Eat local: Farmers markets offer bounty of season’s best

File/Staff Photo
If you like sweet potatoes, now’s the time to get out your favorite recipes using them.

Beautiful weather, spiked with a little rain, has given us a long fall produce season of abundance at farmers markets.

Highlights include sweet potatoes, kale, all manner of late-summer, winter and even heirloom squashes (acorn to zucchini), greens (collard, turnip and mustard) plus bok choy, onions, sweet and hot peppers, onions, pie pumpkins, hydroponic lettuces and spinach, to name a few of the offerings you’ll find.

Not every item is available at every market. If farm-fresh local produce is your thing, go to markets with an established farmer presence, among them the White Rock and Vickery Meadow local markets, Coppell, McKinney, Dallas and Cowtown in Fort Worth.

Coppell will feature pears this weekend and possibly apples from one grower, plus organic vegetables and greens from Johnson’s Backyard Garden in Denton.

It’s also not too early to order Thanksgiving goodies and holiday gifts for the foodie on your list.
