Efrain Gutierrez at the 2014 Cine Las Americas Film Festival

Melissa del Bosque joined The Texas Observer staff in 2008. She specializes in reporting on immigration and the U.S.-Mexico border. Her work has been published in national and international publications including TIME magazine and the Mexico City-based Nexos magazine. Melissa is a 2014-15 Lannan Fellow at The Investigative Fund.

In the seventies, filmmaker Efrain Gutierrez recorded the pain, the struggle and the injustice of life in his west San Antonio barrio on a 16mm camera. Against all odds, he became a sensation for making gritty feature-length films that defied Hollywood stereotypes and broke the Mexican monopoly over Spanish language theaters in the U.S. Read more about his work in “With a Camera in His Hand.” Melissa del Bosque interviews Gutierrez at the Cine Las Americas film festival in Austin where his recently restored films are screening through Sunday.
