Little Help for Those Who Can't Make the Rent
For as many as 40,000 low-income Austin households being squeezed by high rents in a booming city, Wednesday offers the barest glimmer of hope.
For eight days, the city will accept applications for its housing voucher program, something it has not done in eight years. From the 20,000 to 40,000 expected applications, 2,500 will be randomly selected to go on a waiting list.
Making that list means a wait of up to five years to reach the head of the line and receive a Section 8 rent voucher.

Having contracted to renovate homes in SE Austin, I see the good, bad, and ugly.
With poverty, crime stalks the residents....
Drugs and distribution exist...
Along with good folks with big hearts.
I see single mothers with children and undocumented boyfriends and other unlisted males.
The rules need updating.
There must be a neighborhood culture with respectful law enforcement participation.
Expansion of the program does aid in providing decent housing.
PS: throw in a free $149. Mower too.....

Maybe if they didn't spend all their money on beer, cigs, and lotto they could pay their rent. The one in the pic seems to be eating well.

Gunn...go read something on nutrition before you talk about how she looks...A bad (cheap) diet has more to do with it than overeating.....Plus I'd like to see you live with kids on a minimum wage....
