A murder suspect who had taken a bus to flee authorities was arrested Tuesday afternoon without incident in San Marcos, police said Wednesday.

Police identified the suspect as 27-year-old Francisco Javier Luis Avelar.

Avelar is accused of killing Jose Arista, 26, of Haltom City early Tuesday in the backyard of a Fort Worth home.

During the investigation and through witness interviews in Fort Worth and Haltom City, detectives got the suspect’s name and learned that he had fled Fort Worth Tuesday by taking a bus destined for Laredo. Detectives also learned that the bus was scheduled to stop in San Marcos.

San Marcos detectives and tactical team members took the suspect into custody Tuesday afternoon when the bus arrived. Fort Worth fugitive officers traveled to San Marcos and took Avelar into custody. He was returned to Fort Worth Tuesday afternoon where he was interviewed by detectives.

At 3:46 a.m. Tuesday, patrol officers dispatched to the 3600 block of Panola Avenue in east Fort Worth found Arista in a backyard driveway with wounds on his upper body and neck.

Homicide detectives found that the victim and suspect had been in a fight in the backyard. The suspect and several witnesses fled.
