Our British Texan Discovers the Dallas Stars and Falls Madly in Love with Weird-Ass Hockey

This man is exactly how I feel about the Dallas Stars.
Two years ago, when I arrived in the States from the UK, I had a very vague idea of what ice hockey was. I was, though, sure that it was one of the most far-fetched sports out there. While most sports are played on the sort of easily accessible field we can all find and involve a ball, hockey is played on a smooth sheet of ice, with sticks, a goaltender dressed up to look like Aaron Rodgers in that awful State Farm commercial and a comically tiny goal that itself can slide around the ice.

Cowboy Joseph Randle Gets an Underwear Endorsement Deal for Stealing Underwear

Steal some underwear, get some free underwear. Circle of life.
In a move that's a bit like Fiskars hiring Michael Irvin as a spokesman , MeUndies, a Los Angeles-based underwear company, is bringing on Cowboys backup running back Joseph Randle to sell $20 pairs of boxer briefs.

Randle, who is making $495,000 this season, was arrested last Monday for absconding with $39.50 worth of Polo underwear and an $84 tester bottle of Gucci Guilty Black cologne from a Frisco Dillard's. Randle told police he took the items because he didn't want to take the time to pay, which is somehow both the dumbest and most sensible explanation for stealing something.

The Cowboys' Tight Ends Are Quietly Killing It

The Cowboys looked really good again. I'm questioning a lot of things.
As the Cowboys have marched to their best seven game start since 2007, the accolades have been plentiful and plentifully spread around. DeMarco Murray has, deservedly, been lauded as the second coming of Tony Dorsett with each successive 100-yard performance. The defense is "improved" and "flying to the ball." Tony Romo is avoiding mistakes and converting third downs at a remarkable clip. The offensive line is the best in the league. You could hear all these things just watching the highlight shows between the end of Cowboys-Giants and the start of Broncos-49ers Sunday night.

One unit that hasn't received the plaudits, but is essential to what the Cowboys are doing on offense this year, is the team's tight ends. Jason Witten, Gavin Escobar and James Hanna were outstanding again Sunday and will continue to key the team as it moves toward the second half of the season.

New Rangers Manager Jeff Banister: Who Is This Guy?

Jeff Banister's new office.
While the Rangers' hiring of Pittsburgh Pirates bench coach Jeff Banister to take over Ron Washington's vacated managerial post didn't come completely out of nowhere, it's certainly a surprise. For those outside the organization, the first sign that Banister was a serious candidate for the gig came when he, along with Tim Bogar and Kevin Cash, was named as one of the three finalists for the job. Even then, the easiest person to see taking the job was Bogar. He'd just finished leading the previously moribund 2014 Rangers to a 14-8 record in his stretch as interim manager and had the tactical acumen the team sorely lacked under Washington.

Wednesday though, the tide seemed to turn in Banister's direction. With members of the national media like Ken Rosenthal reporting that the Rangers were conducting deep due diligence on Banister, it began to look like the job might be his.

Now, on Thursday, it is.

Jerry Jones Sex Assault Suit Is Over, But It Isn't Exactly Clear Why

Jerry Jones is no longer headed to trial over accusations that he sexually assaulted a woman in 2009. The case, brought by former stripper Jana Weckerly, also claimed that Jones and his longtime lawyer, Levi McCathern, conspired to pay her off until the statute of limitations expired.

A hearing was scheduled for Thursday afternoon to determine whether or not Weckerley's claims could move forward despite the fact that more than five years had passed since the incident with Jones. She argued that her claim should still be heard because of Jones frequent travel outside Texas, and that the payments she claimed to have received from Jones, by way of McCathern, fell within the statute.

Thursday morning, after a court-mandated mediation session Wednesday, the case was dismissed.

The Rangers Should Not Trade Elvis Andrus

Don't get rid of this guy.
With the Orioles re-signing shortstop JJ Hardy, what was already thin free agent market at the position became threadbare. Beyond Hanley Ramirez, Asdrubal Cabrera and Stephen Drew the cupboard is largely empty, leaving big-market clubs like the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers and Tigers -- all of which will look to sign a shortstop this off-season -- in a lurch.

Among many in the Rangers community, the developing market is viewed as the perfect situation to shop the team's incumbent shortstop Elvis Andrus. Andrus is owed $118 million over the next eight seasons, and is coming off his worst season as a professional. It might be time, the thinking goes, to give Luis Sardinas a shot to hang on until Jurickson Profar is fit to play regularly.

The match.
Dude Perfect, the guys behind the 500-foot basketball shot from the top of Reunion Tower, have a new video out featuring Dallas Stars stalwarts Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. It's undeniably cool.

The top-line duo bowl a strike with a hockey puck from near center ice, take out targets around the infield at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco and destroy a couple of piñatas unfortunate enough to be hanging from a crossbar.

The Cowboys Are No Longer the Cowboys

This was an honest to God, no equivocations, good win. Let's enjoy it.
It happened again. The Cowboys dominated the first two-thirds of a game, just as they did against Tennessee and Houston, and found themselves in a fistfight to the finish. This time it was against the Seahawks in Seattle, a presumably impossible task, but the result was the same. The Cowboys won their fifth straight, keeping pace with the Chargers for the best record in the NFL and validating their hot start with a win over the preseason consensus best team in the league.

The Cowboys beat up the Seahawks for the better part of two-and-a-half quarters, thanks largely to an improved pass rush and improved running-back depth, with Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar perhaps providing an answer to the perpetual question, But what happens when Murray goes down?. Then they repelled the comeback with an unlikely, amazing catch from Terrance Williams, a big block from backup offensive lineman Jermey Parnell and more strong running from DeMarco Murray.

West High Football Has Long Been Terrible, but It's Coming Back Just Like the Town

It's a cliche, sure, but in the case of West, Texas' high school football team, it appears to be true.

"The old saying is, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger," says David Woodard, West High School's head football coach. "Our kids have gotten mentally stronger and physically stronger and it's made it to the point where everything we've been through, our kids believe now that they can just win."
