IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) — When the Cowboys drafted defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, personnel boss Will McClay declared him a “quarterback hunter.” The Cowboys hope they’ll get just that when Lawrence returns to action.

The Dallas defense sits near the bottom of the league with just six sacks on the season. By comparison, Buffalo leads the NFL with 24. Nine players have at least six sacks in 2014.

Jerry Jones says the team has generated the necessary pressure up the middle, but they’re getting little off the edge.

“We’ve got some guys that are quick enough and good enough players to get us sacks on the inside,” said Jones with Shan & RJ on 105.3 The Fan. “What we’re not having is them forced into the inside.”

Lawrence — who led the Mountain West with 10.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss in his senior season — is eligible to officially return to practice this week after being placed on short term IR this offseason.

Stephen Jones told the G-Bag Nation on Monday that Lawrence will be “ready to go” against Arizona on Nov. 2 — the first game he’s eligible to return.

Jerry thinks he’s used the time off wisely to physically prepare.

“Lawrence had everybody frothing at the mouth out there last week,” said Jones. “He’s really improved his body this time off. He’s used it to really have a lot of strength work. It’s something he didn’t do as much as he’s doing now in college. He’s had quite a physical improvement.”

Another lineman with unique qualities could also be available soon.

Josh Brent, who is participating in team activities while serving his suspension, will accompany the team to London in Week 10. He is then eligible to return to game action on Nov. 23 in New York.

“He adds something we don’t have in there too,” said Jones. “He’s obviously strong, but Josh has got about 20 pounds worth of size that the others don’t. There are times that we really need that in the middle.”
