UNT’s Saturday art event aimed at kids and teens

School is in, and the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design is opening the school’s main gallery for a program for children and teens.

The school year’s first “Saturdays in the Gallery” event will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. The events are for youths in kindergarten through 12th grade and their families. They visit a UNT gallery to survey exhibitions and take part in related activities.

The program begins with an activity related to the gallery’s current exhibition, FotoFest’s “Discoveries of the Meeting Place.” The show features photographs by emerging artists from around the world, selected from the “Meeting Place Portfolio Review” from the 2012 Houston FotoFest Biennial.

After the activity, guest artist Jeff Amano, a Denton-based graphic artist and novelist, will talk about his work and engage families in a visual storytelling exercise. He is working on a TV series based on his graphic novel Red Warrior and writing and illustrating his first picture book, Sam-Sammy Samurai.

Volunteers from the UNT chapter of the National Art Education Association, who are studying to become art teachers, will help guests with the activities. The UNT students also come up with the curriculum and projects.

The UNT Art Gallery is on the first floor of the UNT Art Building, 1201 W. Mulberry St. Guests can park for free nearby on Mulberry and Welch streets.

Upcoming “Saturdays in the Gallery” will be Nov. 8, Feb. 7 and April 11.
