Local unemployment remains steady
The unemployment rate in the city of Denton did not change from June to July, holding at 4.6 percent.
The county rate had a minor increase over the same time period, increasing from 4.9 percent in June to 5 percent in July.
Local areas are staying stronger than the state and country overall. The state is at 5.6 percent when it’s not adjusted for the season — the same metric used for the city and county rates. For that method in the United States, unemployment for July sat at 6.5 percent.
Fundraiser for Denton Heart Walk scheduled
The Denton American Heart Walk isn’t scheduled until September, but fundraisers are underway.
At McAllister’s Deli on Loop 288, 10 percent of the profits made between 5 and 10 p.m. Tuesday will benefit the heart walk.
The Heart Walk, coordinated by Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton, is scheduled for Sept. 13 at Apogee Stadium.
Legal battle for Captain Nemo’s ongoing
Though the owners of Captain Nemo’s in Denton and Irving were supposed to meet in court on Thursday, the hearing was canceled.
According to documents filed with the Dallas County courts, Tom Dirickson, the lawyer for Milton Fette and Randall Smith, owners of the Denton shop, could not attend because of an illness. A new date has not be filed.
Fette and Smith were sued by the Irving owner, William Miller, for taking his restaurant’s name without permission. Miller filed the lawsuit on July 9.
The temporary injunction hearing that was scheduled for earlier this week would have determined whether the Denton location could still be called Captain Nemo’s.
Compost Denton opens
A new company has launched out of the Denton Community Market — Compost Denton.
Owned and operated by Community Compost LLC, the company picks up organic waste from homes and businesses and turns it into soil.
Users can sign up for the service, which only has 22 spots left, and they will receive a compost bin.
Once users fill it up with organic waste, the service picks it up once a week.
