Some Collin County Parents Stunned By School Redistricting Plans
COLLIN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - There are few issues in Frisco that will get people more upset than redrawn school boundaries. A new proposal, dropped in front of parents Monday evening, is sending shock-waves through some homes.
As is sometimes he case when school boundaries are redrawn, CBS 11 News met the Willis family. Father Greg Willis says he has two sons that could possibly be headed to two different high schools next year.
“We have to decide which high school games to go watch. We can’t go to both sons’ games,” he said frustrated. “We have to decide which band competition to watch. It’s not a decision we want to make.” Both John Willis and his younger brother Jacob are accomplished in their marching bands.
As it stands, John attends Wakeland High School. But under the new rezoning plane, Jacob could be sent to the new Reedy High School next year.
John is just a sophomore at Wakeland, but he understands some of the complexities that could arise with the rezoning. “We have very early morning rehearsals. We go to football games. We have competitions, so my parents would be placed in the dilemma [of] which one do you go to?”
It was on Monday night that the school board discussed the plan in front of dozens of concerned parents and students.
Frisco Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Lyon promised that whatever proposal is adopted will cause the least amount of disruption to the least number of students.
Frisco ISD is the states fastest growing school district and is also in the middle of an ambitious plan to build four new high schools, in four years. But Lyon says to accomplish the feat some families, like the Willis’, may have to make sacrifices.
Reflecting on the proposal Greg Willis said, “The way it’s carved out it’s going to make a lot of people very upset.”
