leadership has been "forthright with suggested priorities," she said. Her goal is to blend those recommendations with the hospital's "external imperatives" into a plan that can be executed in a timely and transparent manner.

Pennsylvania Hospital, founded in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond, has the distinction of being the country's first hospital.

John George covers health care, biotech/pharmaceuticals and sports business.
