Texas’ New Abortion Law is Driving Women to Extremes

The 20-week abortion ban forced one woman to pawn her wedding ring and flee to Arkansas to terminate her pregnancy.

In late June, when state Rep. Jodie Laubenberg took to the floor of the Texas House in an electric-blue power suit and proposed a ban on abortions past 20 weeks of pregnancy, Sarah Guler wasn’t worried. In fact, she had no idea the fight over abortion was happening. When state Sen. Wendy Davis famously stood for 11 hours to block the bill and when the Texas statehouse became so crammed with protestors that state troopers sealed the doors, even then the news didn’t reach Sarah. As a busy mom in suburban Houston, she didn’t think much about politics. Instead she was preoccupied with child rearing, volunteer work and part-time studies. (Sarah Guler isn’t her real name. The Observer agreed not to reveal her name or certain identifying details.) In September Sarah learned she was pregnant. She and her husband called it their “miracle child.” Because of Sarah’s health problems and two complicated pregnancies, they had feared she’d never conceive again. Now they felt like the luckiest couple alive.

In October, not long into Sarah’s first trimester, Texas’ new anti-abortion bill took effect. Part of the new law required abortion physicians to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. The clause involved so much red tape, and proved so difficult to satisfy, that overnight one-third of Texas’ abortion clinics stopped taking patients. Legal challenges ricocheted around the federal courts, causing the media to focus on the distances women now had to travel to get an abortion. The ban on abortions after 20 weeks wasn’t part of the legal challenges, and neither the state health department nor doctors’ groups issued any guidance to health providers or abortion clinics about how they should comply with the new 20-week ban. So it slipped quietly and largely unremarked into law.

A few days before Christmas, the Gulers went to the obstetrician’s office for the 19-week ultrasound. They wanted to know whether to hang a pink or a blue stocking by the fireplace. But they never did find out the gender. Instead they learned that their miracle child had a brain defect so severe that the doctor described it as incompatible with life. Gasping, Sarah asked whether surgery or drugs could fix the condition, but the doctor shook his head. “If you’re looking for a baby that’s going to go to school and play soccer,” he told her, “this is not that child.” The doctor offered to do extra tests but added that the results would be the same. The baby would most likely be stillborn and if it survived birth, would suffer seizures every day of its short life. “If that were me,” Sarah thought, “I’d rather go to God.”

But she and her husband were in for another shock. When Sarah asked when the doctor could schedule an induction to abort the fetus, he shook his head. “We don’t do that here.” Instead, he gave her a list of abortion clinics and told her that she had only seven days to get an abortion. “You have to hurry because there’s a ban,” the doctor told them. “You’re already at 19 weeks. By next Friday, it will be too late.”

In the car on the way home, Sarah began calling the clinics on the list. Only two of them offered abortions up to 20 weeks of pregnancy. What followed was an odyssey of dead ends. Most clinics told her that they only offered abortions up to 16 weeks. One in Dallas referred her to a clinic in New Mexico, but that clinic couldn’t see her until January because it was closed for the holidays. Another clinic in Houston could schedule her on Dec. 26, but after a 24-hour mandatory waiting period she would be too far along to legally abort the fetus. Each receptionist gave Sarah another number to call until eventually she realized she had called some clinics twice. Sarah began to panic. She realized that if she failed to find a clinic in the next week, she would have to spend the remainder of her pregnancy waiting for the baby to die in utero.

“Texas can’t help us,” she said to her husband. “What the hell, let’s call Arkansas.”

There is only one abortion clinic in Arkansas, in Little Rock, and the kindness of the staff there took Sarah by surprise. She felt as if she had encountered compassion for the first time since her world shattered with the terrible news. Sarah received an appointment on Dec. 27 and was warned to psychologically prepare herself for protestors outside the clinic. The procedure would cost $3,500, but because the Gulers were on Medicaid, the clinic reduced the fee to $1,750. Clinic staffers also gave her the contact information for the National Network of Abortion Funds, a donor organization that provided her with further financial aid.

But still, cash was a problem. Her husband had to take time off work to drive to Arkansas, and they would have to borrow money to fix their car, which wasn’t fit for the long journey. They needed money for gas and accommodations as well as for the procedure itself.

The Gulers told only a few people about their plight: someone to look after their two children, two friends who would accompany them for moral support, and a small clutch of relatives whom they hoped would be sympathetic. Even among this select group, some questioned the ethics of their decision. One relative, whose wife had recently delivered a healthy child, suggested tersely that Sarah consult a religious expert before going through with the plan. For this reason, and for fear of condemnation spreading through their small conservative community, the Gulers didn’t tell anyone else.

Support the Texas Observer

As she waited for the days to pass before she could leave for Arkansas, Sarah spent sleepless nights searching the Internet. She looked for a hotline dedicated to her situation but was surprised to see support more readily available for drug or sex addicts than for people like her. She looked for stories about babies that had survived the condition her fetus had. She found nothing. Eventually, Sarah looked for information about the abortion clinic in Little Rock. The first page that came up was a garishly designed website labeled “Little Rock Family Planning Services Warning,” dedicated to “exposing the dangers at the Little Rock abortion clinic.” The site claimed that the abortion provider routinely committed safety violations, and speculated that babies were often born alive. It included grisly images of aborted fetuses and photos of the doctor who performed the procedures and his wife.

Sarah began to fear for her safety. She called her regular health provider and begged him to find a way to treat her in one of the specialist hospitals in Houston. She explained that she was going to an unknown clinic in another state and that if something went wrong, she might die. The doctor repeated that he could do nothing more to help her.

Meanwhile, the Gulers still needed money. They borrowed small amounts from friends without saying why they needed it. They threw their January rent money into the pot. The Gulers both hailed from middle-class Texas backgrounds but had fallen on tough times since the recession. Their family business had never quite recovered from the economic downturn, and they frequently wondered whether it would survive another month. Yet they firmly believed that with hard work, their financial luck would change. As they marshaled money to cover the abortion, it felt as if they were falling into a financial hole.

On the way out of town the evening of Dec. 26, still short of money, they stopped at a pawnshop. Sarah ventured inside and surrendered her wedding ring in exchange for cash.

Sarah, her husband and their two friends made the 10-hour drive to Little Rock overnight. It felt like a road trip of the most horrible kind. At gas stops, they shared meals and attempted conversation, but it seemed that they were trapped in a slow-motion nightmare. Near the Texas state line, a burst tire delayed their journey. Sarah had hoped to reach the clinic with enough time to prepare herself, but they arrived only minutes before the appointment. Five protestors, including a child, swarmed them near the clinic entrance. A woman shouted into Sarah’s face: “Ma’am, don’t hurt that child! This is not God’s way! You don’t know what your baby could become!”

Inside, after Sarah completed the paperwork, clinic staff left her alone in a room. On the table lay a book filled with handwritten stories of the women who had come before her. Sarah read about women unable to afford a child, who had split up with their partners, or who had four kids already and didn’t want any more. She flipped through the pages looking for someone like her, but found nothing. Later, the nurse told her that they often treated “genetic cases,” but the women never wrote about it in the book. Sarah understood. She hadn’t done so either, because she couldn’t imagine how to describe such anguish.

The surgical procedure took two days, during which time the clinic staff was consistently reassuring and kind. They explained the procedure, gave her a comfortable floral gown to wear and held her hands as she slipped into sedation. Outside, Sarah’s husband waited in the car. On the second day, a protestor yelled through his window: “You’re supposed to be protecting that woman! What kind of a man are you?”

Within half an hour of coming to on the second day, Sarah had to return to Texas with her husband. They couldn’t afford to stay in a motel for another night. On the drive home, Sarah felt trapped by physical and emotional pain. They drove in silence. A week earlier they’d been buoyed by all the support from family and friends during her pregnancy; now they felt alone. Sarah’s heart, mind and soul felt empty.

In early January, I met Sarah in a coffee shop near her home. By coincidence, she had read the 2012 Texas Observer story (“The Right Not to Know,” April 2012) about my own pregnancy termination. We’d both reeled from our shocking diagnosis of fetal abnormalities, both struggled with the trauma, but that’s where the similarities ended. I’d been able to access an abortion in my own town; Sarah had faced the extra distress of travel. I’d benefited from the compassion of a non-judgmental community—care packages appeared on my porch for weeks after the event—whereas the Gulers are still handling this alone. Sarah took great pains to emphasize the conservatism of her community, explaining that discussions about abortion are impossible, if not dangerous. For this reason, she asked me to give her a pseudonym and to omit any details that might make her identifiable. She told me her story with calm, quiet dignity and paused frequently to highlight the surprising acts of kindness she’d encountered along the way. The humanity of the staff at the clinic, for example, reassured her that empathy exists in unexpected places. She was humbled by the generosity of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, which wired her cash to cover her January rent, even though she wasn’t a client. The only time Sarah broke down was when she described the protestor who had verbally attacked her husband. “He’s the light of my life,” she sobbed. “How dare they put him in the same category as someone who abandons a woman?”

But Sarah still had questions. If lawmakers had banned abortions after 20 weeks, why didn’t they tell doctors to perform the detailed ultrasound earlier so that pregnant women have time to make a decision? She’d read the law itself and found an exemption for severe fetal abnormalities. Why hadn’t her doctor known this? Finally, the media talked about an abortion ban at 20 weeks, but the law stated that the ban kicked in at 22 weeks of gestation. Had she in fact had another two weeks to make a decision? If so, why hadn’t her doctor or the Texas abortion clinics told her?

I didn’t know the answers either, so I called the experts. Heather Busby, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, confirmed that the abortion ban goes into effect at 22 weeks of gestation. However, the law also defines the limit as 20-weeks post-fertilization, which she thought might be difficult for clinic staff and health providers to pinpoint. Doctors usually date pregnancies to the last menstrual cycle. “There’s a lot of fear and confusion out there,” she said, referring to fears of prosecution and the hostility of the anti-abortion movement in Texas, “so providers tend to err on the side of caution” by using 20 weeks post-gestation. Moreover, the wording used in the statute is not medical terminology, she argued: It defines post-fertilization as “the age of the unborn child as calculated from the fusion of a human spermatozoon with a human ovum.” It’s copycat language used by the pro-life movement that appears in similar bills in several other states. “No one knows what lawmakers mean,” Busby said.

It often falls to state agencies to interpret and implement new laws. In early January, I asked the Texas Department of State Health Services whether the agency had issued any guidelines to physicians or abortion facilities about the implementation of the law. It hadn’t. “The aspect of the law was self-implementing,” health department spokesperson Carrie Williams wrote in an email, “no additional guidance letter is needed from us at this time.”

Finally, I spoke to Dr. Moss Hampton, chair of the Texas chapter of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). He confirmed that the obstetric community had not received any information about the implementation of the law. He also echoed Busby’s point about the difficulty of pinpointing the exact stage of pregnancy. “How do you know when fertilization took place?” he asked, adding that such ambiguity makes it difficult for physicians to act within legal bounds. “There’s a firestorm around abortion in this state,” he said. “Any facility that does terminations on a regular basis would be reluctant to bring anyone in close to 20 weeks for fear of violating the law.”

Hampton wasn’t aware of discussions to move the second trimester ultrasound forward. The anatomy scans are more detailed at roughly 22 weeks when the fetus is bigger, he explained, so he didn’t think it would be practical to do them sooner. He confirmed that the condition suffered by the Gulers’ fetus likely would have fallen into the exemption category allowed by the 20-week ban. But like many physicians in Texas, he wasn’t aware of the exemption until our conversation. “Getting word out about this law is well within the bailiwick of ACOG District XI,” he concluded. “We have a newsletter that goes out to all OB-GYNs in Texas. It’s well within what we should be doing.”

Sarah Guler was dismayed when I gave her this information. She should have been exempt from the 20-week ban and legally had more time to make her decision than either her provider or the Texas abortion clinics had thought. “It would have made it so much easier to cope if I hadn’t had to make that trip,” she said to me quietly over the phone. But she was philosophical about the future. “If the leader of the Texas obstetricians puts out that information, then at least this might not happen to anyone else,” Sarah said. “At least that small change will happen because I told my story.”

In late January, Hampton confirmed that the upcoming Texas ACOG newsletter would contain information about the abortion ban, including details for physicians about exemptions for fetal anomalies. In the same week, Williams, the state health department spokesperson, told me that the agency had decided to issue a guidance letter after all, more than three months after the law took effect, to “help ensure licensed facilities were aware.” But the letter shed no further light on the details of the abortion ban, stating simply, “A physician may not perform or induce or attempt to perform or induce an abortion on a woman if the age of the unborn child is 20 or more weeks, effective October 29, 2013.”

The letter also referred physicians to the Texas Medical Board if they wanted additional information. A spokesperson for the Texas Medical Board told me in turn that the board provides information about the bill on its website. But the link leads only to the statute itself. According to the state health department, no further state guidance is planned.

would you alow a priest to pull your tooth?.

  • 1bimbo

saddened by the story of this woman. i am angry at her doctor for not discovering the condition of her baby sooner. 5 months into her pregnancy! i can’t imagine anything more horrific. wait, there is something – millions of healthy babies aborted each year.

    • Lisa Jennings

      And its your business why?

      • 1bimbo

because i am a moral person. have you volunteered at an adoption agency? or tutored low income children after school? worked with at-risk children at a camp? donated money to a non profit rec. center for kids? … those are the kinds of things that help babies after they are born and are nurtured by the community, but i guess it’s easier for some just to gripe at pro-lifers for trying to protect the unborn

        • mattfifth

Yes, over the years, I’ve given thousands of hours of my time in service to the neglected, hungry and homeless kids and parents in my communities.

I’ve seen the poverty, hardship, heartbreak regularly found amongst those who were unable to properly care for kids, as well as amongst the kids who never really got much care, love, attention. (And often, the person in one group winds up in the other, as well.)

And those experiences — filled with compassion, anger, confusion, despair — have only strengthened my passionate belief that all persons fundamentally deserve access to free, effective medical care.

And I say without hesitation, that that medical care should absolutely include a woman’s right to personally and freely choose any of the full range of options regarding her own pregnancy, including abortion.

          • 1bimbo

i can not, will not, make the leap from children experience hardship so women should seek more abortions. it’s immoral

          • mattfifth1720

Apparently, 1bimbo, you’re unable to perceive the rather significant difference between Proposition (1) People *should* engage in Behavior A; versus Proposition (2) People should have the full and free *RIGHT* to engage in Behavior A without hindrance.

        • DavidD

No you are a faux concern troll trying to advance your conservative agenda. We can read your comment history .
You are not a moral person and want to divert this issue because there is no defense for it and the consequences of your worldview are self evident.

          • 1bimbo

my assessment of you is you are a fascist control freak who thinks your brand of social justice will save the world. you glorify immoral behavior-a reflection of your own shortcomings, demean diverse thought and speech and wallow in self righteous indignation masked as intellectual superiority. in short, you are a looney liberal

        • Aquaria

You’re not moral. You hope for the death of women for having sex.

You are as evil as you are petty.

    • thinkingwomanmillstone

apt screen name. Not all conditions are detectable earlier. This woman was on medicaid…try to find a doctor who will take it. Where did you study genetics or fetal development so that you know for sure it could have been found earlier? Finally and most importantly, it is none of your business at all. Your anger should be directed at a state government who made this woman go through this.

      • 1bimbo

‘state government’? do we blame the state government for miscarriages? how about we blame ‘state government’ for autism, and addiction and cancer too…. what happened to that lady is terrible. with the support of her husband, her family, her community (but not her silly doctor) she will persevere

    • Legender

Most anomalies cannot be found until the second or third tremester, so her doctor was doing their job with the 19 week ultrasound. Re: your comment about “millions of healthy babies …”. This was NOT a healthy baby. How do you know that every other abortion is of a “healthy baby? Many aren’t, in fact in the last 20 years or so, there has been a dramatic increase in special needs children, and in the US an increase in maternal morbidity and mortality.

      • Jane Hardberry

I think people’s efforts would be so much better spent in helping women cross those lines of horrible sub-human demonstrators than trying to reason with them on this site. PP has volunteer positions open today in a clinic near all of us – so let’s get up from our screens and stop wasting time arguing with the sub-human forced birth scorched earth crowd

        • 1bimbo

‘forced birth’? you sound like an animal. that’s a baby trying to be born, thank you very much!

    • Really?

If Texas had the infrastructure, culture, support and finances to help women who have children they cannot afford, you would have less abortions. Abortion isn’t the problem, it is a symptom of a larger problem. Fix the actual problems, and the abortions will diminish. Better sex ed, more access to family planning, better funding for childcare, preschool, and educational outcomes, more money for college, and more prospects create people with more options, more ability to care for children, and folks who wait longer to actually have children. More funding for social services to help children in distress would also be useful. If you folks who are against abortion spent more of your time and money helping children who are already here instead of demonizing women and fighting for fetuses, you’d actually stop more abortions.

      • not_Bridget

Don’t forget that women’s clinics are closing all over the state. With contraception harder to get–especially for poor & rural women–there will be more unwanted pregnancies.

      • terafied

No. There will always be abortions. Deal with it.

    • Jane Hardberry

The truth is you wish those babies would be born and tortured – by living a life of poverty, not enough food, no place to live, jobs that pay 5 bucks an hour, no hope for a better future, no health insurance even – the America of today for so many.

      • 1bimbo

what the h*ll are you talking about. go volunteer in a food bank and while you’re at it, start a business and hire some people

    • terafied

Millions of women choosing to abort. That’s the part you hate.

    • http://frugalstudents.blogspot.com/ Ginger Lasky

Did you not fully read the article? The ultrasound cannot be done any earlier.

  • usakindatheart

are you flipping serious observer?? you want us to feel sorry for a woman that had to sell a ring, she obviously had no value over to kill her kid that she has no value for either…
The 20 week band is to get women to THINK! to go to prenatal care, to SEE her child’s heart beat, to KNOW it is a baby, not just some liberal lies of bloody flesh and that is all it is…
a child is a child.. and if some one wants to kill a human being, the most we can do as a society is try to give that person a pause.. to reflect on what their decision really means.
I have NEVER met anyone years later after an abortion that says, WOW sure am glad I killed that kid, WOW my life is so much better since I killed that kid.. .ect..
no.. they feel tremendous GUILT, and FEAR for what is coming for them, after they die

    • Asher B. Garber

To paraphrase your comment, WOW, I can’t believe that an UNINFORMED MORON would possibly READ the Observer!

    • Lyric Thompson

Did it escape your attention that the developing life wouldn’t have survived? DID THAT ESCAPE YOUR ATTENTION?

    • Lisa Jennings

Can you read – can you comprehend?
Tell us how you promote a culture of life for people born here now – I’d really like to know.

    • S. Nitka

I am sorry this family went through such misery and am so upset at the intolerance of some posters here. I’m very happy that I aborted a unwanted fetus when I was very young and neither ready nor willing to be a mother. It would have ruined my life and adoption agencies were not available. I have no guilt. Zero. There are billions and billions of eggs and sperm — potential fetuses — that can become fertilized but don’t. So what — yout want to protect them too! I am now a happy mother with 4 beautiful and much wanted children. Raise you own kids properly and stay the hell out of the private lives of others.

    • Hollywooddeed

Keep your pointy nose out of other people’s business.

I’ll give up my bodily autonomy, constitutional rights and most personal decisions to the government right after you do.

      • mattfifth

That’s probably not the best idea, actually.

Remember, many of the folks we’re dealing with have been indoctrinated into a deeply hierarchical culture — one that promotes faithful obedience to religious authority as being a virtue.

Thus, the odds that they might be persuaded to give up any or all of those rights and freedoms is probably much higher than you’d care to imagine.

    • Dusya

How would you know what people feel like?I have no guilt, no fear; frankly, I have nothing to be afraid of. I did what was right for me at that point in time and have NEVER looked back. Your opinion is based on ignorance and antiquated theories. I am so tired of this judgment and religious mambo-jumbo being spewed from the likes of you. This one-track mind that you so generously share with us is nothing but stale regurgitation. Have an original thought or idea for once. Have pity on a mother’s health, circumstances, stability, etc. Not every egg needs to produce a chick. Abortions save lives, ease pain, and minimize our over-extended social service system. I realize it is difficult for you to think
outside the box in which you exist, but do us all a favor and give it a try.

    • ultrawiz

Wow! You are even more brain-dead than that poor fetus.

    • ACSMA

Not really interested in your ranting about your Sharia law, or whatever it is you christofascists call it.

    • bvocal

Die a horrible death you insensitive, bulling, creep.

    • ALM

Yes, you have met them. You’re just too myopic to realize it, and too judgmental for them to have shared their stories with you.
      No guilt whatsoever here.

    • GB

It is a 20 week BAN, not the 20 week BAND.

    • sandrajeanford

Bull. I have never met a woman who regretted her abortion so you are lying. And it is not a kid, nobody that gets an abortion feels as though they have killed a kid, they feel they have terminated an unwanted pregnancy. Most women that get abortions already have kids so they don’t need time to think, what do you think brings them to the decision to have an abortion…..THINKING. I suppose when you are just ignorant and refuse to deal with reality, all you have is to is screeching and screaming pointlessly.

    • Kathryn Ranieri

News flash: Women know when they are pregnant that they are pregnant with a human fetus. They do NOT need shaming, moralizing jerks to tell them that. They don’t need to be forced to see or hear a heartbeat if they don’t want to. Women are supposed to be full citizens in the United States with rights to make decisions for themselves—-perhaps not in Texas?

      • 1bimbo

the only thing worse than ‘shaming’ is your ‘victim’ narrative.

        • Asher B. Garber

Actually, have you looked in the mirror? Or read your idiotic comments? You’re quite disgusting. Probably because you’re some sadist dressed up as a woman-bashing douche. Enjoy your day!

    • usakindatheart

wow so many guilty people writing and rationalizing there choices to murder their kids.. very sad. I will pray for you

      • OhJoy

Oh, don’t, pray for us, you freakish extremist Christian. Just get lost and leave the government out of our bodies and what we decide we do with them. Why don’t you start with the basics of a kind hearted person and keep your sanctimonious attitude to yourself.

      • Margaret McGuire

Maybe instead of praying for us, you could go back to high school (if you ever left) and learn proper grammar. “Rationalizing THERE choices”? Really?

      • leftynyc

I don’t see anyone feeling guilty although you want them to. It must be awful to be such a judgmental loser who thinks they know what’s best for everyone else on the planet. I’ll pray for your sorry soul.

      • Dusya

        1. No thank you.
        2. Please learn the difference between there, their, and they’re before you get a say regarding matters of consequence such as lives. Baby steps.

      • Expatmom

So, dude, what perfect church do you attend?? I can’t come up with one that wasn’t guilty of burning, lynching, drowning, starving, raping, stealing, enslaving, you know–the religious duties. Which guiltless church did you happen to stumble into? Yeah, the one with no sin, whatsoever???? Please, share with us, the murdering mothers.

      • kissyface

pray for yourself. also read your bible and start with judge not lest ye be judged and let the person without sin cast the first stone

    • Margaret McGuire

You must only talk to people that think the exact same way you do, which is sad for you. Try talking to someone like myself, who had no way to pay for a second child, who was struggling as it was with one, and being told by government assistance that we didn’t qualify because we made too much money. Aborting that child gave myself and my husband the means to take care of the breathing child we already had to provide for.

I knew I was having a baby, and I knew that my 1 year old son meant more to me than anything on the planet and I was going to do anything to provide for him and make sure his needs were met. I knew that aborting that fetus was the best thing for my family. And I know that I have absolutely no regrets about doing it.

    • Erin

How do you know what will come for them after death? She would have kept the child if it were able to survive, you ignorant bible-thumper. And do you just so happen to speak to hundreds of women that underwent abortions years later? Who the hell are you? And who are YOU to judge? Actually, I know exactly who you are… another hypoChristian who picks and chooses what they want to believe from the bible. If you were an true Christian (or just a generally decent person), you would not pass such harsh judgement so easily. You’re awful.

    • terafied

I and my friends who have aborted are very relieved to have done so. The difference is we don’t think of it as “killing a kid.” Are you a male, by any chance?

    • leftynyc

Well, now you’ve met one (several from what I’m seeing in response to your rant). I have ZERO guilt for doing what was best for me at the time. And I have no worries about what will come after I die – the G-d I believe in is benevolent – not the scary monster that you apparently believe in.

  • redastcyr

How disgusting this is My heart goes out to that woman an her family Why in the hell can’t other people mind their own business If you don’t every need an abortion or refuse to have one out of need Then don’t but stay the hell out of other folks business No one likes abortions We just believe it is a woman’s right to choose what is best for her!

    • Geraldine Peterson

      Amen to that!

    • Mag

My question is this. Why in the hell do the women of texas and the men who care about them, keep voting for the likes of Perry and perhaps soon, Abbott? This is Perry’s doing and it will be Abbott’s as well. Women like Sarah who never thought they’d find themselves in this position were more than willing to trade their vote for those that do. I don’t mean unsympathetic in the least but I don’t understand why any woman would want to vote for someone who wants inject government and/or their personal opinions in to her health care rights. I just don’t understand it.

      • Courtney Lee

I think it’s like this article said– Sarah never thought abortion was something that could “happen to her.” It was just this political talking point in her life.

There’s a narrative out there that only “sluts, whores, and irresponsible teens” need abortions, when the truth is that any woman may at some time in her life need a life-saving abortion, or may have to face a decision similar to Sarah’s, or may be the statistical anomaly that gets pregnant even when taking all of the “right” precautions. Until we all internalize that abortion isn’t something that happens to “them,” it’s something that happens to “us,” many voters don’t prioritize the right to choose when they go to the polls.

(Notes: I put the misogynistic language in quotes because it’s obviously ridiculous and slut-shaming and I don’t hold that opinion of women at all.)

      • vippy

Because living here I have long acknowledged that one cannot fix stupid!

        • Mag

Then, I don’t want to hear it. We all have a responsibility with the vote that we have. If one continues to vote against their own interests, who is responsible?

          • Expatmom

Southern states have a long history of voting for the guy standing on their throats. I’m hoping that will change soon!

          • usakindatheart

lol.. standing on their throats?? no one is standing on any one’s throats..
your liberal attitude about down south is just stupid and ignorant. I copy these comments and bring them into work .. everyone laughs…

          • Expatmom

I grew up in the South, Bucko! After living many years overseas & in New England, I am back in the deep, Deep South. It’s gotten worse in the past 25 years!!!! Yes, you go ahead & copy the comments. You & your good-ole-boy club enjoy your sophomoric jokes because it’s about to be over for y’all! That’ll be a stiletto heel you’ll be removing from your crotch.

      • NTSF

I really feel for this woman, but the fact that she never thought abortion could happen to her and so just ignored the issue implies a lack of empathy for women to whom abortion could happen. Being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes is just being a decent person. And the calling card of the GOP seems to be ‘me first.’

        • Mag

The thing is, it isn’t just elective abortion. There was another woman in Texas recently who suffered some kind of seizure while she was pregnant and was kept on life support because of the pregnancy, despite the fact that she had specific wishes never to be put on life support, was early in her pregnancy and the baby was not likely to survive in any event. The state put her family through hell and enormous legal expenses, forbidding the doctors to pull the plug because of the pregnancy. This is that kind of freak stuff that happens to people and the notion that it won’t happen to you is ludicrous.

90% or so of women use contraceptives for birth control purposes at some point in their lives and for the politicians to paint them to be harlots is horrible. Many more use the same contraception to stave off either severe menstrual symptoms if you are young or menopausal symptoms if you are older. I hate to break it to women but each and every one of us is going to go through these two times of our lives and most likely need some help along the way. Yet we vote for neanderthals who think we are harlots for using it and enacting legislation to severely restrict its access? What is wrong with Texas women? they don’t like the government intruding in their lives but when it comes to their bodies,, they don’t seem to mind.

          • Robyn Kern

I saw a tremendous number of Texas women who came to the capitol when Wendy Davis did her marathon filibuster, and I thin there will be some of those women at the polls this next time around, however, they do lie to vote for some of these losers.

          • Mag

Which brings me back to my original point. Women voters outnumbered men in the last elections. If they and the men who respect them insist on voting against their own interest, it is hard to feel empathy for the situations they find themselves in.

          • usakindatheart

            wendy davis is nNUTS

          • Aleta McVey

Mrs Munoz, the woman you are talking about, had a pulmonary embolism and was oxygen deprived for an hour or two. They got her into the hospital and got her heart beating again. They did a scan and found she did not have brain activity. Since she was 14 weeks pregnant they couldn’t take her off life support. When you loss activity in your brain, your body is essentially dead and it will shut down system by system. Your kidneys will shut down, you will start secreting enzymes because your body is trying to shut itself down. You ARE dead. They kept her on this “life-support” for 2-3 months while her husband sued them to remove it. She was in the beginning stages of DECOMPOSITION and gestating a fetus that was not viable. All the while, Abbott and the other Republican candidates said during the debate that they WOULD CREATE NEW LEGISLATION THAT WOULD NOT ALLOW FOR A WOMAN LIKE MRS. MUNOZ TO BE TAKEN OFF LIFE SUPPORT. While Texas Right To Life was holding a prayer group outside the hospital praying that Mr. Munoz would lose the case. The politicians wanted to create stricter laws but hey don’t even know how this stuff works. That is why this system is outdated. We shouldn’t have Rep or Dems. We should have a committees of educated people that know what they are talking about when they pass these laws. Like AHCA, Abortion laws… etc. These are medical issues and it’s having an impact on the medical community because they don’t even know what these politicians are saying. That was the same reason the hospital wouldn’t take her off life support because of the law, they didn’t want to misinterpret it. Look who paid the price. Her poor husband and her family. They couldn’t even go in that room towards the end because it smelled of death. WOW!!

          • Mag

Yes, I followed the story because I was horrified that this could happen in this country over a few backward men who want to impose their will.

          • usakindatheart

hog wash.. you have warped the story completely

          • Holly Hayes

Here are the actual statistics, in case anyone wants to know:

-99% of women practice contraception at some point in their life (this includes the pull out method, which DOES count as contraception, though an ineffective form of it).

-Just over 60% of the women who take birth control pills do so because of a medical condition, not because they are trying to avoid pregnancy.

-3 in 10 women in the US have an abortion at some point (that’s almost 1 in 3).

-Approximately 35,000 women in the US become pregnant due to rape every year. That doesn’t sound like an “exception” to me.

          • usakindatheart

thats ridiculous, must made the poll up your self, or got it from some woman’s lib poll.

        • Elizabeth S

Republicans have rigged the districts through gerrymandering to ensure they remain in office. I vote mostly liberal, but so do most people where I live, so it makes no difference. My friends in counties with legislators that supported this legislation vote liberal, but the districts are drawn specifically to minimize Dems and maximise Repubs. The end. While that gets fought in court and bogged down – these people continue to be elected and we can’t do anything about it.

          • guitargodkc

It’s more than just gerrymandering, it’s lack of voting. Of the fifty states, Texas comes in last in percentage of eligible voters actually voting. If eligible voters came out and voted, no amount of gerrymandering would help them. To many Texans believe that their vote doesn’t matter, that the election will go the way it has since Ann Richards left office! The vast majority of those that don’t vote, are politically center (moderates) or center left. Turning Texas people or blue all depends on voter turnout, that’s why suppression is so key to the GOP nationwide either through ID, reduced early voting, voter purges, or a combination of tactics they’ve been deploying the last several years. And SCOTUS gutting the VRA just have the GOP a license to do more.

          • Michael Russo

That’s why conservatives started the front of stricter voting laws. Apparently in Missouri 1/3 of African American Males cannot vote. They were disenfranchised after a felony conviction. Do you know how many African American Males live in Missouri? I’ll tell you, a lot.

          • usakindatheart

4 comments so far, and 2 from forced-birther trolls who show themselves woefully unable to digest even the simplest facts from the article. I suppose they wholeheartedly approve of what happened to Savita Halappanavar in Ireland, who died from blood poisoning after being forced to continue a pregnancy where the fetus had already died in utero. From the sounds of things, it won’t be long before women in Texas face a similar fate. I can only hope some sanity prevails before that happens.

    • Jane Hardberry

I’m going to call them Forced Birthers from now on. thanks for that more honest moniker. I don’t know how you can even hope that sanity would prevail, though. Be careful -saying one hopes for something can be an excuse for not fighting hard to change it.

    • Donna

This almost happened to me… My doctor and myself both knew that the fetus had died in utero and he made it clear that the longer the pregnancy continued, the more likely my life would be threatened by that situation. It was a Catholic hostpital and they refused to allow him to induce the abortion. It was required to continue until a “natural miscarriage” occurred. I will never go to that hospital again for any reason. They cared more about a dead pregnancy than they did about my life. I was nothing to them. And I am nothing to the trollers on this page, who believe I deserved to die if I couldn’t produce a live fetus. Make no mistake. That is what they think. ..They can rot. Every one.

      • kissyface

i had to drive 50 mile while miscarrying because the Catholic hospital refused to do a D&C.

      • Mister_YT

God hates you and yes you do deserve to die. Praise God!

      • usakindatheart

you are a liar, all catholic hospitals if the fetus has died, shown through ultrasound and ct scan because a dead baby stretches its body out, while a live baby is always in a ball shape.
anyways its called fetal demise and they put a capsule in your vagina that starts the process of losing up your cervix so you can deliver a dead baby whole. this allows the mother to hold the dead baby before she hands it over to mortuary and ultimately funeral.
        you donna are a LIAR

The maternal death rate in TX has skyrocketed in the last 15 years. Women’s Health is in a crisis down in TX – this is why I fight the fight – for all women and fund National Network of Abortion funds – so poor women have access and safe care.

    • DebS

Go down the chain … the children having children, the lack of adequate sex education, the children that are steeped in poverty and, of course, the refusal of TX to fund the ACA. Shameful. And yet you see women everywhere citing their religious beliefs to justify their abandonment of other women.

      • Kathryn Ranieri

Religion to justify shaming women, depriving women, scorning women? What kind of God do these folks believe in to do such heinous things as deprive women of comprehensive health care. And, yes, abortion and birth control ARE healthcare.

        • Lisa Jennings

          Hands clapping loudly!

      • Glenna Jones-Kachtik

We do have something called Healthy Futures. That is at least helping to drive the birth rate of teens down. But it doesn’t help the maternal birth rate that much.

      • usakindatheart

debS is ignorant of what is the truth in texas, just wants to believe what liberal lie/garbage some one wants you to believe

        • DebS

Not too “kind at heart,” are you? How about going with “judgmental, close-minded name-caller”?

  • LIB4EVER

TX right-wing don’t care about babies they just to pretend they do…I ask you this..when it come to aid for dependent children right-wing abortion nut are the fist one to talk about cuts. How do you think these women are going to take care of these children. Even if they could find employment the child will be raised by daycare, if they can afford it or family.

    • Chase

wait wait wait….so what you’re saying is, if you have a baby you shouldn’t have to work? Other people should provide all your needs for you. The state – TAX PAYERS – should pay you to stay home and take care of your baby. SIGN ME UP!!! I love babies, especially if it means I don’t have to work anymore.

      • LIB4EVER

what conservative don’t understand is this….pepale have abortion because they can’t take care of the child….If they had the child they would need help from the goverment and it just not their based on the right-wing.

      • leftynyc

I don’t see anyone stopping you from being a baby machine. Knock yourself out.

      • texasaggie

What she was saying, as someone with even minimal reading comprehension could see, was that if you are going to force a woman to have a baby when she can’t raise on her own, then you are responsible for helping out. Furthermore, she is saying that people who make it as difficult as possible to raise children do not have any place to then force women to have children.

        • usakindatheart

and yet texas do help mothers who are in need…
hmmmm such a novel idea, yet it works..

I wish someone would do a study on the amount of money Texas has lost in tourism and conventions since we have become the most right wing, bigoted and hateful State in the Union. It is not enough that we allow this sort of attitude but that we so enjoy making sure the world knows seems like it would create a mega loss of revenue.

    • KS

      You got that right!

    • David

So move, Texas doesn’t want someone like you.

      • Mackenzie

Real Texans don’t believe in hindering women’s rights, bigotry, hate, or any of this nonsense you’re spouting. People like you give Texans a bad name. Do the rest of us real Texans a favor and STFU.

          • Mackenzie

          • Rollins Warden

You care about lives? I call B*llsh*t. Texas has executed more people that the rest of the country combined, if you really cared about life you would abolish the death penalty. Otherwise you are just another one of the hypocrital jerks who are trying to control women.

          • David

If you take a life, you deserve to lose your life. Simple as that.

          • Rollins Warden

            Dear David,,

            Impressive for a paranoid Republican.

Texas has 84 proven wrong convictions, several of them came wthin days of being executed.
Personally I don’t think the government ought to have the right to kill someone without a declarationof war.

          • David

Sounds like a rounding error to me. Hopefully one day you are one of those executed.

          • David

really? do you not know about the state park budget story? read up

      • Lisa Jennings

Yea – cut education and women’s health care – balance that old budget.

But what about the cost to TX overall – unintended pregnancies, 25% of the population uninsured, towns imploding due to lack of oversight……fracking fracking fracking and air pollution . . . you can’t eat money or give money as a cure for cancer.

    • Lisa Jennings

Its true – I don’t go south of the Mason Dixon Line,

      • DebS

Lisa, I’m not an “indigenous” Texan and living here the past decade has been a real eye-opener in many ways. I have family all over the country: NY, NJ, FL, CA, OR, CO, WI … and the list goes on. People are fascinating. There are all kinds everywhere. In many ways I’ve found Texans to be among the kindest and caring. Go figure. Religion here plays a larger part in people’s lives than I’m used to, to be sure, but not everyone is an anti-choice fanatic. I hate the politics of this state — that goes without saying — but our mayor is a vibrant young Democrat and many of us believe that Wendy Davis will shake up the status quo of the Old White Guys who run this state. People have to work for change and avoid the divisive vitriol, many of whom seem to be commenting here. If you ever find yourself south of the Mason Dixon Line, you might be surprised. While Texas policies are cringeworthy, there are many working for change.

        • DavidD

          • KS

Cemeteries across the US are filled with young men and women that died in wars.
We are one people, however texas thinks it’s a country within itself. And it hasn’t
progressed like the rest of the US. It still treats women and minorities like second class citizens. It doesn’t surprise me that as a Texan man you have these archaic
ways of treating people. Wake up! the universe does not revolve around you good ole’ boys and your guns.

          • DavidD

You are not responding to what I said but are flailing away at a straw man. What part of we are one people can you not comprehend? Your counterstatement is nonsense because it contradicts itself in very short order and is so general as to be meaningless.
I despise the GOP and have been active for over forty years in fightning it.I am an individual and do not hold the position you falsely slander me with.Childish invective does not substitute for truth.
We are not you and have no obligation to fit your preconcieved notion of who we should be .That is what respect for diversity is all about.
Your advice is gratuitous and your intent is divisive.
You would obviously be more comfortable over at the GOP than pretending to be a progresive.

Do you preach diversity out of one side of your mouth while making simplistic general statements designed to inflame not to illuminate.
You are right ,I am not an educated man but it does not take one to figure out that what you are doing is very wrong and counterproductive.

wow – this may be the most ignorant comment I’ve ever heard. Women have NO rights under Sharia Law – what the hell is that matter with you.

      • john west

women’s rights are being stepped on by all factions, le
        d by the GOP.

      • Farmer Allis

Actually Chase, your statement is extremely ignorant, Sharia law grants women more rights than the Bible. But neither should be a concern since we live in a SECULAR country with SECULAR laws.

        • Mackinz

Supposedly, any way. Paleo-conservatives, etc. don’t care much for heretical things like separation of church and state.

          • Lisa Jennings

LOL! Paleo-cons! HAHAHAHA (Funny but sad too!)

      • Expatmom

Misogynists twisted the Koran into something very ugly. Mohammed believed women should be protected. He spoke more of Mary than the New Testament did. What Xtian extremists are doing here is NO different than what the Taliban has done. Both have nothing to do with spirituality & everything to do with control & power.

        • Chase

are you kidding me! Mohammed was a womanizer with several wives that he beat regularly.

women here have the same rights here as anyone else – you can do anything you want as long as it doesn’t harm someone else – like a baby.

          Get your facts straight.

          • terafied

“womanizer?” what is that? Is there a “manizer?”

          • Expatmom

Your lack of knowledge is so sad. His first marriage was happy & lasted 25 years until her death. Then, he took additional wives. It was the custom to marry widows & care for their children. He also had political marriages. He sought out the ideas of his wives. He also did household chores. Yes, Islam allows a man to hit his wife. The Bible speaks of wives as property. I lived for years in the Middle East & make a point of getting my facts straight! You should police your own “facts.”

          • jen

Not making as much for the same work, and not all states
passing the gender equality act (meaning that no, we are not equal under the
eyes of the law). That sure sounds equal to me….not…. Get your “facts” straight
and then come back and make a valid argument.

          • Lisa Jennings

Your ignorance of Islam is pathetic.

Chase mind opener: all the great religions have the same message: love.
Love your neighbor. Help the sick and elderly. Respect Planet Earth.

There have been over 2000 new laws aimed at women’s health care access, abortion, birth control, pretextual regulations – hmmmm – personhood and heart beat legislation – all unconstitutional and wasteful tax dollar spending.

          • Robyn Kern

And there have been ZERO laws aimed at men and their sexuality and their reproductive rights. And yes unless you go back to the religions that came prior to the current Christianity, Judaism and Islam all have “laws” that were derived by the men, so as to control women, why do you think they usurped all the pagan holidays, it was a matter of control.

          • Michael Russo

Penis pumps are covered under the ACA. Fact.

          • mtwyogal

Actually, Lisa, when it comes to women, the abrahamic religions were very clear that women caused the “downfall of man,” and were to suffer in childbirth, and were to be subservient to men. The “love” in the bible was only to be shown to those who weren’t of another religion, or the nonbeliever, and to many others.

          • Lisa Jennings

I am talking contemporary spiritualism – the evolution of the great religions not bible study.

          • Michael Russo

Get your facts straight. Mohammed would have NEVER married at all before his first partner died. Believe me, he did not decree that Allah allowed men to support multiple wives until she was long dead. Remember, she was the rich trading widow who supported him, and while she had his children, she REFUSED to marry him. And why should she? He had nothing, and was totally dependent on her. She would never have stood for him taking up with other women while she was alive. It wasn’t until after she died and a great war that left many women widowed that Mohammed had a “vision” from god that said a man may take another wife should he be able to support both equally.

In fact, many of Mohammed’s “Visions” happened conveniently this way. Curious.

      • rgisajerkalright

Don’t be foolish, women have no rights under christian law as we’ll.

        • usakindatheart

rgisajerkalright, you are wrong, and if you were a christian you would know that.
being a woman or man.. THAT CHILD IS MADE BY BOTH parents, that responsibility is those adults to raise that child or if can’t find someone that can.. TO KILL AN UNBORN is murder… THAT is for those men who shove money to women and tell them to get “RID” of it. And to the women who decide to do just that.

          • Robyn Kern

The lady in the article got “rid” of a fetus that was not going ot live anyway, it had no brain! Dimwit!

          • Glenna Jones-Kachtik

kindatheart – you are kind to unborn babies – mothers & women not so much. You are all for pro-birth – how are you with those precious little lives after they pass the birth canal? It is so not kind to make decisions for the outcomes of precious cargo that doesn’t affect you at all. Not nice of you to decide that some woman needs to carry that fetus to term – even if it is brain dead. Even if it threatens her life. Even if she is brain dead? Who are you to tell women whom you don’t know that they MUST carry a fetus to term? To abort or not to abort really has little or nothing to do with being a Christian – that is just something some Christians say in order to believe that they have the right to make a decision for someone they don’t know. In reality these people are just busybodies. We have laws that are supposed to protect human beings no matter if they are religious or not. I consider the life of a child already born more important than a life that may or may not be born – you evidently expect all life to stand in thrall of the maybe born. You know what? Abortion is there for a reason – it is on the books for women who want one (& needing one can be for many reasons). The law does not say MUST HAVE AN ABORTION it says IT IS YOUR CHOICE – there if you need it only. So it is simple – if you want one & you have weighed the pros & cons fine get it….if you are against abortion – fine – you don’t have to have one. Your fetus – your choice…Not your womb? Not your decision. When I was growing up in the 50s fertility was not so easy & lots of people made the choice to adopt – but this isn’t the case any longer. Americans find it much easier to adopt overseas or to circumvent red tape by arranging for a surrogate pregnancy. Even then things go awry. There are millions of children languishing in orphanages or foster care today; so, contrary to your opinion, there are not people lined up around blocks to adopt children. Babies should be born to people who want them, period. You shouldn’t decide what is or isn’t murder. Women are not incubators.

          • http://plumstchili.blogspot.com/ Plum Dumpling

You want murderers forced to raise children? Not one of you FetusFetishlists are sane. Not one.
You do not even know what you are saying, most of you. You just say this crap you heard in a church basement somewhere.

          • Michael Russo

You and other right-wingers like you have this vision of the type of people who would seek an abortion that is about as true to life as your image of rapists. Rapists are very rarely “Strange men who jump out of dark corners and rape women.” Rapists are mostly (about 80% of the time) relatives or someone the victim trusted: Brothers, fathers, cousins, uncles, family friends, teachers, etc.

Equally inane is your stance with regard to abortions. Any woman from ANY PLACE IN SOCIETY may find themselves turning to this need for any reason.

And even if the situation you describe was what happened when a woman sought an abortion, every single time…SO WHAT? That is none of your business, and leave your dirty, disgusting paws out of other people’s lives in which you have no right to meddle.

I once had a Catholic uncle who told me abortion should be totally illegal because these women decided they’d rather buy a 50,000 dollar Lexus than raise a child. Needless to say I don’t speak to him anymore. In what world do you people live in that you think it makes sense that most people who seek abortions are vain, financially well-established liberal city dwellers who would rather buy a 50,000 dollar car than raise the baby that they made by accidents via their harlotry? A 50,000 dollar car? The evidence of what people now make in this country would suggest far more concretely that most people who might seek funding for an abortion, for whatever reason, would probably struggle to pay the mortgage on a 50,000 dollar house, because AS ANY STATISTICIAN CAN POINT OUT, there are far more poor people than wealthy people

Given that wealthy people are set up in a much better position to take on the financial burden of a child than poor people, I would imagine that more poor people than wealthy people would be backed into a corner and consider aborting a child they cannot care for.

What you crazy people need to do is pray to your obscene deity that you never need an abortion, be happy that/if you are wealthy enough and in a position to start or continue a family. As a second step, recognize not everyone is as fortunate as you may (or may not, imho) be, and leave them be to make very painful decisions about their and their children’s futures.

Personally, I think your tyrannical way of living and forcing your views upon others is a terrible environment to raise children, and if I were in a position of power to do so, I’d ban all of you from reproducing or recruiting, and take your children from you, so as to not pass on your hatred to future Americans. Lucky for you, I am in no such position of power.

      • texasaggie

And they have rights under “christian” fascism law?

      • Nicko Thime

It only looks different if you are christian.
To the rest of us, it is all the same religious insanity, only christianity is worse as it has sabotaged liberty here and continues to do so daily.

    • David

Only women being persecuted in this country are the ones being harrassed and assaulted by the Democrats like Bill Clinton.

      • terafied

Oh for fuck’s sake, the ’90s called and wants their tired memes back.

      • Nicko Thime

That is what is known as a talking point. Good luck trying to sell it.
It’s an example of why stupid can’t be fixed.
When you wingnuts tried to vilify Clinton over Monica in the 90’s, you turned him into the world’s most popular politician.
Are you sure you want to go down that road again?

        • David

A talking point that is fact.

          • MillRun

a talking point that is abject stupidity. fixed it for you.

          • Rita M Nicholson

No, a talking point is not always a “fact.” Most of the time, they are deceptions appearing to be “facts.” If one has to state “talking points,” then one can’t think for themselves to come up with something more original than what some faux news person has to present. It usually means that this individual has done no research about an issue and is just following along. If one wants “facts” one must do their own research on both sides of the issue.

And, quite frankly, I don’t care who Monica gave a “blow job” to even if it was the President. That is between the Clintons. It is time to move on from the “blow job” issue. Or, perhaps we should talk about diaper man, David Vitter.

          • David

Sorry Champ, but Monica isn’t the only one Clinton messed around with. In fact, he was investigated for rape several times. Maybe you should try getting your news from a legit source instead of a far left site?

          • Rita M Nicholson

I already know about that, but an investigation is different from charges. When were the charges made?

          • terafied

You weren’t even alive then, junior.

          • David

Actually I was, and Clinton was a disgrace to this country. Just like Obama is.

          • RJ

Clinton didn’t disgrace the country it what the Republican House lead By Newt who was having his own affair while trying to impeach Pres. Clinton and took his down himself. HYPOCRISY at its finest…Try someone for adultery, while you are committing it yourself…

          • guitargodkc

If Clinton had done such bad things, then why was he bit convicted by the Senate? The house led by Newt was basically the grand jury and the Senate judge and jury, but nothing came of it but false talking points.

          • Michael Russo

Legit news source? Like what Fox?!?!? Did you know Newt Gingrich was working on his third mistress at the time he spear-headed the impeachment procedures?

          • Michael Russo

Why can’t we flag for ignorance? /wrists

          • Nicko Thime

            Can’t fix stupid.

          • Asher B. Garber

It cost about $1 billion to investigate that blowjob.

            Fact.

          • David

Even less than one of Obama’s vacations!

          • Michael Russo

Typically presidential vacations are in fact expensive, and for many reasons. I’m glad you decided to point this out, let me explain to you why.

Presidents and their families can not just stay anywhere. Secret service has lots of strict requirements about protecting the president and his family, and accommodations have to be made for the agents. Think of every time you went downtown for the evening, and you needed a place to stay, you would have no choice but the stay at the Ritz-Carlton, with how much is required to guarantee the president’s safety.

ALL OF WHICH IS PAID BY THE PRESIDENT’S SALARY, not out of some funding approved by the senate, or some secret fund you ignorant people imagine is out there for presidents to pillage from.

Presidential Historian’s refer to the first time a president receives a bill for the protective services required by Secret Service by a name similar to Bill Shock. I can’t remember the term they call it, but read a Presidential Biographer, or listen to an NPR interview. That’s where I learned about it.

          • Lisa Jennings

            LOL!

          • Nicko Thime

So it is true. Stupid can’t be fixed.

          • Michael Russo

Nope. Not fact at all. We’re sorry your call can not be completed as dialed. Please try again later. Goodbye!

      • Rita M Nicholson

Let’s talk about cheating facts of men on the Republican side: David Vitter, Henry Hyde, George Bush, John Lnnder, William Cohen, Rush Limbaugh, Ronald Reagan, John Warner, Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole, Marv Albert. The list goes on, but I don’t have time for this.

        • David

George Bush and Ronald Reagan cheated? Any other make believe “facts” you want to post?

          • Rita M Nicholson

Yes, Ronald Reagan cheated on Jane Wyman and left her for Nancy. George Bush cheated with Jennifer Fitzgerald. Whether Democrat or Republican, when it comes to cheating and illicit sexual acts, there is plenty of blame to go around. Now that you have taken us off topic from this article above, goodbye.

        • usakindatheart

yes reagan cheated on his first wife. I like alot of what reagan had done, but I do not like his free trade agreement that allowed foreign goods come here so cheap that american lost their jobs and manufacturers left to go to other countries so they could have kids make their products and send them back to the u.s.a. under an american lable. I also do not like how reagan closed down across the country the mental hospitals that helped people and their families with the mentally ill. Now they are on the streets in every town, or sleeping under bridges. I also do not like that reagan allowed all of the first political vote to allow illegal mexicans to become citizens WITHOUT the usual wait time and back ground checks that they made our past immigrants go through to make sure these were good hard working people that had educated and no illegal background or diseases that would put them straight on disability or SSI. Besides these, reagan did good

      • FelixDiaz

        Read the article A-hole

      • Rollins Warden

What does Billy’s wandering willy have to do with texas abortion law?

        • David

The article and comments on here say Texas is attacking women’s rights. The Conservative “War on Women”…….

          • Rollins Warden

Still not getting what Bill’s affair has to do with it. Men can be pigs sure, but that happens on both sides of the coin, or was the Republican family man Rush Limbaugh who had remarried 2 times, and had affairs throughout his marriages slipping your mind? Or how about
Democrats do rightly accuse Republicans of having a war on women, or at least on the right of choice, this is because Republicans pass laws to make it difficult for women to get abortions, you know like mandatory vaginal ultrasounds, or forcing clinics to have a doctor with local hospital accredation, many of which won’t give it because in smaller communities the only hospital is run by a religous group.
Now I understand Republicans position, but their morality is screwed up, legislating christian morality is inherently wrong, rthe United States is a secular nation, what Republicans are trying to do is akin to advocating a change in our government to a Theocracy.
The correct way to prevent abortions is to strengthen the economy, rasie the minimum wage, teach thourough sex education (not absitnance), and make contraceptives freely available to women past puberty.
The incorrect way is to legislate it out of communities and foce women to go to “back alley” doctors to get the procedure done.

          • Palesa Floret

And isn’t it ironic that the same party that fought for the rights of women and minorities Is now the party that is against these same people?

          • DavidD

            Ignore this troll.
He just wants to divert the topic because he cannot defend the indefensible.
His worldview has led to this family’s suffering so he doesn’t want to go there.

          • David

Sorry Champ, but the only people suffering at the aborted babies who had no choice.

          • http://plumstchili.blogspot.com/ Plum Dumpling

I had a miscarriage into the toilet at ten weeks. I poked around in the goo. Nothing recognizably human was there. Clots.

The idea that 2 ounces of primordial goo is capable of thinking, deliberating and then choosing is beyond ludicrous. This is a delusion.

This person, David, capable of this level of delusional thinking, feels entitled to be in charge of my body, my family and my fertility. Expects to be seen as moral and caring. And plans to gain such authority over me by force because of its superior character. This is another delusion.

The Republican Party and the Tea Party are leading these delusional zealots around by the nose. Whatever you may personally feel about abortion, do you want a delusional personality like this one IN CHARGE OF your Sister, Mother, Daughter?

          • David

My sister, mother or daughter would never consider an abortion because they realize it is a heinous act of murder.

      • Glenna Jones-Kachtik

That is one of the most stupid statements I have ever read. There are plenty of Republicans who are doing the same thing Clinton did. At least Clinton never said “Women can’t get pregnant from rape – a woman’s body has a way of shutting that thing down”. It was a Republican woman who said that a woman should continue to carry a fetus because it was evidence when she was raped & that rape kits prevented pregnancy. It was Republican men who compared a woman to livestock….The one major difference is Democratic men don’t tend to wax about failing God & they usually don’t say the devil made them do it. They may say I was stupid & I want to apologize to my wife & hope she forgives me.
I am sorry. To me an affair is NOT an impeachable offense. It is personal. It is private. It should be between the man & wife & their creator (if they believe in one). It is not just for Democrats – How about that Mark Sandfeur? As a Governor he took 2 weeks off & no one knew where he was – not even his Lt Gov knew where or how to get in touch with him. He said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail but in reality he was in Argentina (at taxpayer expense) with his MISTRESS. His wife divorced him. He manages to ignore a restraining order & was kicked out of the Governor’s mansion…but his fellow Republicans just elected him to the Senate….so don’t talk to me about “family values” & how evil Clinton was/is.

      • http://plumstchili.blogspot.com/ Plum Dumpling

‘But still, cash was a problem. Her husband had to take time off work to drive to Arkansas, and they would have to borrow money to fix their car, which wasn’t fit for the long journey. They needed money for gas and accommodations as well as for the procedure itself.’

I’m sorry WHY were you having a child when you CLEARLY couldn’t afford one? Were we taxpayers supposed to support your baby-making habit for the next 18 years? I remember my prenatal care costing thousands even though we have good insurance. Who was paying for this care? Who was going to pay for the hospital bill?

I think the bigger issue of this story is not that the woman couldn’t get an abortion on demand, it’s that she clearly thought nothing of GETTING PREGNANT IN THE FIRST PLACE WHEN IT WAS SO OBVIOUSLY THE WRONG DECISION.

    • drurichman

Maybe his condom broke. Maybe she took her pill 4 hours late. Maybe she’s got no rhythm. Unless you’re one of the silly ones who advocate the ‘quarter method’ of birth control and no intimacy in marriage, STFU!

      • Hard6

It says clearly in the article that they were hoping to have a baby and feared she was infertile. This wasn’t an accident. These people were actively hoping to get pregnant. Or don’t you read?

Maybe they had some sort of a financial windfall coming in the future. Why is this your business?

Yes – because only irresponsible jerks ever accidentally get preggers without intending to.

    • not_Bridget

This woman was thrilled at finding herself pregnant. She & her husband would have have been able to make room in their lives for a child. But this fetus had a condition that meant any child would have had a short & painful life.

Did you actually read the article?

  • nvrbl

I can’t imagine why the maternal mortality rate in Texas has QUADRUPLED in the last 15 years.

      Just wait.

    • David

      • Shan

It’s not made up. You can look up the statistics on the Texas Department of State Health Services website.

        • David

From 1970 to 2005, maternal deaths have gone from 70 down to 60. See, I can cheery pick numbers too!

          • Shan

Why would you want to do that?

          • terafied

You are the cheery picker, alright! (wtf?)

      • Laurie C

No David it’s whack jobs like you who like to make up numbers and stories to frighten people.

        • David

          Typical liberal, can’t accept facts.

  • Kathy S.

A friend of mine got the same devastating news, oh how she wanted that baby. She hoped for a miracle, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. She carried the baby for as long as nature allowed (8 months). The child was stillborn. They named him Christopher. They got to see & hold him. They grieved for their child. They buried their child recognizing the need for their other children, family & friends to grieve also. But unlike this woman whose heart, mind & soul felt empty, they were at peace.

    • MassNative

That was your friend’s personal decision. And that is as it should be, a personal decision. It’s not for you or me to decide.

    • Sally Ohlin

I doubt peace is the description of the emotions after losing a child. Magical thinking on your part.

    • Pelagius

That’s great that they got to hold a dead baby. That’s just not what a lot of people want to do. Just because it worked for your friends doesn’t mean it ought to be forced on anyone else.

    • Nadia

According to the article, if the baby were born alive, it would suffer seizures every day until it died. The mother didn’t want to inflict further pain on the infant. That’s certainly her choice.

      • PostingID2014

The selfishness of the type of person described above is beyond comprehension – making a fetus suffer and – if it had lived – making the actual child suffer so they could touch and feel and “feel holy and whole”.

        Sick puppies.

    • terafied

A friend of mine was prevented from aborting under similar circumstances, and is haunted day and night over the memory of watching her newborn suffer an agonizing death by suffocation.

    • PostingID2014

      What a GREAT friend.

      She’s so holy.

She caused that diseased fetus to suffer as long as she could force it to so she could selfishly say “Look how holy I am.”

  • drurichman

As odd as it may be, abortions are legal in this country. It is settled law. Or at least it was before certain party members decided that Constitutional secular law needed a bit of refreshment with Christian canon (much to the detriment of both Christians and non-CHristians alike).

    • Hard6

You say “settled” law as though we don’t change them. And often.

      • Orly MacGregor

Uh. look up “legal precedent”. Laws aren’t overturned very often. Even a conservative supreme court won’t likely overturn Roe v Wade.

        • Mackinz

Even with Scalia (put on the bench by Reagan to overturn Roe v. Wade) and his lapdog Thomas on the bench, as well as those other two ultra-conservative nutjobs?

          • terafied

            Nope, not even them.

          • Mackinz

I’ve my doubts, especially considering how biased the ultra-conservatives are towards advancing ultra-conservative ideology through overturning precedent when the chance arises, but I’ll not debate it.

          • DavidD

They won’t live forever and the possibility of a GOP president don’t look good now.

  • Geraldine Peterson

When all politicians become OB/GYN physicians, then they can legislate this type of person infringement on a woman’s right to choose. Till then, they should concern themselves with getting this economy back on track, quite playing politics with people’s lives, and getting jobs for their constituents. If they can’t do that, then they should find another profession like at a zoo cleaning up after the animals. Politicians have no right to making decisions about a woman’s body: If they don’t like abortions, then shouldn’t have one…. But then again, those “male” politicians that are passing such despicable legislation are the ones that will never have to make that choice physically with their bodies. How ironic, cruel, and pathetic.

    • Chase

The governments job is to prosecute and protect. In your mind, who is protecting the children in the womb? Pro-Choicers have hundreds and thousands of advocates lobbying for them and their need to feel some sort of control. The unborn child needs someone to fight for them and their right – how can you not see that?

      • Nadia

In your mind, how is birthing unwanted children who then go to foster homes or who are abused by their biological parents “protecting the children”? How many children have you adopted? Do you support free childcare up to the age of five? How about free pre-school? Do you support sick days for parents who work so they can take care of their kids? Our society has a long way to go before we’re child-friendly.

        • Chase

so you’re saying the answer is just kill the children. How about stop having unprotected sex. If you can’t care for a child, DONT GET PREGNANT. What the hell is wrong with you people. You make decisions and then want everyone else to suffer the consequences. You make choices to get pregnant (rape aside – I understand that is different) but then want to find the easy way out. Abortion is NOT the answer. good, responsible choices, and hard work is the answer.

I’ve adopted 3 kids whose parents didn’t want them – from foster care. And as sad as I am that those kids have had to deal with that pain, I’m grateful their birth mothers had the courage to life.

Get off your high horse and being advocated for smart decisions and taking responsibility instead of continuing the “easiest way out” attitude this country has adopted.

          • not_Bridget

Did you actually read this article? Please, offer a link to your website so we can verify your lovely story…

          • Nadia

Actually, then how about being an advocate for contraception – something that a lot of these clinics that are being shut down by anti-choice forces are the only source of for many rural women.

I too am an adoptive parent. As an adoptive parent you probably know of many adopted and foster kids whose mothers drank and did drugs during pregnancy and as a result have major behavioral issues. Perhaps instead of ranting here, you might want to talk to your representatives about providing more support for these kids. It’s been my experience that conservatives are typically anti-sex ed, anti-contraception and anti-family when you get down to the nuts and bolts of where the money’s going.

          • terafied

            Fetuses aren’t children.

          • terafied

Oh, and thanks for admitting you view children as punishments.

      • TMBatKK

It’s a fetus until it can sustain life on it’s own. Stop trying to play the “tender heart card”. It isn’t working. How can YOU not see THAT?

So, let me ask you, Chase… how many kids have you fostered or adopted from homes where they are not wanted or are abused? I had 17 kids through my home in 3 years, and I have adopted one of them. While you are busy fighting for these “unborn children”, as you call them, why don’t you give a rats rear about them when they are out of the womb?

        Simple enough fact: YOU DON’T.

Sit down, shut up and keep your genital laws to yourself and stop imposing them on anyone else. It’s, quite frankly, NONE of your business.

        • Chase

I can’t help but laugh at you – you see, it isn’t just the unborn I love. My wife and I too have fostered. Not as many as you, 12 in 4 years, and we’ve adopted 3 of those 12. So you saying I don’t care is laughable.

Now to the real issue. At what point does a fetus get rights as a human. If you say anything other than at birth, you’re a complete hypocite and your views are pointless – and heres the kicker, you know it. Even at birth a baby can’t “sustain life on it’s own.” It can’t even feed itself. That is the dumbest arguement someone can use. If that is the standard you set for being worthy of human rights any child under 7(ish) should be able to be aborted at the drop of a hat.

Babies brains begin developing very early in pregnancy, body parts are forming. It is a child and deserves rights.

          It is my business -

          • TMBatKK

I didn’t read past your first couple of lines, you are not a person worthy of my time beyond this. Of course you can’t help but laugh at me: Because you are just showing you “good old christian” (SMALL c, CUPCAKE!) values. And of COURSE you suddenly are a foster parents. Whatever. Go dry up. When your generation dies off – and it can’t be too soon! – this world will be a much better place, with all your so called “values” gone. Just shut up. No one really wants to hear your garbage except those VERY VERY FEW that have your same lack of care, compassion and love. Your generation makes me sick.

          • terafied

“Now to the real issue. At what point does a fetus get rights as a human.”

When it’s no longer sponging off the bodily resources of an actual human.

          • maz

if you pull a zygote or fetus out of the womb and clean off all the gunk, it will die because it hasn’t formed enough organs and body parts to function. sorry to shock you but most abortions performed (and you can easily find this information everywhere) happen before your super specific time frame of “very early pregnancy” where *you* seem to define them as alive
if you pull a baby out of the womb, clean out all of the gunk, it will breathe, it’s heart will beat, it will have senses and can function. it’s alive.

it is beyond stupid to tell someone they’re dumb for trying to argue when something becomes life with these simple facts – but then says it magically happens when a sperm punches thru an egg wall. sure it does… this is why my birthday is 9 months earlier from when I left the womb, yeah?

          • Expatmom

Chase, you need to realize that women do not approach abortion as a trivial thing. Great thought & soul searching goes into it. It is never easy. It is the woman that will make the best choice. Not the politicians, not the churches.THE WOMAN. You need to trust women & stop acting like you know everything. You don’t. You come across as a pompous jackass. Abortion is a complex issue & is extremely personal. Please, stop beating your chest like a one dimensional cartoon character. Abortion did not begin with Roe vs Wade. Women stopped dying when Roe vs Wade became the law of the land.

        • Expatmom

Well said, TMB. As a former foster child, let me say thank you for opening your home to so many children in need. Chase doesn’t have the intelligence or soul to understand that if he is not part of the solution, he is part of the problem.

          Again, thank you!

          • TMBatKK

We will ALWAYS fight for the living, breathing, self sustaining humans that can’t fight for themselves. It is what we do as a family. It is my pleasure. And I know that my children will continue that tradition rather than continuing to breed into an all ready over populated world.

        • ZiggyDogg

“It’s a fetus until it can sustain life on its own.” It’s a spot until it becomes melanoma. Don’t be misled by the microscope as I’m not comparing cell structures. I am comparing thought processes and how we grapple with what those cells mean in situations of uncertainty. Pre-cancer for instance, carries great significance, so much so we treat it as cancer even though it’s not. So powerful is its meaning that some people are now attempting to thwart its potential with radical surgery decided by genetic inclination (which is not even pre-cancer, nor is it a guarantee you will get it). Meanwhile, you argue pre-child cells carry no weight, no significance, no meaning or potential because it’s a fetus? Doesn’t this strike you as odd? Further, it is estimated there are 163 million missing women worldwide thanks to gender selective abortion (See WSJ article; The War on Girls). Don’t think this could ever happen here? What makes you think it’s not? It’s nonsense to declare this is NONE of our business when in fact, it’s EVERYBODY’S.

      • Nico

If people are so concerned about abortions they should be pushing contraceptives! Any woman can go down to planned parenthood and get herself a handful of condoms and the birth control of her choice, if we pushed education on this issue abortions would become rare, and probably mainly for health reasons rather than for people who got pregnant by accident. But, yea, sure, instead of helping people make educated decisions, lets just force people to keep children they can’t afford and won’t raise properly.

        • kissyface

most planned parenthoods in Texas have been shut down due to defunding.

      • Rollins Warden

        Dear Chase,
Making something like abortion illegal doesn’t stop abortions, it simply drives them into the black market. Just as making Alcohol illegal didn’t stop people from drinking, outlawing abortion will not stop them from occurring.
The right way to stop abortions is to convince people not to have them, not outlaw them.
If you want to reduce abortions, here are some tips, increase the minimum wage, improve the economy, and make children less expensive, educate kids with real sex ed (not abstinance), give out condoms and birth control to teens who request it.
Personally I find Abortion morally repugnant, I will stand up for the right to choose, Religious freedom is what this country is all about, when you advocate legislating your christian morals, you become an advocate for the United States to become a theocracy, you know like Iran, and you become an enemy of freedom lovers everywhere.

    • Expatmom

Zoo keeping is hard work, involves thinking skills, a big heart, a strong back, a willingness to put oneself on the line. Animals can read people & know right away, who are stupid or bad–and they watch…and wait.

  • BartDePalma

Abortion should be permitted when the child will cause the mother substantial bodily injury or death or when the child cannot survive after birth.

That would be simple amendment to the current Texas law which would receive bipartisan support, including from most of the pro life community.

    • terafied

Abortion should be permitted whenever a woman doesn’t want to be pregnant, for whatever reason.

    • waltzedout

That exception is already in the law, but according to this article, a lot of physicians don’t know about it.

    • getoffmylawn

I’ve got a better idea…why don’t we follow the Constitution and allow the mother, her family, and her doctor decide what to do? All old, white, overweight male politicians should butt out.

  • john west

the GOP in texas is what is driving women to extremes.

  • Kathryn Ranieri

This case is only the tip of the iceberg. Wait till you start seeing women in the morgues because of illegally obtained abortions. Face the fact that Texas legislature is full of misogynistic men and women. Abortion should be legal, safe and accessible. Period.

    • Expatmom

I think we should find the pictures of women who died from illegal, unsafe abortions. These pictures will show the horror of how things were before Roe v Wade!

      • Kathi J

Google Gerri Santoro – Wikipedia has a picture, she has haunted me for more than 40 years now.

      • Kathryn Ranieri

Women who died from bleeding to death, infection, air or blood clots, cardia arrest. And let’s not forget those who were left behind–like all those motherless children.

      • usakindatheart

REALLY? HEY I GOT A BETTER IDEA< WHY NOT PUT ALL THOSE RIPPED OUT BABY PARTS AND GET A PICTURE OF THEM!

        • kissyface

i have had several miscarriages and at 3 months the fetus was about the size of a raisin. 70% of abortions are done in the first trimester so those fetuses are at most raisin size and no parts are ripped off it.

    • usakindatheart

abortion is murder. and all texas has done is make it where women have to take a time out and PAUSE to truly think what they are doing… SO MANY WOMEN HAVE TREMENDOUS GUILT after they murder their child. THEY DO NOT come out and talk about it, because they feel TRUE SHAME. THEY literally have to go through the grief process to be able to process the reality that they killed their unborn. ITS VERY PAINFUL for them… TEXAS is trying to allow these women, who believe they are under extreme stress and “can’t handle it”. SO TEXAS allows for them to get “COUNSELING”, to understand what they are doing, and the FUTURE emotional trauma they will experience. THEY GIVE them other resources to look into, like adoption. ITS just a PAUSE.. it won’t stop a woman who is determined to kill their child.. but at least TEXAS IS TRYING TO HELP THESE WOMEN. unlike alot of blue states.. WHERE ABORTION CLINICS ARE EQUAL TO FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS…

      • Kathryn Ranieri

        abortion
        is murder.

        Murder
is a legal term and not some hysterical concept that plebians such as yourself
        can throw around

        and
all texas has done is make it where women have to take a time out and PAUSE to
truly think what they are doing…

        It’s
not “Texas” doing stuff. It’s a minority of misogynistic men and women breaking
the spirit of the constitution on women’s backs

        SO
MANY WOMEN HAVE TREMENDOUS GUILT after they murder their child. THEY DO NOT
come out and talk about it, because they feel TRUE SHAME. THEY literally have
to go through the grief process to be able to process the reality that they
killed their unborn. ITS VERY PAINFUL for them…

        Spoken
like a true convert. Please know that 1 out of 3 women under the age of 45 will
have abortions and they do NOT regret.

        TEXAS
is trying to allow these women, who believe they are under extreme stress and
        “can’t handle it”.

        Don’t
speak for Texas. Speak for yourself. You are clearly representing your own
        ideas. Get real.

        SO
TEXAS allows for them to get “COUNSELING”, to understand what they
are doing, and the FUTURE emotional trauma they will experience.

        “ALLOWS”???
No. Mandates women and their bodies. Again, get real.

        THEY
GIVE them other resources to look into, like adoption.

        Again,
get real. Women know their own lives better than some smarmy legislator or
        commenter.

        ITS
just a PAUSE.. it won’t stop a woman who is deter mined to kill their child..

        Not
a child but a potential. Stop the eternal exaggeration.

        but
at least TEXAS IS TRYING TO HELP THESE WOMEN.

        NOT.

unlike alot of blue states.. WHERE ABORTION
CLINICS ARE EQUAL TO FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS…

        So
superficial. So ignorant. And such a disgrace to the sacredness of women. Shame
        on you.

  • xyeke

FORCED TO EXTREMES ?? LIKE WHAT NOT MURDERING THE YET TO BE BORN???

    • ‘Fugahlee Jenkins’

You can’t murder something that is already dead. The article clearly states the child would not survive outside the womb and was brain dead.

      • David

Apparently you can’t read because it did not say that.

        • terafied

“Instead they learned that their miracle child had a brain defect so
severe that the doctor described it as incompatible with life.”

Jesus Christ, learn to fucking READ.

          • David

            Obviously you can’t read either.

“The baby would most likely be stillborn and if it survived birth, would suffer seizures every day of its short life.”

          • leftynyc

How very “Christian” of you to want that child to be either born dead or suffer seizures every single day. You are beneath contempt.

          • David

The Christian thing to do is to allow God to decide what happens to that child. So don’t try to go play the “Christian” card when you are obviously a liberal idiot that knows nothing about the Bible.

          • gingerland62

            God did make the decision.

          • David

Correct, and God chose for that child to have a birth defect.

          • terafied

See why we think your “god” is an evil ba$tard?

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

God didn’t choose for that child to be sick. Would you please stop insulting God and saying this crap?

          • not_Bridget

What does the Bible have to say about abortion. Chapter & verse, please!

          • David

The Bible doesn’t address abortion because no one at that time considered such a heinous act.

          • terafied

LOL! Women have been aborting since the beginning of time.

          • David

Thanks for the link supporting your ignorance.

          • terafied

Truly, junior, you are a hoot and a half. What are you .. about 15 years old?

          • DavidD

A habitual reactionary troll like bimbo1 or maybe a sock puppet of his.He hangs around here being a sociopathic ass .

          • terafied

You know what’s sociopathic? Intruding on the private medical decisions of women.

          • DavidD

I’ll march under that banner.I agree with you 100%.

          • DavidD

Actually it was a very common act by bronze age people with limited resources like the early Hebrews.A child was not even a person on until some days after birth and under extreme circumstances infanticide was practiced.

          • DavidD

Nomadic bronze age pastoralist didn’t even name new borns until well after birth.Abortion was practised by the Hebrews

          • terafied

Fabulous. So what if we’re not Christians.

          • David

Then go ahead and abort all you want. And enjoy hell.

          • leftynyc

LOL – I’m not a Christian. And if you think you’re a good representative of Christian, I’m extremely thankful I’m not one. Also, only Christians think the New Testament is the bible. The Chosen know better.

          • David

Thanks for proving you know nothing about the Bible. There isn’t a single Christian with a Bible that doesn’t include the Old Testament. Moron.

          • leftynyc

You really are a moron. The Old Testament is the ONLY Bible. The New Testament has nothing to do with the bible. It’s a fantasy.

          • David

One day we’ll find out who is right. Wouldn’t want to be you.

          • leftynyc

Yawn – we’ll chat when your religion has been around as long as mine has. And with much fewer numbers and in spite of so many trying to kill us (including many “Christians”). I already know I’m right.

          • David

I’ll assume you are Jewish then. Why don’t you look up the fact that the sacrifices made at the Temple for the 40 years after Jesus died were rejected by God?

          • leftynyc

LOL – you will never understand Judaism. Don’t even try. You want to believe in a fantasy, knock yourself out. Just don’t try and cram your ridiculous beliefs down my throat and expect me to adhere to your taboos.

          • David

There are 3 signs that need to appear to show the God accepted the sacrifice each year. All three signs were negative. Congrats on rejecting the Christ.

          • leftynyc

Of course I reject the Christ. I’m not a Christian. You believe in a fantasy.

          • David

Why don’t you go read the Talmud. In it you’ll find evidence of Christ and proof that God rejected the sacrifice each year for 40 years until the temple was destroyed.

          • leftynyc

Because the Talmud was written by men – the Torah was written by G-d. I have no interest in what mere mortals have to say about religion. But I can guarantee there is no PROOF of Jesus Christ in either one.

          • David

But as a “devout” Jew I’m sure you are aware of the 3 symbols showing God rejected the sacrifices on Yom Kippur. Or is a Christian more informed on your religion than a Jew? Do you deny that the stone lot that was cast did not result in the selection of the black stone for 40 years? Do you deny that the red strip attached to the goat remained red for 40 years representing God not forgiving the sins of the Jews? Do you deny that the Temple doors didn’t swing open every night for 40 years, signifying impending doom? Do you also deny that the Temple menorah went out every night for 40 years? The odds of all these events happening are astronomical. Don’t you think there is some significance that they just seemed to happen after Jesus died and until the Temple was destroyed?

          • leftynyc

Do YOU not understand that anything written after the end of of the Torah is man made nonsense?

          • David

Sooooo, history books are all fake and you don’t believe any of them? And you do realize God didn’t actually write the Old Testament, right? It was man writing the words of God. Which is no different than the New Testament.

          • leftynyc

So that’s your position? That the New Testament is a history book? Well, on that we agree. It’s merely men writing about what they claim to have experienced – not divinely inspired at all. That’s exactly what separates it from the Bible.

          • David

Wrong moron, the Talmud is a history book. Learn how to read.

          • leftynyc

I see we’ve come to the insult portion of the program. Okay tea tard – where did I ever say the Talmud was anything but a history book? Only the Torah is divinely inspired. The Talmud is merely a “discussion” about the Torah and what you call the New Testament is a fantasy.

          • David

Guess when you die you’ll find out if you were right. Don’t ever say you didn’t have a chance to accept Christ who fulfilled all the prophesies of the Old Testament.

          • leftynyc

Isn’t this where the conversation started? There is no hell for The Chosen. I have no fear of death.

          • David

Jews were the chosen, but they rejected Christ.

          • leftynyc

Because he wasn’t the messiah. How you can look at the planet and see the misery, poverty, starvation and think the messiah has come is completely beyond me. But everyone has the right to believe whatever fantasy they wish. But don’t worry, we don’t wish the fantasy of hell on any of you for being misguided. It seems only Christians desire that for those who disagree.

          • David

So he fulfilled all the Old Testament prophets and then when the Jews rejected him there were numerous signs for 40 years that God did not accept the Jewish sacrifices, yet there’s no chance he could have been the Christ? You’re free to believe whatever you want, but the evidence is right in front of you proving who he was. And there is poverty and misery because of the sin in the world. It was before Christ came and it was after he left. But on the last day when he does return to judge the world, then it will end and those who believed in him will enter heaven.

          • leftynyc

You have a rich fantasy life. So – only those who believe in Jesus Christ enter the kingdom of heaven? Boy are you in for a surprise. You see, in my religion, it’s not what you believe, it’s how you live your life that determines whether you’re worthy of eternal life. You’re not mandated to “believe” anything. The whole “you’re going to hell” nonsense that parents and pastors use to scare their flocks is so far from the message of G-d, it’s amazing you’ve managed to fool so many people for 2000 years. Meanwhile, like I said, when your religion has been around as long as mine, maybe you’ll have a clue.

          • David

So the Bible doesn’t speak about hell?

          • leftynyc

The closest we come is a place called Gehanna – I guess it’s like purgatory. Only it’s never for longer than a year and you still get the Sabbath off. Then G-d decides whether your soul deserves eternal life. Our religion is also different in that no one person is closer to G-d than any other – we don’t have “leaders of the synagogue”. Everybody gets to interpret the Torah and its lessons the best way they know how. Rabbi simply means teacher (which is what I believe Jesus Christ was).

          • David

I have to admit I feel sorry for you and those who share your religion because you really have no idea if you lived a good enough life to deserve heaven. Jesus took the place of the sins of those who believe in him and that’s a guarantee to eternal life in heaven.

          • leftynyc

That’s a very convenient thing for Christians to believe. That Jesus took the place of all your sins. I think it’s ridiculous but whatever. Jews have 613 rules to follow. G-d knows if we’ve done our best to live our lives accordingly so I don’t need someone who believes in fantasy feeling sorry for me. We have a special place in G-d’s heart – the Torah says so and that’s all I need.

          • David

Well, like I said previously, you’ll find out when you die if you were right or wrong as will I.

          • Sir Loins

There is no God. If there was then no precious blessing miracle child, er fetus, would ever be in the position to be aborted. A perfect God that knows all things, experiences past, present, future (St. Augustine), would not feel moved to do anything, would not judge (human characteristic) because to judge is imperfect. A perfect being, God, would not exist, choosing to exist means there is an alternative and if there is an alternative then the possibility of choosing incorrectly is very real and indicates infallibility which is an imperfection. To exist is to suffer, to feel, etc. No perfect being would suffer or feel or be moved to be loving or vengeful (again, human characteristics). You’re dished dude, and so is your invisible-do-nothing-super-hero. Try Marvel.

          • David

Go ahead and believe that. When you die you will find out if you were right or not.

          • Sir Loins

Pretty sad that that’s all you got. Pretty sad that in your super-hero world you have to die to find out if it was true or not. If I was God, I’d be on TV. There’s another thing: if you can conceive of something better then what exists, or in this case doesn’t exist, isn’t as perfect. So if I can conceive of a better God, Me, then I am potentially better than God, only because I don’t have super-powers but then neither does God, because God doesn’t exist. Suck on that asshole.

          • David

Pretty angry about something that in your mind doesn’t exist. Must really bother you. You get fired up about Bigfoot and unicorns too?

          • Sir Loins

My advice to you is read some books and get your dck wet before it’s too late.

          • terafied

This asswipe will be judged harshly.

          • leftynyc

I’m not a believer in hell. It’s enough to know that G-d will likely decide he’s not worthy of eternal life and will destroy his soul.

          • golfnerd

So you are in favor of making new born babies suffer?

          • David

No, I am in favor of allowing the child to have a chance at life. Who are you to decide what kind of life that child deserves?

          • golfnerd

The mother get to decide based on the best scientific evidence available and that clearly states the bay will suffer every day of it’s short life.

Who are you to wish that on any baby or the mother?

          • David

And the mother gets to rot in hell for that decision.

          • Expatmom

So your god of compassion will condemn a woman for terminating a fetus. Really? Are you sure about that? ‘Cause in the Book of Numbers, it says if a woman is unfaithful to her husband & conceives, she MUST have an abortion! Did you not read that part? The Bible gives no value to an unborn baby. Look it up. And why, oh why, would God create souls for human beings, just to cast them into eternal hell? WHY? By doing that, he/she/it would be showing itself to be a total psychopath! I CREATED YOU. YOU DO AS I SAY OR I WILL TORMENT YOU FOR ETERNITY! A “GOD” like that would be surrendering its power to its creations–just by them saying, “No!” Do you think your God is a psycho?????????????

          • David

Anything else you want to make up about the Bible you’ve never read?

          • TheLump

Then, how about Hosea 13:16 “Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.”

Hosea 9:16 “Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb.”

Genesis 38:24 “Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.”

That’s some pretty harsh bible abortion right there.

          • David

Those are people being killed for their sins and rejection of God. That’s not abortion, but nice try.

          • TheLump

The unborn are being killed for their sins and rejection of God? Was it God who came down and did it? Was it the Christ who came down and did it? No. It was people. Nice try. That’s some interesting dissonance you have there.

          • David

The adults were killed for their sins. Don’t pretend to know something about the Bible when you’ve never read it.

          • TheLump

Sorry, I’ve read the Bible. My first school was in a church. Not church-sponsored, IN a church. “The adults were killed for their sins”, such dissonance. Were the infants dashed to pieces also killed for their sins? You sure do love to try to spin. You have the typical rationalize-anything and rantings of a fanatic.

          • Expatmom

I went to a religious school. I had to pass Bible & I did, with flying colors. I went to church 5 times a week. I was totally immersed. Then, I started to ask questions. Just normal questions. I thought “those that knew” would give me answers. They couldn’t. They didn’t have answers. They had been taught that it was wrong to question. I sought answers. I did research. I learned that religion comes from man & is made in man’s own image. It is a tool of power& abuse. It is to be questioned at every opportunity. Religion is fine when it improves the lives of the needy. It should be blocked when it doesn’t. Having blind faith is begging to be used for all kinds of awful things & committing even more horrible acts. David, it is time for you to start asking the right questions of your faith. Peace.

          • David

I have asked those questions and I was an atheist for a while. But evolutionists couldn’t answer the hard questions so I knew there had to be a higher power. Apparently you asked the wrong people those questions and should find someone smarter.

          • Rollins Warden

            Dear David,
So instead of understanding that in scientific thought the theory of evolution postulated by Charles Darwin, does not have all the answers, and wanting to help find them, you decided you wanted to listen to someone who does have all the ansers, and can spoon feed you fact answers right out of a 2000 year old book, edited by preists and kings oh say about a dozen times?
            That is too much.

          • golfnerd

So now you think your are judge and jury? Who do you think you are? God?

          • David

Not a judge or jury. But God is. You’ll be joining her.

          • golfnerd

But you already passed sentence – on both of us. Getting ahead of yourself or just a swollen head?

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

The mother can repent at any time and go to Heaven, actually. And we’re supposed to telling her God loves her and encouraging her to do so. Fishers of men and all that.

          • Expatmom

The mother & father are the ones to decide. It’s obvious to all of us here that God gave you neither a brain or a heart.

          • Sir Loins

No chance is not a chance moron.

          • not_Bridget

It’s very interesting that most of these “right to lifers” are men. (I added the quotation marks because I doubt these haters defend unnecessary war or the death penalty. And I doubt they want Their Tax Dollars to help those already born to have better lives.)

          • Nadia

I also think it’s telling that they don’t approve of contraception, since better contraception = fewer abortions. It’s all about punishment for sex.

          • Sir Loins

Yes, that dude, and everyone else just like him, is totally in favor of letting living things suffer horribly before dying. In fact, I think it’s some kind of fetish with them. They actually truly love death, but not just death, it has to be the most horrible death imaginable – the kind that would make normal people like you and me gasp.

          • terafied

Yes, this is brain dysfunction, you freakin’ troll.

          • David

You were obviously born with a brain dysfunction, but your mother didn’t abort you.

          • Asher B. Garber

This is what you do all day? And you really want me to think that not only you’re right but that you’ve got the knowledge that nobody else has?

            Wow.

          • David

Apparently I have more knowledge than other posters on here since they can’t even read.

        • ‘Fugahlee Jenkins’

Allow me to quote “The baby would most likely be stillborn and if it survived birth, would
suffer seizures every day of its short life. “If that were me,” Sarah
thought, “I’d rather go to God.” Better? Stillborn means dead no?

          • David

Obviously you can’t read because it’s in English and not ebonics. It doesn’t say it was guaranteed to die. But keep aborting your kids. We don’t need any more pavement apes in this world.

“and if it survived birth, would suffer seizures every day of its short life.”

    • blessed

So many women killing their children. Half of those children would be women themselves if given the chance. Pro lifers give those women rights only to have abortionists take them away because they are inconvenient. If a woman cannot even protect her own baby, she doesnt deserve my sympathy. Botched abortion stories also amaze me. How can I feel sympathy for someone who got hurt while murdering her own child?

      • terafied

Indeed, how can you feel sympathy at ALL?

      • leftynyc

I don’t see anyone asking for your sympathy. Just that you mind your own freeking business and let them decide what’s best for themselves.

      • Sir Loins

What about when someone murders a baby elephant or tiger cub? Are you as outraged at the murder of that life? You do realize that babies aren’t magical and fleeting species different from adults they WILL become. By your logic you should love abortion doctors and pedophiles and people who cause traffic jams just as much as babies since they were once babies. How many unwanted babies have you adopted? You know what’s more repugnant than abortion? People reading cute stories about furry bears and fun dolphins to the very creatures that will eventually help in those creatures’ extinction. You are an idiot.

      • Nadia

Well, little miss perfect, judge not lest ye be judged. How do you know the circumstances? For example, in this case, there was a severe birth defect.

      • Amanda Lynn Larson

What are you doing to help women? Do you fight for affordable daycare? Housing? Do you work with abused children? Do you do anything useful that helps women raise the children you want them to have or are you just condemning them?

If you’re not actually doing something, you don’t care- not enough to have it mean something. If you really care about women and children, you’ll be able to back it up- otherwise, it’s just talk.

Tip: Sex ed and birth control prevent abortion. If you really hate abortion? You’ll support things that prevent it.

      • Expatmom

Blessed–The reality of life is that 47,000 women die EVERY YEAR around the world from unsafe illegal abortion. Does that cause you any concern at all??? These are women who have no options. Their options have all been outlawed. These women are poor. They are mothers who cannot feed the children they already have. They are desperate. There is no access to birth control. Even in famine, intercourse happens. It’s how Mother Nature keeps human beings on the planet. These disparate mothers turn to illegal abortion & they die! They die horrible painful deaths. They leave children behind. Imagine how awful that is. Poverty stricken children who now have no mother. Take a “blessed” minute to ponder what life will be like for those living, breathing children. They are the world’s unwatched little ones. They will be used & abused by every POS that lays eyes on them. Life IS Hell for them & they did nothing wrong. Their mommy got pregnant & abortion wasn’t an option because of people like you & David & terafied. Congrats! You must feel so holy! Yes, yes, in your little world, on your favorite church pew, you think women who get abortions use it as a form of birth control, right? That couldn’t be further from the truth, but let’s just say that it is. Do you really want the drunken barfly to become a MOTHER????? That’s how we get dead toddlers! Congrats, again. Got that warm, holy feeling again?? Do you get that when you read about sexually abused children? Do you? Do you have adopted children in your home? Any foster children there? IF YOU AREN’T PART OF THE SOLUTION, YOU’RE PART OF THE PROBLEM, Blessed. Your “piety” sickens me!

        • Expatmom

I included terafied in error & could not edit it out! My apologies!!!!

          • terafied

            Haha it’s ok. I didn’t even notice :)

    • terafied

No one can stop you from believing that a fetus is a person. But no one can stop me from not believing that and acting accordingly.

      • David

        Enjoy hell!

        • terafied

“Hell” would be having someone like you in my life.

        • leftynyc

My religion doesn’t believe in hell. My religion has a very benevolent G-d. So you can keep your distorted view of religion to yourself.

          • David

Congrats on believing in fairy tales.

          • golfnerd

            Talking to your mirror?

          • David

            Very original! Liberal loser.

          • Richard Williams

Did you enjoy your evening with Bathsheba last night? Since you are discussing murder, how is Uriah getting along these days? Better watch out for Absalom.

          • terafied

This jackwagon is a virgin. Snort.

          • Sir Loins

Oh the irony of that statement dude, you believe in the mother of all fairy tales.

          • leftynyc

LOL – coming from someone who believes in a virgin birth. You’re hilarious.

        • Sir Loins

Sounds fun since that’s where all the badasses went. Too bad it doesn’t exist.

    • not_Bridget

Did you actually read this story?

      • Sydney

        I’m sure he did not.

    • Sir Loins

What about murdering the already born dipsht?

    • Amanda Lynn Larson

Whether you like abortion normally or not, there’s a tiny bit of difference in a mother who is going to have a baby that will suffer hideously and die and her trying to prevent that and having an abortion in general. Show some respect.

    • getoffmylawn

Spare me. This decision should always lie between the mother, her family, and her doctor. Easy. Simple. Straightforward. Constitutional.

  • Patsy Nomore

The fake PRO LIFE folks are MONSTERS..The PRO LIFE MONSTERS demand every fetus be bornso these sadistic MONSTERS can demonize, and starve them once born..
PRO LIFERS say 30,000 annual gun murders are OKAY..PRO LIFERS say the 2 million annual pollution deaths are OKAY…PRO LIFE folks are OKAY with the death penalty.. PRO LIFERS are OKAY with starving your fellow Americans..
NO NO NO..PRO LIFERS make different choices is all.. Their soap box in the sewer doesn`t fly with me..

    • getoffmylawn

They’re not “pro-life”. They’re pro-birth. After the babies are born they couldn’t care less whether they live or die.

  • David

    Liberals should all kill themselves.

    • terafied

      Flagged.

      • David

        Faqqot.

        • terafied

It figures you’re a freakin’ homophobe, too.

    • leftynyc

Your pastor must be so proud.

    • Sir Loins

Spoken like a true representative of the ever-lovin-oven that is the Christian Rightwing.

      • David

If it’s so cool to kill unborn babies, it must be cool to kill yourselves. Have at it!

        • Nadia

You first. Let us know how it goes.

        • Sir Loins

Celebrating and encouraging the deaths of the living while championing the unborn is kind of a contradiction, eh? Do you love pedophiles and murderers? They were once unborn too. Oh right, you freaks don’t give a fck after the birth. It’s weird to be obsessed with fetuses dude. You are weird man. No help for you.

          • David

Well liberals want to kill the innocent unborn, so they deserve to die as well.

          • Sir Loins

I actually feel sorry for you man. You’ve obviously been brainwashed by your religion, by the leaders of your religion. It’s become a learned response. You just spew this nonsense like a reflex, like the results of taking ipecac. Dig? You’re not thinking about the issue, you just repeat what you’ve been told verbatim like some kind of robot. That’s what you are man, a zombified robot, part of the christian zombie army. A shill, a tool. The church makes quite a ton of money off the rank and file of its zombie army. How does that make you feel? Not one ounce of autonomy, or original thought. You’re worse than an aborted fetus dude, you’ve totally wasted your life on a fantasy, a myth, and a cause celebre which turns out to be a cause turd. There are 7 billion people on this planet and not one of them is a blessing or a miracle, not you, not me, not anyone. Object is: make the best of it. Having children believe they are miracles or blessings and the “future” does a real disservice to them. And the results of being high on baby have been disastrous: pollution, species on the verge of extinction, all because of humans. Children aren’t special magical creatures dude. They all grow up into adults, adults just like you unfortunately, just like me. Thing is, being rank and file of the christian zombie army also means nobody will ever get through to you. You’re a failure and you’re going to kick off some day not having done a damn thing worth anything. Good luck to ya bud.

          • David

Ha, only robots that aren’t able to think are you liberals who have to have your lives controlled by the government because you all are so effing stupid.

          • Sir Loins

            Okay man.

          • mattfifth

            Nuh-uh… YOU are!

          • Expatmom

Reading his various postings from today, I’m guessing David had a snow day…

        • Nico

Is this such a touchy subject for you because you were a failed abortion?

          • David

My parents actually wanted me and consider me a great blessing in their lives and the lives of many others. Stop projecting though. It’s ok if daddy never loved you.

          • Sir Loins

You’re not a blessing dude. You are one terribly brainwashed individual who seems to have a hell of a lot of anger, I see dudes with the letters ‘F’ ‘B’ ‘I’ on the backs of windbreakers in your future.

    • Nadia

Perfect example of the “pro-life” mindset.

    • Mark

Jesus hates me, this I know, for his fan club tells me so…

      • David

Jesus does hate you because you support the murder of innocent unborn children.

        • Amanda Lynn Larson

Jesus said to love your enemies. I suggest rereading your Bible. He prayed for those who persecuted them. He told them not to do sin, but he prayed -for- them. He treated them well. Never told them to kill themselves, in fact, he fought to save them.

Jesus talked to the prostitute and the Roman. He would talk to the woman that was thinking of an abortion and he wouldn’t tell her to die.

If you care this much? Go do something that actually prevents abortion. Otherwise it means nothing.

          • David

Jesus said love your enemies, but hate the sin that they commit, such as murdering unborn children. I suggest you try reading the Bible for the first time in your life.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

And please find the verse where Jesus says ‘tell your enemies to kill themselves and be hateful.’ I’d like to see where he added that or where the disciples used that in their preaching to the unconverted. I’ll wait.

          • David

Bible says those who murder should be put to death. Abortion is murder. There you go.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

So you’re following the Old Covenant? Have you had premarital sex? if so, you need to sign up to be stoned. We can do that, but that means all of it- including the parts that effect you, potentially.

          • David

Wrong, the 10 Commandments still stand. And no, I haven’t had pre-marital sex because my fiance and I both follow the Bible and are waiting until we are married. It’s the greatest gift we could give each other.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

10 Commandments don’t say to kill murderers, just to not kill. I’m a Christian and I’ve read my Bible- multiple times.

You can’t justify the way you treat people by the Bible. It’s not Christ-like. It won’t bring them to God or show them salvation. It just shows them that you hate them and they’ll get that from Satan/the world already. It won’t save babies.

Be against abortion- I am. But don’t justify abuse that way. Do see you any of these people walking away going ‘wow, I’m changed?’ No- because it doesn’t work.

          • terafied

Oh for the love of .. SERIOUSLY! I’m being lectured about my social life by a VIRGIN????

          • David

I’d rather be a virgin than have sex with the fat ugly people you’ve been with.

          • terafied

Now I know you’re in high school.

          • Expatmom

David–Now tell us again about all those foster kids & adoptees you have in your home???? And how’s that acne ointment working for you?????

          • David

Ummm, sorry psycho loser, but I don’t have any kids or foster kids. I hope you aborted all your babies so they didn’t have to be raised by someone insane.

          • Nico

AWWWWWWWWW!!! That’s adorable!!!!! Sadly theres a good chance you’ll be a divorce statistic, but hey, maybe you stand a chance, she probably won’t be able to tell how bad it is.

          • David

Actually the divorce stats are in our favor. If you live together before marriage the odds of divorce go way up. Nice try though.

          • Nico

Saying the word statistic doesn’t suddenly make us all believe you. If you want to pretend you have a fact based argument, then provide evidence. I took a minute to find a statistic on the matter and could only find articles from religious sites, no census data.

          • David
          • Sir Loins

Didn’t you mention that the bible says nothing about abortion? So if they bible says nothing on the subject then how do you know what it says?

    • Sydney

      Fake christian here, folks.

      • Expatmom

        No, I’m thinking he’s just a kid.

        • Sydney

          Yes, probably so.

    • Expatmom

I guessing that when you’ve been back ground checked for those adopted & foster kids you have, you don’t let them see this kind of stuff. You lied about that, didn’t you? You’re not fit to be a biological father, much less pass a review to be a foster parent. You are probably a over weight teenager without a clue about life or love or death. Maybe, just maybe, you’ll grow out of this awful thing you are now, but know this–right now, you’re a piece of shit.

  • martykayzee

Yes, pray for the end of abortion. Now do it privately in the sanctity of your own home or church.

  • Amber

I’m glad these stories are getting some attention. I have several friends who have recently had to have abortions. We are all at an age where we are starting families and are facing these issues for the first time. Most women are responsible, use birth control, and are never faced with having an abortion. A silent large number of women have had to terminate wanted pregnancies. Many women only encounter abortion when they are TRYING to get pregnant. And something goes wrong. Something happens to the child they want and already love. It’s devastating. These women are heartbroken. They should be able to get a medical procedure with dignity and compassion by their trusted healthcare provider. My best friend recently had to walk through a crowd screaming “murderer” and other horrible things to her on her way into a clinic. Her child’s heart and brain stopped developing and her baby died inside her. For her own health and safety, the pregnancy needed to end. Her OB was not legally allowed to preform the procedure in her office. We wouldn’t dream of shouting obscenities to someone going into a clinic getting a colonoscopy. Why is it okay for this medical procedure? Before we judge these women and call them horrible names, let’s remember we do not know their stories. We do not know the crushing heartbreak of having a wanted and loved baby die inside of you. Let’s do what we can to prevent unwanted pregnancies and allow other families the privacy, dignity, and compassion to deal with their loss.

  • gingerland62

Pro-life does not mean the life of anyone or anything but a “pre-born”. If you are already born, your life doesn’t matter. This is insanity.

  • AbigailTea

Look at the few anti choice comments on here. You all do a great job showing how extremely arrogant you are. Your inflated false sense of virtue is pathetic. You ignore the story and you ignore the many reasonable cases for Abortion in order to boost your big egos.

I strongly suggest all those who want abortion to end do the following.
End incest and rape. Raise, house, educate, feed, cloth and pay
for collage for those unwanted children. I strongly suggest that all
those woman who are against abortion and have not been raped by a
stranger or family member, beaten by their husbands, boyfriends and so
on, put themselves in the shoes of those who are, and then decide if they’d be
willing to bring their child into the chaos that exists in that world.
I strongly suggest that all those woman and men who want to ban abortion experience having
something done to them against their will. Have someone tell them how
to think, be and exist. I strongly suggest you all think twice about
what you are saying before you take a woman’s freedom away. A freedom
to choose. Something tells me that God did not put incest, rape and
abuse in his/her plan. Something tells me that those who do get
abortions as a form of birth control, or make the mistake of getting
pregnant, where not loved much and may not be educated on birth control. Even if they were,
maybe they asked their partner to pull out and the man didn’t care.

How would a woman know when a man is going to come?

I strongly suggest that you think and know, when a woman goes in for
an abortion, she’s not loving it and that it’s hard to do. However the
alternative is sometimes impossible for a variety of reasons that I’m
sure, a person who wants to end abortion, has not educated themselves
on and nor do they care. Like the man who ejaculates into a woman without protection.
Like the person who protests but is not willing to allow someone to tell them what he/she should do with their own body.

    • terafied

If you think she’s not loving an abortion, watch her in labor.

  • Sir Loins

This fits with the Republican-Jesus-Freak unlogic just fine: aborting a fetus is wrong, all fetuses are life; letting a newborn child brutally suffer and die is A-okay. Thing is the RJFs don’t give a fck about life after fetus, if they did they’d be lining up and forking over the money to take care of every single elderly person since, you know, they’re life and were once little fetuses

  • http://batman-news.com Megan

Making abortion illegal works abous as well as making drugs illegal. Abortions are going to happen, period, law or no law. The issue is not whether abortion is OK or not OK. The only issue is how safe it is to get one: how many women are injured or killed getting one.
Why are “pro-life” people always willing to let women die?

  • David

Seeing the insane comments from liberals on here, I actually support abortion now since you are the only ones hateful enough to kill your own helpless offspring and any parents with so much hate would obviously raise children filled with an equal amount of hate. The fewer liberals on earth, the better.

    • Amanda Lynn Larson

What are you doing to make it possible for women to raise children? Do you fight for affordable housing? Day care? Minimum wage increases?

Have you fought for or again birth control and sex ed- both proven to -prevent and/or lower abortion rates-?

If you’re not on board with actually stopping it, the problem isn’t as much as the evil liberals as much as the people that a) condemn people for it while b) ensuring it will keep happening.

      • David

I’m for personal responsibility, something liberals abhor. And I give very generously to a charity that supports single mothers who are trying to better their lives through continuing education, not just continue to live off the government, also something liberals abhor.

        • Amanda Lynn Larson

I’m pleasantly surprised re: charity. People usually can’t back up their talk that much. Kudos on that and I genuinely mean that.

I’m all for personal responsibility. The thing is that people can do everything right and still not be able to make it. Some poor families have two or three jobs- not everyone that’s poor is on welfare. Not everyone that struggles to afford birth control is ‘living off the state’. You can be married and working hard and still be vulnerable without help- be it birth control or something else.

But I’m also against abortion. So it’s a really easy decision- cheap birth control = easy less abortion. In fact, there’s no decision.

          • David

I am for free birth control and I support using tax dollars for that. However, I am against abortion and the use of it as a form of birth control. Less than 1% of abortions are performed to save the life of the mother. The rest are because the mother wasn’t responsible with her sex choices.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

There’s some other options, that are rare but happen- rape/incest and severely sick babies. Those things need to be separate discussions. The mom above desperately wanted her baby and whether you agree with her choice, she -thought- she was preventing her baby from horrible pain. That was the intent. It matters when we talk about her and her choice.

One of the reasons the abortion rate is high is because many places/people have -fought- birth control and sex ed. They’ve actually fought to limit it and expected people just won’t have sex. Sometimes it’s a choice, but there’s religious communities where a woman is expected to submit when married, domestic violence or other cases when it’s not.

I want to limit abortion too, but the other has got to be a part of that. The new birth control mandate has coincided with (surprise!) a big drop in abortion. It can get better, much better, the more we put those options out there.

          • terafied

Why do you want to limit abortion? I mean, I want to limit shoulder surgeries, I suppose, but it’s really not a public policy issue.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

I don’t like/believe in abortion with a few exceptions (such as the case above). But banning won’t solve it, as people still get them and offer suffer horribly or die. So, I support things like birth control, sex ed, affordable daycare and things that will lower abortion rates while helping women. These have the benefit of being done with the woman’s consent as well.

          • terafied

Oh jesus christ, so you’re the problem.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

You might research abortion access for low income women, if you get time. The Guttmacher Institute has some good articles and research.

          • terafied

Amanda, women don’t need your “help.” They need agency of their bodies.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

What exactly do you think birth control and sex ed do, again? Oh, that’s right! Give woman agency.

Please come back later, when you’re a better caliber of troll, k?

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

And since you seem confused about life in general: /thinkprogress. org / economy/2013/11/04/2882691/childcare-costs-rose/

But women don’t need those things, right?

          • terafied

Stay out of my personal life.

          • Nico

Where did you get that number? Give me a link to the study that came to that statistic. You are claiming that 99% of abortions are being done as a “form of birth control” and I’m calling bullshit. http://www.abort73.com/abortion_facts/us_abortion_statistics/
On average, women give at least 3 reasons for choosing abortion: 3/4 say that having a baby would interfere with work, school or other responsibilities; about 3/4 say they cannot afford a child; and 1/2 say they do not want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner (AGI).
12% Included physical problems with their health among reasons for having an abortion.

          • David

1% of abortions are done to save the life of a mother. FACT.

          • Nico

Do you not see the link I just provided you that shows you’re pulling numbers out of your ass? Just because you throw the word “FACT” at the end of something does not magically make it true.

My godson was conceived despite the use of birth control. Your argument is void.

          • David

Why didn’t you push for them to have an abortion. You could have offered it as a sacrifice to your god Obama!

          • April D. Korbel

He was a complete surprise, but very much wanted. That was the CHOICE they made. Still, the couple really couldn’t afford another child and was trying to be responsible. Stuff happens even to responsible people.

        • terafied

          In other words, nothing.

        • Sir Loins

You give generously? Dude you are on this site posting comment after comment. Generously would mean more than say 100 dollars, eh? If you were giving generously to charity one would assume you have money. If you truly have money you would not be on this site posting idiotic comment after comment. Rich folks are too busy worrying about their sodding private property. You do not have a lot of money. You are an idiot. Ah, the charity myth. Love it. You actually believe charities take in the 100s of millions of dollars to effectively help all the people who need it. Charities are so flush with cash because most CHILDREN (who are the largest recipients of welfare aid I might add) and women would rather suck of the Gov tit?! They aren’t. Total fool.

          • David

Keep dreaming. And keep aborting your kind. The world doesn’t need any more liberals.

          • Nico

I’m seeing a lot of you down the comment line here. I’m starting to get this picture of you as an incredibly repressed 13yo who has been dragged to sunday school and church every week of his life, masturbating furiously to his own righteousness. Jesus doesn’t like that either young man!

          • Expatmom

            Bingo!

          • Expatmom

He’s a kid, home from school. And his allowance wouldn’t go far.

    • Nico

Pro choice people are not pro abortion. Pro choice people think we should be educating people to make good decisions with their sex life instead of creating laws that are going to be broken in dangerous ways. It’s not very dificult to be sexually active without getting pregnant, and if you educated people about birth control and how they can get affordable access to it, abortions would become less and less common. Education is the way to get results, not force. And hey, I don’t like the idea of it (which is why I’m on the pill) but if I got somehow pregnant anyway, I’d get an abortion; we’re overpopulated, children are expensive and neither my boyfriend or myself ever want children. That’s OUR decision.

    • Laura B.

You are a man. YOU get to control your medical decisions. Women don’t.

      • David

Murder your unborn children all you want. The less liberals the better.

        • Laura B.

Which means you are not against abortion at all, you are just posting to be ignorant.

          • David

Wrong, I think abortion is the most heinous act that can be committed because it’s the murder of an innocent helpless child. But since liberals do all they can to destroy this country, I support them aborting their children because those kids would likely grow up to be hateful freeloading liberals like their parents.

          • Laura B.

You are a few cans short of a six-pack.

          • David

Maybe true, but that’s better than being a liberal that advocates for murder.

          • Laura B.

personhood is at birth. Until then there is no separate entity. In fact, until a cortex forms there is nothing that makes a zygote a viable human.Jesus was a liberal, I believe you don’t even know the definition of the word.

          • David

Ha, Jesus was the farthest thing from today’s liberals. Keep believing that though since everything else you believe is a complete farce.

          • Laura B.

            whatever David. You matter not.

          • David

Not true, if I didn’t exist, who would pay for your welfare and food stamps?

          • Laura B.

My husband and I are probably paying for yours.

  • Jean

Wow. This is a horrible story all around.

I’m pro-choice – pretty vehemently so – but at the same time I look at this woman’s situation and I cringe. She and her family are already on Medicaid. She doesn’t pay attention to the politics of women’s rights in her state. She’s got two children already and the article says sometimes they’re not sure if they’re going to make it from one month to the next. But when she gets pregnant it’s her “miracle baby”?

When they have to do the abortion they can’t afford the procedure, which is already drastically marked down for them because they’re on Medicaid. Another organization provides funds to help with what’s left over. And yet they still have to borrow money to fix their car (guess renting one was right out?) and to pay for everything else to get there.

It’s times like these that I do sort of understand pro-lifer’s point of view. Not about not letting women make their own choices about their own healthcare, but about personal responsibility. How about this? If you’re on Medicaid with two kids already and can’t afford to fix your car…don’t get pregnant again!

    • Amanda Lynn Larson

A lot of people on a lot of levels could take personal responsibility. The amazing thing is that person always seems to be the woman. It’s not the man who helps make the baby. It’s not the people in Texas who actively -cut- family planning and closed clinics (including ones that didn’t provide abortion to punish Planned Parenthood- which means poor women may now have long drives and other struggles to access affordable birth control. It’s not the Texas educators who don’t teach sex ed, contraception or accurate information.

It’s just the woman. Who shouldn’t have sex while married. Who may not be able to get her tubes tied.

Isn’t that amazing? Granted, some people are careless and don’t try. There’s a very small fraction, but have people used abortion as birth control? Yeah. But discussions about responsibility need to include a lot of people. If I’m struggling just to feed my kids? Fancy contraception may not be on the table and it’s not because I’m careless.

    • Amanda Lynn Larson

      And here’s a link! http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-11-12/texas-reproductive-health-cuts-deny-access-to-care-report-says.html

About a quarter of state-funded family-planning clinics in Texas’s Lower Rio Grande Valley closed after funding was cut in 2011, forcing women to forgo breast exams, Pap smears and contraception, according to a report by an advocacy group. —— One of the poorest regions in the State. The women already least likely to have options and ones that may not be able to ‘just drive’ to another clinic.

      • Jean

Believe me, I am all kinds of aggravated by the way certain states are running their “healthcare” these days, placing their bans and forced vaginal ultrasounds and restricting access.

And also, per your previous response, please don’t think that I’m one of those people putting all of the responsibility on the woman. My comment should be taken to mean both of the adults in this woman’s family. It’s just that the article is told from her point of view, and as a woman I would identify more with her.

My problem is that I work for a managed care plan for Ohio Medicaid, and you would be amazed by how many calls I get a day / week from people popping out kid after kid after kid, as if there were no other option than to be a baby machine. I’ve even had people call to ask if they can get a reversal on their tubal ligations or vasectomies, because they want more children. And I’m always thinking, “You’re on Medicaid! Why do you want to bring more kids into the equation, who then have to be paid for and fed by public assistance?!”

As to the contraception, I’m not sure how it might work in Texas but in Ohio all forms of contraception up to and including sterilization are included in coverage with $0 copay. And absolutely, I know accidents happen. But I also don’t see any reason why people can’t think ahead for FIVE MINUTES to try to make a conscious decision to avoid pregnancy.

        • Amanda Lynn Larson

Gotcha. That does make more sense. I’ve definitely seen both extremes as well. I’m all for personal responsibility and don’t mind your emphasis on it. I just want the set up to be there. In Texas, it’s been gutted on a lot of levels and they’re still rebuilding.

Re: kiddos- There’s a lot of grey areas here, but I’d like people to stop and think when they’re looking at large families. Can you afford the kiddo? Who are your supports? As you noted, that’s not what public assistance is intended for and people do need to talk with their significant other and families around those decisions.

I’m all for family planning. All the way!

          • Mark R

Pretty much this. Simple rational thought goes a long way. Take an honest look at your finances. Calculate what an additional child will cost you and go from there. I see people popping out kids left and right that I wouldn’t trust to watch my dog for more than 10 minutes yet nothing seems to deter them, not common sense, logic or any financial limitations.

Kids are a HUGE responsibility and if you’re struggling to get by as it, adding one into a complicated financial situation isn’t likely to ease matters any. People are free to reproduce however they see fit, I just hope they try to do so rationally in consideration of what that future child will need as they develop.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

Yes. I think the kiddo’s welfare needs to come first as part of being and becoming a parent. It is now about that child.

        • ghhshirley

Apparently you are unaware that Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation, that Texas has refused to expand Medicaid, and that family planning clinics have been defunded by Texas Republicans and shut down.

          • Jean

I’m not unaware, as Amanda just advised of the same thing, above. I am aware that this woman and her family are already ON Medicaid, and so the lack of expansion has no effect on them. They’ve already got it. As to the clinics, I already said that I am no fan of the defunding of clinics and making access to birth control more difficult. I’m just saying that if it were me, birth control would be a priority over risking pregnancy (and then having to drive out of state for care). For example, they could have gone to whatever clinic *was* closest, gotten an IUD, and been done for five years.

        • Laura B.

It is not your job to judge the people who ask those questions.it is your job to explain the policy. PERIOD.

          • Mark R

You’re coming off across as a passive-aggressive jerk, PERIOD. Get over yourself lady.

      • ghhshirley

Keep in mind, that the Rio Grande is the size of Connecticut!

        • Amanda Lynn Larson

Oh Good Lord. That makes it even worse. *flail*

    • April D. Korbel

And yet, if the baby hadn’t had this horrible abnormality, the couple would now have three children they can’t afford. That’s what the pro-life folks want.
Taxpayers also pay for those choices. It reinforces my support for easy access birth control. Heck, put it in the water.

    • Laura B.

Lady, put a sock in it. Her husband works, she went to classes part time, they were not rich, but they were the new middle class. They had medicaid, probably because of income and or medical conditions. Where do you get off telling them they don’t rate the help? And RENTING a car?! You are simply pretending that these people were stupid, and I hope to God you never have something like this happen to you!Because people like you are part of a very big problem. And you are NOT one bit better or smarter that this woman was.

      • Jean

Sorry, when did I say they “don’t rate help”? I simply said maybe, just maybe, if you’re already on Medicaid and can’t afford to get your car fixed, maybe think about not bearing more children for awhile. I don’t see how wishing more people were a little more responsible makes me “part of a very big problem”. I never said I was better or smarter. I said I cringed at this story. Take your misplaced anger somewhere else.

        • Laura B.

Lady, medicaid doesn’t mean they are not paying their way. There are hundreds of taxes. He works, she schools part time, they are raising their kids. A car that does well on local things is not necessarily a car that is up to a road trip of hundreds of miles either, lots of people have cars like that. RENTING a car is no option if you don’t have much to spend on the trip. They would have been fine if the fetus had not developed badly, but it did. What exactly would you have had them do? They WANTED this baby! They were ready to raise their little family! And if the child had been born it would have not only been in pain and suffering, it would have been a nice hefty hospital bill, now wouldn’t it.Then you would have had complaint about THAT too!

          • Jean

And again, “Lady”, when did I say they weren’t “paying their way”? It’s got nothing to do with what I’m saying! You have not addressed the very simple point I made that if you are already on Medicaid and money is tight enough that you cannot afford to repair your car, maybe you should not have any more children for awhile.

They would not have been “fine if the fetus had not developed badly”. What they WOULD have been is STILL dependent on Medicaid for yet another member of the family. I don’t care how “ready” someone might be to “raise their little family”. All I’m saying is it’s not a bad idea to try to get into a good position before doing that. The fact that you have such anger at me for simply making that suggestion says a lot, actually.

Also, I don’t know why you’re so fixated on the idea of renting a car. Why is that so ludicrous? You can rent an economy car for $30, $40 a day (with a deposit that you get back). It would have costed them less than a hundred dollars to do that than repair their car so that they could travel out of state with it.

          • ghhshirley

I guess you are completely unaware that Texas has drastically cut funding for family planning clinics where she might have been able to obtain birth control. You also ignore the fact that this baby was WANTED.

          • Jean

I’m hardly unaware that “this baby was WANTED”, considering that in each response to the people picking at me I’m pointing out that maybe you shouldn’t WANT another mouth to feed when you’re poor enough that you can’t fix your car and you’re receiving Medicaid already. I’m sorry that that really seems to offend a lot of people. It’s not my intention to do so. All I (repeatedly) keep trying to point out is that it wouldn’t kill people to think ahead a little bit.

Also, for God’s sake I never said anything about anyone being forced to carry pregnancy to term. Did you even read my original post!? I’m pro-choice, very much so.

          • Laura B.

If this had not been put up as news, you never would have known it.Think ahead? What the heck are YOU?They were fine until this mess started. You have a stinking attitude. Plan ahead indeed.

          • Laura B.

It has EVERYTHING to do with your attitude. You come across as putting them both down for that baby. You judge them! And that is no way to be a human. So frigging WHAT if they still had medical help thru low income medicaid! That is what it is there for!In a society such as ours we help one another, the social programs are there to benefit the citizens of this country!Fire departments benefit all of our citizens, even those who don’t pay property tax, do they not?Are you another one of those people who rate just how much OTHERS deserve? And , the renting a car idea that YOU came up with was not practical, and that is why I mentioned it!

          • Jean

Okay….let’s just never examine any processes or decisions in the hopes of making better ones in the future for fear of coming off as sounding judgmental and getting roasted for it on public forums. *eyeroll* Whatever makes you happy.

          • Laura B.

You are judgeing someone elses life, and that is not your concern. Judge your own.

          • Jean

Last I heard, we also have the right to free speech. I’m free to have my opinion and to express it, just as you are. And in my opinion, in my JUDGEMENT, if you will…people could maybe think ahead a little bit before having more children and expecting other people to help support them. Because essentially that is what is happening here.

I am not down on Medicaid, I am not down on people getting help when they need it. I am a little down on people abusing the system, which is what I feel like happens quite a bit when people perpetuate the problem. Believe me, I get calls all day long from people who are getting Medicaid benefits, they’ve already got four kids, they’re pregnant again and they want to add the new kid to their plan. I realize that you’re very caught up in “not judging” those people, but can you also try to understand that I’m coming from a place where I see RAMPANT abuse and lack of thought put into peoples’ lives. I see a million cases a week where people could make other choices that would help themselves and our economy.

You say, “So frigging WHAT if they still had medical help thru low income medicaid! That is what it is there for!” And I don’t disagree with you. All I am saying, for the upteempth time, is that if you’re not in a good place financially maybe you could put a priority on NOT getting pregnant rather than having another child that’s going to go straight onto Medicaid. The system is there to help people who fall on hard times. Not to continue to SUSTAIN people perpetually. And anyone in a low-income situation, on Medicaid, is not going to get OUT of their low-income situation when they’ve got more and more mouths to feed.

This is not rocket science. Stop being so bloody offended and look at the facts.

          • Laura B.

The FACT is, your judgement has no FACTUAL value. You judge them on your own ideas, not anyone elses. And you have no reason to judge them at all.

          • Jean

Fine. I’ll own that. I judge people who don’t plan ahead and keep popping out children while they’re on Medicaid. Still my right to do so. So continue to argue about me being judgmental all you like. It doesn’t change the facts.

          • Laura B.

three kids is hardly popping out children. You don’t even know what insurance they had when the other two were born. See? There you go again, pretending youknow all about them. Grow up, do your job, and poor-muth people you DO know, not those you don’t.

          • Jean

God, what is your problem? Don’t you have anything better to do than sit here all day and tell me how awful I am?

For the record, I don’t care what insurance they had before. At THIS point they were on Medicaid. THEN they got pregnant.

I’m grown up, thanks. I do my job mopping up everyone else’s issues all day long, putting out the fires of people who don’t bother to think ahead. So why don’t YOU stop assuming I don’t have any idea of what I’m talking about?

          • Laura B.

            Don’t YOU?

          • Jean

lol…aren’t you a mature one? But yes, in fact, I do have better things to do than to try to explain logic and reasoning to the irrational. Have a fun life being a troll on internet comment boards rather than bothering to think about anyone else’s point.

          • Laura B.

Oh logic my foot. it isn’t any of your business. All you need to concern yourself with is doing your job you were hired to do. Beyond that your opinion means nothing, nor does mine. We do not run other peoples lives, nor should we.You know nothing about these people at all.

          • Mark R

This is empty psycho-babble of the highest caliber, she actually makes a pretty good point and all you respond with are petty ad-hominem’s of her “judging people.”

If you’re on Medicard and you’re too broke to fix your car, you really shouldn’t be having another kid. It’s as simple as that. Just because you can, doesn’t make it a good idea. When you have two kids and are already struggling to get by, a third doesn’t magically alleviate those issues. I have no problem at all with people being called out for bad judgment and decision-making.

If you’re in a bad spot financially, there’s nothing wrong with that, lots of people struggle to make ends meet, but having a kid is a HUGE financial responsibility and something it seems that these folks weren’t fully prepared to take on.

          • Laura B.

Mark, when the government regulates one of YOUR organs, then you can talk. Right now it is not any of your business.

Poor people have poor ways. They probably didn’t have a credit card or it reached it’s limit a long time ago so they couldn’t rent a car.The family business was failing or had failed .
This child was wanted until they found out it’s life would be one of suffering and early death. They were also told that the possibility of her getting pregnant were slim to none.
Poor people love babies just like nice middle class people do.
Most people don’t see politics as affecting them much until they run into a wall like this couple did.
These people hit a tragic set of circumstances and needed help and it should have been there and it wasn’t.
The rich have soaked up most of the gravy because that is how Perry and heartless opportunist stay in power.Nothing left for this couple because they can’t afford his price.
Could they have made better choices? Sure they could have but so can you and I.It is easy to judge someone else after the fact but hard to practice what we preach to others.I include myself in that because I’m as human as you are.

    • terafied

      You’re not pro-choice.

      • Jean

Really. And what has led you to make that judgement about me, after I flat-out said that I am?

A person can be pro-choice and ALSO think it might be nice if people planned ahead a little more. Or at least, I used to think that reasonable people could think that. But apparently I’m the only one.

  • Adam Bray

People who are against abortion always seem to talk in the abstract, but this story shows the real world impact that these bans and limitations put on women to make their own choices. Pro-Life people always seem to forget these bans affect real people and make life unbearable for women who make these choices.

  • joe michael villa

The only thing the Texas GOP has done is make it unsafe for poor women in Texas to get abortions.
Since the beginning of time women have always found a way.

The rich will always have access to safe abortions.

  • LoudGuitr

When large corporations begin relocating their businesses out of these oppressive, anti-choice states, we will see a reversal. Until then, praise Jeezus!

  • usakindatheart

The very few reasonable comments here about the one in a million scenario of a back woods abortion botch. DOES NOT COMPARE to the BILLIONS across the world of aborTion clinics making BILLIONS $$ of money killing the unprotected unborn… NOW that is the truth.. even if you do not agree that an unborn child has the right to live.. THE MONEY MADE from drugs and procedures to KILL these children is MONSTROUS

    • Amanda Lynn Larson

So you agree that birth control should be free and support affordable daycare? Clearly a tiny price to pay for the lives of children. :)

      • Sir Loins

Stop elevating children beyond what they are: humans. They are not a separate magical species damn it! They are humans and every single one of them grows up to be an adult version of itself. Do you not understand that? Do you honestly love dirty homeless dudes who are strung out? You sure-as-sht better, because they were once little babies and children.

        • Amanda Lynn Larson

If you scroll up, you’ll notice my post was in reply to usakindheart. If you read her/his post, you’ll see context. Context is helpful if you want to understand a post instead of rant. The context of the original freaking post mentioned children, so I mentioned children. Funny how that works.

Here’s the thing. You jumped into a conversation. You made stupid assumptions. I don’t actually owe you anything in response to said assumptions, but, why not, I’ll bite.

My job before the one I have now -was- with addicts/alcoholics, some of which had been strung out junkies. I now work for a community agency. We work with women that are sometimes homeless and otherwise struggling. Housing is limited to women for safety reasons, but yes, I care for and try to help grown ups.

          • Sir Loins

I’ve read all your posts; you speak of children just like every person who is high on baby, i.e. “they are the future,” etc. What do you want a medal? Thump a bible and all of a sudden you get entitled to self-righteousness and everybody who doesn’t thump said bible is beneath you? Besides, this is the internet. I could claim to be anything. With all due respect, I don’t believe you. I don’t believe you’d be okay with Gov subsidies to ensure all elderly folks live the rest of their days in total comfort and care.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

The only people that are beneath me are self-righteous idiots that lecture people on the internet without a clue.

            Have fun trolling.

          • Sir Loins

Okay. I’ll take that as: I’m right.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

Nah. It was ‘I’m tired of rude people on the internet, particularly when you’re making unfounded assumptions about me.’

I live in Oregon, rural Oregon. The population is 95% white, so we have white rural drug culture (meth, heroin, pills). The issues here are ineffective mental health treatment/lack of access, little housing for single people, lack of homeless support, and lack of access to drug treatment (see poverty). OHP pays for beds at some treatments (sliding scale), but if you lack that? You’re on the 6 month+ for a treatment center wait list. Not all treatment centers even take OHP- there’s wait lists to get in. Pregnant mom’s are prioritized, so single men and others are on the bottom of the lists.

If you’re a violent offender or have had violent offenses, some centers wont’ take you and your option is treatment in jail or after jail treatment. I didn’t work with that population, as we had women and children present.

My community has two shelters and inadequate homeless support, though we have two organizations stepping up- one has a drop in center and one has a place where people can stop, shower and wash their clothes. Both are working on homeless outreach.

I work with survivors of domestic and/or sexual assault, which sometimes, but not always includes the homeless- a lot of women do end up homeless after leaving their abusers.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

Question: What are the problems facing the homeless in your community? Addicts?

          • Sir Loins

I live in Austin so, being a homeless advocate, you should know.

          • Amanda Lynn Larson

I don’t know anything about Austin. What are the issues facing homeless people in Austin?

    • Expatmom

Anyone without an empty brain pan, knows that NO ONE is performing abortions to get rich. Your posting is beyond stupid.

    • Nico

We are extremely overpopulated. We breed at a rate that accomodates a good deal of natural death that does not occur with modern medicine. We have evolved to breed at a rate that is no longer necessary, these unborn children do not automatically have the right to live when we are artificially inflating our populaiton to an unsustainable level. When it was highly likely that either the mother or the child would die in childbirth, yea, preserve life; when it was likely that if you had 5 children 2 would live to adulthood, yea, preserve life; but that’s not the world we live in anymore, more people need to decide to not have children. We’d all prefer they took steps to not get pregnant in the first place, but laws against abortion are not going to accomplish that.

    • terafied

If abortion is such a profitable procedure, why are they still $300?

      • kissyface

they are $450 without anesthetic $550 with anesthesia in Ohio

  • chuck howard

This is what happens when you let religious fanatics get involved with health care decisions that should be left up to a patient and her doctors. Could Texas be any more horrible?

  • RJ

Then why is Wendy Davis trailing Greg Abbott…This is just more of the same non-sense you see n the national scale. Federal workers cry and complain about pay increases yet they continue to vote in republicans. Women crying and complaining about Abortion rights’ issues yet Abbott is still leading Davis. At some point you federal workers, government employee, Military active duty member and veterans, along with WOMEN in TEXAS, you have to do what is the best for you. Study these people you are electing, they have taken your vote for granted, you need to study these people and make the change the change that best suits you…

Stop SNOT BUBBLING ALL OVER THE PLACE and do something for yourself. It might hurt or cause you some pain but in the long run you have to show you stand for something…

    • 1bimbo

‘SNOT BUBBLING’? … ‘pain’?… that doesn’t sound very good

      • RJ

You like that. I will see if I have some more Military Jargon we used during my 20 years of service just for you…

    • flora68

Nobody’s bubbling. She’s gonna clean his plow.

      • DavidD

I’d love to see that happen.I’ve joined battleshiptexas and started becoming active in my county organization.I have become a volunteer voter registor.
The simple truth is that if we don’t get out the vote then she will lose and I don’t see that happening now during this mid term election.

    • DavidD

People are being exploited by the GOP that panders to the worst in all of us and was designed by sociopaths to inflame emotion not encourage critical thinking.
They have been doing that here for forty years with the help of chamber of commerce types and preachers who give their congregations their marching orders every Sunday.
Fussing at folks on an individual basis is not going to do any good and if progresives are going to do anything it is going to take funded organized collective action over a long period of time.
I share your frustration but shouting on the side lines by yourself is not going to drown out the huge sound machine that the GOP has built up .
My mother always told me that if you want something you have to work for it.Life has told me that there is no substitute for substained collective action .
Until we realize this and put it into action we are just butting our heads against a solid brick wall.

  • heartbot

I wish I could send this woman a care package. I know what it’s like to receive terrible news at your 20-week scan and to be put on a stressful timeline to receive an abortion. She’s not alone, and she deserves support and sympathy in this challenging time. My heart and prayers go out to her.

  • apstyle

What a brave woman to tell her story and hopefully help other women who face such a life-altering decision. No one should have to be shamed, demeaned, or put through what she went through simply because a handful of politicians want to score political points. Shame on Gov. Rick Perry and the conservative Texas legislators.

    • Sportgear

Ronald Reagan said it best “Its always those who are already born who fight for abortion rights”

  • Tanya Nguyễn

The single biggest danger of 20 week bans, is that almost all 20 week abortions are performed on otherwise wanted pregnancies. Things go wrong. badly wrong, with mother, with child, with life.

We do not need to be legislating such rare events in the first place. we need to be compassionate.

no pregnant woman waits around for 5 months, out of bordeom, or cause they forgot they were pregnant. so we need to be more responsive to why they are getting later and late term abortions, and far far far more supportive.

we need to stop these laws.

    • Sportgear

Do you know how a partial birth abortion is performed? Its a sadistic murder with a pair of scissors through the back of the skull of the baby. Did you know that?

      • terafied

Do you know that there is no such thing as “partial-birth abortions?”

        • 1bimbo

          somebody better tell wikipedia then
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partial_birth_abortion

          • Rachal Pro Choice

This link redirects you to a procedure called Intact Dilation and Extraction and then explains how the term Partial Birth Aboriton is a bullshit, media and polictial stunt term.

The term “partial-birth abortion” is primarily used in political discourse—chiefly regarding the legality of abortion in the United States.[6] The term is NOT recognized as a medical term by the American Medical Association[7] nor the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.[8] This term was first suggested in 1995 by Congressman Charles T. Canady, while developing the original proposed Partial-Birth Abortion Ban.[9][10] According to Keri Folmar, the lawyer responsible for the bill’s language, the term was developed in early 1995 in a meeting among herself, Charles T. Canady, and National Right to Life Committee lobbyist Douglas Johnson.[11] Canady could NOT find this particular abortion practice named in any medical textbook, and therefore he and his aides named it.[12] “Partial-birth abortion” was first used in the media on 4 June 1995 in a Washington Times article covering the bill.

          • 1bimbo

in short, it depends on what your definition of ‘is’ is

  • http://twitter.com/devans00 devans00

There’s so much about this article that’s infuriating. The worst are the busy body losers who hang out at clinics harassing anyone who goes in. How dare they say anything to the woman or her husband? They don’t know shit.

My biggest pile of hate goes to the politicians who twisted a legal, personal medical decision into a cruel and dangerous tool to control women’s destinies and appease small minded religious nuts.

    It’s so wrong.

  • flora68

I’m so sorry she had to go through all that. Embryophiles cause WAY more than their share of trouble and suffering in the world.

I find it bizarre how, on the one hand, the Forced Birthers CAN easily discern the difference between a pecan and a pecan tree, or an acorn and an oak tree…no problem! They’re not even remotely the same and don’t merit the same (if ANY) protection or concern.

But on the other hand. for some reason these folks claim NOT to see the glaringly obvious difference between a blastocyst and a BABY. This insistence upon pretending that the acorn really IS an oak tree is almost demented. A fetus fetish. It’ll be a great day when these people FINALLY snap out of it, stop wringing their hands about recently fertilized ova and rededicate themselves to protecting and caring about ACTUAL babies and ACTUAL children and ACTUAL teenagers. If they really care about LIFE, there’s their real chance to show it.

  • Bob Martin

These people have no compassion, they only care about their dogma. If their God created them in His image then He is a selfish sadistic dick.

  • erikkiehle

The politicians in states like Texas love to yell and scream about the unfunded mandates handed out by Washington D.C. Yet, the ignorant hypocrites go and force an unfunded mandate on the people of their state when they pass laws like this. Soon the only option will be to carry the fetus to term. Either it’ll pass on in the womb or be born alive (for however long such deformities allow). At either of those points the medical care for the mother will be hugely expensive, far more than an abortion costs. With Texas being the state with the most uninsured people (something like 25%), the costs of these medical procedures will result in more misery as families who’ve suffered from a terrible loss and trauma may be forced into bankruptcy by un-payable bills. So much for “compassionate Con-servatives”. They talk a good talk about family values but if they succeed in outlawing abortion and forced defective humans into the world it would be epic irony for the families/mothers to turn the defective children over to the state for care. Any such child will cost the state terribly for proper medical treatment. Then all those “fiscal conservatives” will scream about how broke the state is. America is doomed. Go see the movie Idiocracy for an all-too-likely vision of the future of this nation.

  • Sportgear

Its important to understand the history of abortion clinics and their ultimate purpose. I suggest all of you do some reading about Margaret Sanger and her motive for starting Planned Parenthood. Her motive and her purpose has been accomplished on a large scale. Black community abortions far exceed all white abortion numbers in the State of New York. Should we not fall into the whims of the elites and dispose of our children when we should be fighting for an economy that we can raise our children in?

    • http://plumstchili.blogspot.com/ Plum Dumpling

So if a black woman is having a white baby, is it okay to get an abortion?

    • terafied

So you think black women are too stupid to make their own reproductive choices?

      • myintx

Unless their life is truly endangered from the pregnancy, anyone who makes the choice to kill their unborn child has made a bad choice.

  • Mrs. Fisher

Abortion is protected by law. Law is created under the government to protect the interests of all citizens…not just the Christian citizens. An atheist has the right to believe only in science and not some ” higher power or God ” telling them what their moral compass should be. Yet you cannot argue that abortion is immoral unless you use God as a reason. A person who does not believe in God may only view the fetus as a clump of cells. Are they wrong? Why should their right to believe and do what they want with their body be overtaken by the person that believes in God? We have a right to believe what ever we want in this country. The government needs to stop forcing Christian law on the masses because THEY think it’s the right thing to do. In order to argue abortion in this country you can only use science as your source of information. The rest should be left up to each family and their own PERSONAL religious beliefs.

    • myintx

Just because something is legal, doesn’t mean it is right. “Separate but Equal” was legal for a long time. Never made it right.
And, it doesn’t take religion to know that killing an unborn child is wrong. Take a look at an ultrasound of an unborn child at 18 or 20 weeks. It’s not a ‘clump of cells’. It’s a human being. Killing a born human being is wrong. Killing that SAME human being before it is born is wrong too. There are secular pro-life groups out there (www.Secularprolife.Org).
If someone’s ‘PERSONAL religious beliefs’ tell them that killing their newborn is OK, are you going to support them? Pat them on the back for making a ‘choice’? Killing an innocent child – born or unborn – is wrong.

  • myintx

These clinic closings are great news for the unborn children of Texas. Perhaps while packing to go to a far away clinic a woman will have time to think about her choice. Or a friend will tell her that she is not just getting rid of a clump of cells, she is contemplating killing a human being – an unborn child. And perhaps this friend will tell the woman there are much better choices available.

  • Breezy

A woman’s health should be a woman’s right to protect it. Some may argue that a fetus is a baby, which I entirely disagree with. When a fetus is out the womb breathing, then it has become alive in the world-then it’s a baby, this is my personal opinion. However, abortions are very important to a women’s health in critical conditions such as the one in the article. The stereotype of young girls “only” having abortions is completely misleading and shouldn’t mask the real problems many women go through. Instead of shutting down these clinics, the state should re-open more clinics and ensure safe medical procedures that do no further harm to the individuals mental or physical health.

    • myintx

An unborn child is a human being. It should not be killed for senseless or selfish reasons.
Abortion is never safe for the unborn child – it’s always deadly.

      • Breezy

Its unborn-not alive, not a human being yet. Abortion is always a horrible thing to go through for women but fetuses are not babies they’re not alive to feel or remember anything, its like the embryo you scramble on a skillet to make an egg, you think that’s a baby too? And women who do get abortions don’t wait until 8 months when the fetus is almost fully grown. They have doctors that know how the fetus will turn out and if it will grow with severe mental or health problems. Then you have rape victims that end up getting pregnant, some are even young girls. How can you call these problems selfish reasons? These are real issues that hurt a lot of people, not just women, but think of their families too. It’s very sad and hard to get over for everyone.

        • myintx

An unborn child is a human being. It is alive. It has to be alive to grow and develop. And, it’s more than just alive (cause I know you’ll come back with the tumor comparison). It’s a self-directing organism. One that, if not killed or miscarried, will have a heartbeat after about 5 weeks and all its limbs and major organs in place by 12 weeks.
Most of the eggs that you eat are not fertilized… if you cracked open a fertilized chicken egg a few weeks after it was fertilized you probably wouldn’t be able to make scrambled eggs out of it.
Less than 1% of abortions are due to rape and incest. Most are for reasons like “cannot afford a child” or “not the right time for a child”. Great reasons to have avoided getting pregnant in the first place (over 40% of women who have abortions admit to not using any contraception the month they became pregnant!). Those are great reasons to ask for help or see what benefits are available or visit an adoption agency. Those are horrible reasons to kill.

          • Breezy

An unborn child is not alive. It doesn’t have any presence in the world but in the womb of a woman. And the womb of a woman is something laws or opposing beliefs cannot control, its the CHOICE of the WOMAN. What she wants to do for her health to survive in some circumstances is entirely up to her. There should not be any debate about that. And contraception is very important in reducing unwanted pregnancies but that doesn’t mean we should be criticized for not taking it. A woman cannot have a baby on her own, it take a mans sperm too. And its both individuals who should be responsible not just women.

          • myintx

An unborn child is alive (heck, even the sperm and the egg are alive). In addition, an unborn child is an individual organism with it’s own DNA. At 5 weeks it has ITS OWN heartbeat.
After viability, laws say a woman cannot kill her unborn child (in most states, with exceptions), so it’s not always the choice of the woman. Unless the life of the woman is truly endangered from the pregnancy, no woman should have the ‘choice’ to kill an unborn child. It was a ‘choice’ given by a bad Supreme Court decision.
I didn’t say it was always the woman’s responsibility, but the polls only interview the woman as it’s the woman who is killing her unborn child (and, if she’s pressured into killing she should go to the police).

          • joshuaism
          • myintx

Anyone (including people with agendas) can update Wikipedia. A teratoma is alike a tumor, it is NOT a human organism like human beings are. Unborn children are human beings.

  • Mary4freedom

I don’t understand why the Supreme Court thought they had the right to make a law that certain people were allowed to kill other people. Life is a God given right. They had no right to trump God’s law.

    • cathy Tuttle

so the brain dead child?? the women that basically has to carry and give birth to a dead child?? what of that?? there is gods give right??

    • Mary4freedom

Throughout our history, doctors have always aborted a dead child to save the mother. There didn’t need to be a new law for that. Hippocratic Oath states, ‘Do no harm’.

      • Patrick Henry

FALSE. Throughout most of history, doctors were unable to confirm with certainty that a child was dead.
You made that up to try to make abortion less evil.
From what history I have read on abortion, most women who committed it used various “home” remedies.

        • Mary4freedom

Then maybe I should have , throughout out our history, when a doctor found that a mother was carrying a dead child that put her life at risk, he would abort the dead child. No, I’m not making it up. I made it up to sound less evil? Evil is evil.

  • tigalily

I always say. I’d rather have the blood of a fetus on my hands than a woman’s. Agreed a life is ending, but which one? A life that has only been 6 weeks and has no feeling? Or a life that has a solid 15-20+ years on this planet…has relationships, commitments etc. It really comes down to a utilitarian perspective.

its not just Texas. Ohio and several other states have this law. also women are dying due to Catholic hospitals refusing to do life saving D&C’s. i was having a miscarriage and needed a D&C and was taken to the closest hospital that refused to do a D&C because it is the same procedure as an abortion so i had to drive myself 50 miles while in labor to get to a hospital that would do a D&C

My Ex-Husband dumped me two weeks after because i accused him of seeing someone else and insulting him. I wanted him back in my life but he refused to have any contact with me, i was so confused and i didn’t know what to do, so i had to go to the internet for help and i saw a testimony of how a spell caster helped people to get their ex back so i contacted the spell caster and explained my problem to him and he did a love spell for me and assured me that after 3days, my ex will return to me and to my greatest surprise the third day my ex came knocking at my door begging for forgiveness. I am so happy that my love is back again and not only that, we are about to get married. Once again thank you Esango Priest, You are truly a great man. He can be of great help and I will not stop testifying about him on the internet because he is a wonderful man, you can reach him via email:[email protected]
